Jeff Asked About Taxi Dangers in Guatemala?
John the man from USA in the back seat of the taxi asked: Have you ever been robbed by taxis that isolated me? No? But at maybe 10-15 land border crossing the police have taken me to their office. And, just normal police have taken me to their offices about 5 times. I have never paid them a bribe, I never got nervous, and tried to buy my way out. Yet, at a few border crossing the police or customs have asked for 5 dollars, and I have given, because I was not sure if this was normal or not. I do not research border crossing costs, and do not think about this stuff much. TMI too much information for my brain, I accept that what happens at the border crossing happens, I cannot change it, I must accept it, and getting angry is not going to change a country. Police are 10 times more dangerous in any country than the Taxi drivers, but one must stop thinking all people are good, and use our instincts, I pass instant judgement on all taxi drivers, I look at them until I think he or she looks like a nice person, and have no problem saying in my brain, that taxi driver is an "A Hole." There is some dangerous belief that we must give all people the benefit of the doubt, when we look at anybody and feel negative feeling, own them, do not disown them, that is over-riding our brains safety system, really not a good idea.
I have noticed that in one area in Guatemala I have to be especially careful of any chicken bus, combi, etc. That is near the Mexican border at Talisman (a few kilometers from Tapachula). The issue is rather severe overcharging. Always get information about trip costs from multiple persons. A fair number of people may try to overcharge.
