If we want to be a good, green, ecological tourist, then we should not travel, every new hotel destroys, makes a bigger carbon footrprint.3 years ago, I talked to a team of Guatemalan that are working on the problem. Do not expect information to spread around like a small town newspaper in the USA. What spread around is superstition, hearsay, and gossip, and that is rampant on Lake Atitlan.

Generally any type of problem is the fodder of ONG / NGO and charities. This is a haven for charities, they always are where it is nice to live, they need to make money... LOL - I was there when it was supposed to be in full bloom, and it was not even close to what the websites state. There are only two places where I have see it really pretty deep, the San Pedro bay, and the Santiago Bay, because the winds blow it over

The poor countries are up to their ears in people, so expect them to go down for the next 50 years. 200 countries on the planet the warlords wins, and 50 countries democracy has wins, so fun stuff, Guatemala is like a more controlled Chaos, but one can slice a nice 150 dollar per month room there with ease, with high speed Internet, and when the neighborhood goes to hell, we can move on. There is zero reason in my opinion to hard code, commit to any expat location, they are always a maybe they are nice to there locations, but if you are savvy, you can slice a good piece of pie out of lake atitlan, while others just hear the racket.
