Lots of good practice advice as usual. Some places are more or less dangerous than others. In some areas there my be a lot of petty theft but not so much violent crime. As you say, it is safer to be near other expats in an area where there is more security than out in the boonies. Awareness, awareness, awareness applies everywhere. I found being in a place long enough to make some good local friends who could give me the inside scoop on the things to look out for invaluable. In Mexico the Yucatan is less dangerous overall because they do not want to have bad press that would slow money coming in the country so they have more security.
