Another Fun Travel Quiz, Why Do I Decline to Put Package in Back of Taxi?

DebV

You're holding your heavy package on your lap rather than putting it in the backseat because:
1. You'd have to pay for 2 seats instead of one.
2. You don't want to accidentally leave it in the taxi when he drops you off, especially since you're already holding your heavy backpack.
2. He'll probably be picking up more people along the way, so you'll end up holding it anyway.

Deb has made this into a multiple answer quiz. One of her three suggestions is mostly correct, which one? The others are also possible. Why? We benefit by thinking through all possible reasons so when we are in a Taxi, we have already thought about this.

Julienne

My husband came up with two possibilities, both involving theft:
1. Warm weather, windows are open, and when the taxi stops, such as at a red light, someone could reach into the open back window and grab whatever is in the back seat and run.
2. When you reach your destination and get out of the taxi, before you can open the back door and retrieve your belongings the driver could take off.

Number 2 for Deb V and for Julienne is correct. For private taxis, I avoid putting luggage, or packages separate from where I am sitting. Arriving at an airport, drivers want to load the back with my bags. Alone, this is a problem, I can jump out, pay, and forget the box, or bag. Or worst, they just drive way to steal the luggage. So either I forget, or the steal. One time in South Korea, i got out, and forgot the bag. I stood at the location for about 20 minutes, and the driver was honest, drove back, and gave me the bag. My friend Chris arrived in Lake Atitlan, put his computer in the back, and the tuk tuk drove off, and he lost the computer. Hand luggage, day bags, computer bags need to always stay with the person. Large bags are the problem, we have no choice sometimes. Yet, out of sight, out of mind. Keeping your hand sitting on top of luggage is the solution, and removing from a taxi before you pay, do not pay first, pay after all the luggage is safe. Whether we forget, or stolen, both are the same problem, Helpful Taxi drivers know how to help themselves to our bags. Thanks,

DebV

Since you were posing this question in Togo I was trying to think of answers not having to do with stealing or thievery since you've stated that in Africa, the people don't steal like in Latin American countries. Getting distracted and forgetting about my bags could be a problem for me. As a worldwide travel modus operandi principle, as much as you're able when taking transportation, keep your bags and possessions in hand or somehow attached to oneself and/or in sight and within reach at all times.

You are correct, there is almost no theft in Togo. Security protocols for me are the same in every country, yet, I do believe forgetting a bag is more common than theft. Yet, a German taxi driver would 98 percent of the time remind you to take your bag, and a Togo person only 10 percent. Decision triggers are missing in Togo, they are extremely unaware of other peoples needs, wants, or actions, truly easy to sneak up on them.
