GadgetMark, that is a good guideline, "when a situation becomes about being right, the conversation is lost everyone loses." I try to think to myself when talking, "Do I want to change the other person?" And, better yet, "Do I believe I can change the other person?" The setting up some boundaries on when to stop talking, pulling away because as you say, it has become about somebody wanting to be right.
There is always a new drinking story to tell, where someone did something stupid. And many people living abroad, not traveling abroad drink a lot. But, generally the long-term traveler do not, they do not want to waste the money.
I do not care if my friends drink, or don't drink, I just don't tolerate highly dysfunctional behaviors. It is never the drinking that cause the problem, it is their thinking.
