When I travel to Latin America, I bring gifts. I scour the clearance racks at Kohl's, Target, etc. I usually make up goodie bags with inexpensive soaps and lotions from the Dollar Stores. I will also usually have practical things like toothbrushes and acetaminophen. You can buy these very cheaply at Walmart.
oops, sorry. Just watched the video and you found the word a few days ago. I haven't been doing much, had a liver infection the last 6 weeks. After a visit to the VA clinic in Manila and a local doctor, I finally have the right meds and am feeling much better. A couple more weeks and it should be just a not so fun memory.

They are nice, but hard to use because of the plastic funky nature of the material - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasalubong This word translates to Souvenir on Google Translate. Maybe these gifts make more sense as people wanting souvenirs of our relationships?
I think it is more culture based here and a sign of respect. As a foreigner participating in the custom carries extra "brownie points" because we are seen as going the extra mile to adapt to them. Much like learning learning the language (Tagalog up in Luzon, Visayan here...)
