WHY WE PROCRASTINATE OR AVOID SHOWERING?
I have realized over time that I avoid a shower. This is not because I do not want to shower, but because I feel uncomfortable. I procrastinate or avoid showering.

DIRTY PLACE

  1. Buckets and dipper are dirty.
  2. The bucket and dipper are the same as the dipper used to clean your butt or anus.
  3. We are sharing.

SHARING

  1. Modesty or shyness
  2. Worried about the males in common shower watching.
  3. Not wishing to wait in line.
  4. Not wanting to be in the same location as the prior person. Feel like you are showering with them.

DIFFICULT

  1. Train or bus leaves at 4:00 in the morning.
  2. Early and cannot because the common shower is busy.

COLD

  1. Cold Water.
  2. Cold air when leaving the shower.
  3. Not enough towel to dry.

SOLUTIONS:

  1. Carry a large beach towel to dry easily and warmth.
  2. Rent rooms that have a private bath.
  3. Carry your own bucket and dipper.
  4. Carry toilet paper because your dipper is for shower, not for toilet paper.
  5. Carry an 3 immersion heaters to warm the water.
  6. Carry a brush and laundry powder bleach to clean toilet and shower.

MINIMUM WATER USAGE SHOWER

  1. Use a dipper or bottles of water.
  2. Wet yourself.
  3. Fill up dip and wet sponge.
  4. Wipe yourself down using the water in the dipper.
  5. RINSE IN COLD WATER THE DIPPER AND SPONGE -DO NOT USE HOT.
  6. Wash hair while body is still lather downed using very little soap.
  7. Take dipper and fill and pour water on your head.

HOT WATER

  1. It is better to take a shower around 3 -5 in the afternoon in almost any underdeveloped country. If you check and they have a black or blue water tank on the roof this tank will be warm or hot at this time of day.
  2. Some countries will boil water for you. i.e. India
  3. Gas - Immediate delivery upon demand.
  4. Electric Nozzle with immediate delivery upon demand.
  5. Bucket of water heated with an electric immersion heater.
  6. Bucket of water sat in the sun.
  7. Bottle Water Shower - Fill up maybe 6 or more bottles of water, sit in sun for the afternoon. Take your sponge bath.
  8. Boiled water in Hotel - In India they will bring you a bucket of hot water for about 3-10 Rupees. Tourist areas are more difficult on this process, but it is possible.
  9. 1/2 of Hot Water and 1/2 of Cold Water can double your water.
  10. A sponge bath works very well. A good way to warm the water is to let the water sit over night in the warm air, then in the daylight allow it to
  11. Getting very hot by running or walking hours will make a cold shower seem warmer.

ELECTRICITY

  1. FIND THE BREAK SWITCH - You MUST know where the breaker switch is located and you need to check to see if the electricity is on. They will turn it off. Do NOT depend on them leaving it on an you having hot water 24 hours a day. This is just not the case in cheap countries.
  2. It takes a minimun of 30 minutes and better one hour to heat an electric or gas hot water heater.

GAS

  1. The Hotel staff will turn off the gas and shut off the pilot light. Check to see if the pilot light is on.

HOW MUCH WATER IS NEEDED FOR A SHOWER?

  1. Minimum 2 liters.
  2. Best is about 10 liters or 10 Quarts.
  3.

SOLAR HEATED WATER - SPONGE BATH

  1. Fill containers of water the night before.
  2. Allow the temperature of water to rise up to room temperature.
  3. Place in the direct sunlight as early as possible.
  4. If possible put on a black surface that absorbs the heat, such as tarmac or asphalt.
  5. Take a sponge bath.
  6. To conserve water if when you are wetting your body the use of a sponge or allowing the water to drain back into the tub will conserve water.

Bucket of water shower heated by an immersion heater - Hanging over the edge immersion heater.

  1. Water may take up to 30 minutes to heat.
  2. Make sure the water is correct level on immersion heater of you will burn it up.
  3. The top of the water will heat up fast, so you need to feel the bottom of the bucket, when the bottom of the bucket is hot the water is ready.
  4. Do not walk around barefoot when doing this, you may get electrical shock.

Bucket of water shower heated by an immersion heater - Sitting on bottom of bucket immersion heater.

HOT WATER TANK PROBLEMS?

  1. Need to make sure the switch is on, do not take a shower unless the switch is on.
  2. Need to be on for minimum of 30 minutes before showering.
  3. The owner will shut off all the time.
  4. You cannot find the switches.
  5. You cannot find the location of the heater.
  6. Travel time of water. I have had to wait as long as 20 minutes for the water to reach the tap from the hot water tank. "Taxco Mexico." Wait a long time before you decide there is no hot water.

MISCONCEPTIONS

  1. The dipping of water and pouring over your head in the USA and a lot of the more modern countries would be difficult because the water would destroy the carpet or wood floors in the bathrooms. But in most poor countries the bath area and whole house is 100 percent concrete and is designed for water to flow to a floor drain. This makes it possible to have a dip and pour on your head shower easy and with very little mess.

CONSERVATION OF WATER

  1. A sponge will absorb and allow the minimal amount of water to use.
  2. When wetting your body hang over the buck to allow the water to drain into bucket.
  3. Mix a bucket of hot water with a bucket of cold water.
  4. Shower with another person.
  5. Rinse from the top down.

SHARED VERSUS PRIVATE SHOWERS - COMMON VERSUS PRIVATE SHOWERS

  1. If there is only one shower you may have problems with a common shower. A good Hotel or Hostel needs at least 2 shower stalls. Note that in some countries the number of people actually taking a shower is minimum and you will have little problems. There is also a conception in Europe that taking a shower is bad for you.
  2. Rubber slip on sandals helps you go and return from the shower, and minimizes the change of fungus problems.

SHOWER STRATEGIES:

  1. I like to wet down and clean my face and hair in the morning, and take a shower later in the day after a long bus trip and when the heat of the day is full and maybe the water is warmer from the sun.
  2. I allow the water to sit overnight allowing the temperature of the water to rise to room temperature, and then take a dip and pour shower in the morning.
  3. If I am in a Hotel that has a Hot Water tank, I am the first one in the morning to take a shower. Sometime I have to wait as long as 20 minutes for the hot water to run in the shower until it reaches from the Hot Water Heater to my room.
  4. Dip and pour shower in lakes. If you dip the top 4 inches of water off the top of a lake it will be warmer than the deeper depths.

PROBLEM TO BE WARY OF...

  1. Running out of water in the tank after your body or hair is full of soap. Mexico - India
Solution: Have a bucket and fill it up as you shower or before. This is your backup water source.
  2. Sometime the people in India are using the same dipper to dip shower to clean their anus as you are suppose to use to dip shower. You may want to carry a plastic cup of your own.

COLD WATER SHOWERS

  1. Do not use very much soap or it will take more COLD water to rinse.
  2. The deeper you go in a lake the colder. If you can take a bath in shallow water it will be warmer.

EXPERIMENTS - SOLAR HEATING OF WATER

Heating buckets of water in the sun.
January 20, 2004 in Sawegram, India in about 85 degree weather and very nice and pleasant at 11:40 AM I placed 2 buckets of water out in the sun. 1 was of blue plastic, and the other of metal.

SIMPLE SOLAR WATER - Concentric Tubing on Roof
The simplest way for a Hostel or Hotel to have solar heated water is to have a large roll of plastic tubing on a flat roof at the top of the building, the longer the tube the better and as the water leaves a holding tank it will enter the concentric coils of black plastic tubing. This black tubing will become very hot quickly.
