I am a lucky man, today I will experience Yom Kippur Day of Atonement with two new Israeli friends here in San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala Lago Atitlan.
"It is madness for sheep to talk peace with a wolf."
- Thomas Fuller
Yesterday, September 25, 2012 at roughly 3:00 PM in the village of San Pedro La Laguna, on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala an Israeli husband and wife explained how they would participate in Yom Kippur. We stood together on the third floor balcony of the Hotel San Antonio looking at the San Pedro Volcano behind the village on the hill, and I thought to myself,
"I am a lucky man, and should be grateful."
They would fast from 5:00 PM on September 25, 2012 until 6:00 PM on September 26, 2012.
Today, the morning of September 26, it is dark, quiet, and peaceful in my room, and I have this thought,
"there are a few good sheep in all flocks."
I am a lucky man, I have visited 90 countries, and stood to the side as new friends worshiped their good Gods: there are good people on the planet.
Today, I will avoid the temptation to negotiate with the wolf.
--- All is merely illusion...
Shalom to you all, paz no guerra. I once celebrated Shabbas on a Friday sunset on a small Lake Nicaragua Island near Granada with two Turkish Jews, who spoke Ladino, which has similarities to Spanish and prayed in Hebrew, as a guide in Guatemala many years ago gave discounts to young Israelis coming from or going into IDF, I know as I was once drafted in the 1960s.
