If you spend the proper amount of time of properly brushing and flossing your teeth you will kill the bacteria responsible for mouth odor. Other odors can come from stomach problems and/or pungent smelling foods you've eaten. Alcohol use to be used in mouthwashes, then they found out it causes a variety of health problems - like cancer. They put in tricolsan and then found out it was killing the normal flora of good bacteria that kept the bad bacteria in check.
Brush/floss simple - avoid smelly foods, and see a dentist/doctor if the odor persist. One of the sickest foulest, "sweet" smells I encounter is from people with periodontal disease - the smell of blood/bacteria and pus.
