Anguilla St Martin / Sint Maarten

I am in Antigua, Guatemala now.
I will fly to New York City on April 2, 2006

I left Anguilla, too the ferry to the French Part of the Island of St Martin.
Stay a few days in St Martin. Had a very bad day, gave up on Caribbean
walked into an internet cafe and purchased a plane ticket the next
day for Guatemala.

I will fly from Guatemala to JFK airport in New York on the 2nd of April,
go and visit Penn State University. Then on the 10th of April I will
fly to Budapest Hungary.

Caribbean Escape
I am in Guatemala

I have escaped the Caribbean, probably one of my worst travel destinations in
9 years of travel. It could or maybe would be great on a who-cares-about-money
vacation in a resort with a beautiful girl.

It has taken me three weeks to forget the place, I was so frustrated with the low
value for my money, and I went into an Internet Café, purchased a ticket with
American Airlines online to Guatemala and left the next day.

I am now living in Guatemala, life is extremely better. I am in a hotel with free
internet access in my room for 13 dollars per night here in Antigua, Guatemala.
I had a wonderful room in Marios Rooms in Panajachel, Guatemala on Lake Atitlan.

The same room in the Caribbean would cost me 100 dollars; hard to feel good
when you have this feeling constantly you are paying too much.

The reason I travel is to enjoy life, I want to live in a roll out of bed walk around
city where I can say hello, how are you, to the locals. I want to enjoy the people
I meet. This is Guatemala, they are friendly, look at me,
admit I exist. Then they say,
- Hola -

There are two main types of tourist, people that visit a country to look at the country.
There are tourists that wish to learn about the culture of the people that live in the country.

The first likes to see buildings, trek, go on safari, live in resorts, do anything,
except live with the local people or be on a bus with them.

The second, ME, likes to talk with the locals, hear about their lives, ride on the
buses with them and enjoy their culture. Now, let us be real, I do not like all cultures
and would consider the Caribbean culture extremely difficult, like living in a
Gangster Rap MTV video that never ends.

I am amiss to know why person love the cities of the planet. I do believe we
should love our neighbor, say hello, and try to be friends. All the rock musicians
sing these songs of love, friendship, and then the world ignores the
person next to them.

Panajachel Guatemala is one of the beautiful places on the planet, a place
where children say hello, try to talk, and want to invite you to their home.
A place where life is primitive, however maybe, just maybe the place where
everyone does know your name. I cannot be bothered anymore with a life of
ignoring people; I cannot live in places where I do not want to talk with people.
I am an Indiana boy that enjoys saying hello, and hoping the person replies.
I feel sorry for a person that does not believe all persons deserve a reply.
I am grateful to be able to leave places, as much as I am grateful to visit
places on the planet. The Hobo is doing well at finding money to live.

I am doing some soul searching; I suppose the wanderlust is gone with meeting
other cultures and places. I now have to enjoy living in other countries. Finding
new friends, a good conversation, nice persons and avoiding the
I-am-in-a-hurry-to-see-everything tourist is my goal.

Taking the time to smell the roses as the cliché says.

Where is my Hotel Safe?

Photos of good safe for hotel room:
http://www.hobotraveler.com/193_15-tip-safe-in-hotel.shtml

I have traveled the planet for 9 years, what is sad is I am expected to trust the
hotel for my safety. Yes, some hotels go give me a small safe, but too
small for my computer.

This safe, cheap to make is almost ideal. I can use my own personal
padlock. If I lose the key we can go find a hacksaw and cut the lock off,
I am the only person that has a key.
A hotel first priority should be the safety of it guest, every hotel has problems
with the staff stealing. I refuse to allow the owners, staff, management to share
the keys to my valuables.

Bottom line is I do not trust a person I just met when I checked into a hotel, this is silly.

This is the first good safe I have encountered in 9 years of travel. There are a
few lockers that come close, however most are too thin.
Ideally this would have an electrical plug INSIDE the safe, therefore I could charge
my Cell Phone, Computer while I am not in the room.

Life is good.
Have fun! Life is Good!

As always, these are suggestions. Please realize I am
giving guidance, and there are always other opinions.
“One mans paradise, is another mans hell”
This way we do not all go to the same place.
