Experienced in Bogotá

I find I am totally incapable of caring about where to travel.
It has become increasing an annoyance to think about places to
visit, all I can muster is a vague direction and something to do with
liking to feel warm and comfortable with the weather.

I am going north towards the USA to visit Mom and Dad, say
hello to the neighbors, then I think I will go East and West.

Heads California, Tails Germany.

I need new gym shoes, mine are stinking.
They say made in Thailand and the rubber is no good.
Five pairs of Reeboks and the sixth pairs a dud.

I am tired of being bumped in South America and need to leave,
however I will miss the girls, however I am thinking a lot about
Israel and Eastern Europe, so there is lots of hope.
I need a date to do Africa.

I am sure, when I find that cheap ticket plane ticket to somewhere
I will walk out the door, every place is the same and every place
is unique, I just need the next ticket.

German Escobar Travel Expert

I stopped in Bogotá only to see German a Colombian man that was a
long-term traveler of 15 years. On the road for 15 years and over
120 countries. We have been friends for more or less five years
and correspond by email over travel questions.

I am staying in the Platypus Hostel a proper Hostel completed with
Kitchen, Common areas and some fellow travelers for conversation.
A place where you can learn how to travel. I have returned to find
some answers for myself from the only true travel expert I know.
I know a few specialists on travel, however I know only one true overall
expert and that is German.

German is capable of adapting and traveling anywhere on the planet,
he just needs the money and he could be gone tomorrow.

I took him to lunch, we compared notes, and I learned from the master.

Questions and Answers

What is your favorite country?
Malawi Africa... Alaska

Why did you stop traveling?
Wanted to stay in one location, thought I would give it a try, I knew I could always leave.

Where do you want to visit?
New Zealand, the Great Barrier Reef, I lacked 200 dollars and could not
afford to go. Also all them Soviet Satellite countries that are being opened.

What makes you an expert traveler?
Experience, I have the experience to deal with most situations.

How many times robbed?
Once in Stockholm Sweden.

What kept you traveling?
Curiosity and I did not believe people; I wanted to go to the next country
to see for myself. People.

Could you travel to see only places?
I traveled to meet people, places only make you compare. This beach
is like that beach; this Church is not like that Church. I like to visit markets
where I meet authentic people.

Do you think you could have traveled 15 years only thinking about places?
No, I need people, places are not as important as people are.

What do you want of your Hostel?
A Friendship Club, like Japan.

In Japan the language is difficult, the signs are in Japan and very difficult
to travel. You will walk along and there will be a sign on a house that says,
“Friendship Club.”

You can knock on the door, and they will speak English, not much, however
enough to help you, I like these places. A place that helped me, so
I help people here in the Hostel.

What should I do German for my travels?
Have a rest, I always stopped in places and stayed for a couple of months.
Find places to rest.

---- This does not mean to stop travel, it means rest along the path.
A traveler does not think about stopping,
it is not part of the conversation.

He never ask the question,
"When are you going to stop?"
He knows this question is silly, a traveler travels, they do not
stop until they one day stop and do not leave. He only wants to know
when will I leave.

My comments and thoughts were interspersed and this is just a make up
of what we talked about from my notes. We are not serious people and
do not try to make a perfect world.

I admire German because he traveled very cheap, knows every trick there is
to find a way through the big money areas. I was talking about Europe
and he laughed, save Europe for when you are old, it is easy.

I asked him if he traveled with people and he said quite a few times,
he laughed and said he put an ad in the paper to find a companion to
travel across the Sahara in Africa. He found this girl that was a lesbian.
He said he did not care, however he wished she had told him she hated men.

We talk a lot about how to meet the correct people along the paths, how to
find the best situations to meet people and what makes life good for a traveler.
There are the inevitable Visa and Passport problems of travel. He is from
Colombia and I am born lucky in the USA. A Colombia Passport closes
doors while a USA Passport opens doors. It is amazing to me his ability to
open doors, the experience this requires and understanding of people is

German does not have a Mobile Cell telephone and does not want life to
become too fast. He is very knowledgeable of the internet, travel, every
possible advantage of the modern world, however keeps it in balance.
Married to a German girl his two children are going not at around age
10 to study in Germany where the education is better and free.

He said,
“They like Germany, here I am a good Colombian boy, thinking, and how
can they like Germany. However in Germany they can ride their bikes
around with no problem.”

I came to ask German where to travel, how to travel, what to do now?
I have traveled all the easy places, except Europe and what to know
what to do with myself. I am too lonely and need to figure out how to
find some travel companions, or a way to convince some girl I am not
crazy, and it is safe to come travel with a person that is not stopping.

I told him,
“I think I will go to their nest and pluck them out. Make sure they know
they can return home. I need a Date to travel across Africa and deep
into the Amazon. There are islands on the planet, which are paradise;
however, you can only leave when the boat is ready to leave.
That could be one day or one month.”

He says to rest more in places. I understand him to me to make
sure and recharge may batteries, be in a safe place, with friends,
and talk to recharge for the place where there is only me.
I think he wants me to stay in Bogota.

I am looking to go over the rainbow, some new place off the map.
German knows about places like them, and knows how to open the door.

I am off to the USA; recharge the batteries, clean sheets, quiet places,
and friends, then off somewhere.

I need to talk to someone that knows how to travel better than me,
not easy to find.

Talking to the experienced Master.
German Escobar.

"It would surpass the powers of a well man nowadays
to take up his bed and walk..."

A well man does not walk out the door without a plan,
the wise man carries a map, a good tourist will buy a guidebook,
and ask many friends for advice.

The fantasy of travel does not have a plan,
it only require you walk out the door,
no reasons, not plan, no idea or where and why.

Dreams are your guide, curiosity is your map,
your friends know you are crazy, so you never ask advice.
