LEAVING FOR BRISTOL, ENGLAND

I leave Barcelona, Spain.
I go to Bristol, England... Tomorrow.
- Oops. I am am already there
and this letter was delayed.

Peter says he will pick me up with the Rolls,
but then says something about a Toyota.
I keep hoping one of these travel friends will be
a multi millionaire in disguise. But no such luck. Yet.

What would be better yet would be for Shakira to
start writing me and use another name until I arrange
a meet. That would be a dream trip. I keep offering
to help her practice English.

Back to real life. I am off to England in search of
Castles and a few Princesses. But I will probably only
learn about the tea and discover what this
"Pub Culture" is all about. Peter is a good guide, but
has too much energy for me. I try to limit any tourism
or voyeurism to about 2 hour per day. I figure I can save
the rest for a future life. Then I go relax.

FORBES.COM - BIG EXCITEMENT THIS WEEK

The Forbes.com website picked 5 blogs to say or talk about
as the best Travel Blogs. HoboTraveler.com a.k.a. Me was
on the list. I think I am tied for number 4 or last.. hehehe
They do not like my "Reputation" or my "Presentation."

2 steps above a bum.
1 step above a tramp.

Yo. I be HOBO.
Nothing to do with reputation or presentation!
Get on the turnip truck people.

OK. Enough laughs
Thank you Forbes.com for choosing HoboTraveler.com
Blog for this honor. It is one of the first big Kudos I have
received from the press. I should really probably
thank the writer.... Que Guapa - Christina  (Replace with correctttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt)
Thank You.

But they are also asking the readers to vote.
Go read about this and vote... FOR ME.

I have told you about my blog a little. But a blog is a
a log of daily events. a.k.a. For a traveler this is called a
Travelogue. I never kept one until before the trip to Iraq.
The newsletter is more or less my travel log. But the blog
is much more thorough and really just too easy to do.
I just get on there. Collect ideas, ramble about stuff and
have fun making fun of me and them. Whoever that is?

WORLD HERITAGE LIST
UNESCO

I am not prepared for this subject.
But needs to be said. You should

GO THIS WAY!

The UNESCO in the world of Acronyms
has made a list of culturally or historically
or some reason important places. This list
is a great place to start to plan your trip.

It has something to do with the United Nations.
But that is not really important.

Check out this list before you leave for a trip.
It will help you narrow down the long list to the short
list of places you should or must see.

I am not saying you have to go and look.
But it is good place to start. I have looked at
the list and I am sure a lots of places are chosen
for political reason. But whatever the reasons.
This is still a very good list to start your planning.
http://whc.unesco.org/heritage.htm

Now if they had a city with the list.
Life would be real easy.

I say Thank You to Peter M from Bristol
for this idea. I will collect more information and
make into a tip eventually.

Here is the start.

~ TODAY’S TRAVEL TIPS

A SEASON IN EUROPE
Doing Europe ... or The States.

Misery has many forms. Following the normal
traveler or tourist around Europe would qualify
as a form of misery for me and would not enable me
to get by the open windows safely.

I press my self to understand or empathize with
the typical tourist to Europe. It seems so arrogant
to think or say to others.
"I think they are all crazy. Why would they do this?"

But this thought has crossed the front of my brain
so many times that I can not ignore the possibility
that I am actually right. They are all crazy.
Europe may be the most uncomfortable, crowded,
expensive, inhospitable place I have ever traveled.

Most of the young backpackers are on a European party trip
with mamas money so this does not apply.
Their number one priority is party and so the only
information needed for them is when and where?

BEEN THERE!
If a person was honest. There is the natural desire to
say to your friends. I have "been there." I have
"done that." For those of you with that desire. A quick
Euro-rail pass trip through Europe is perfect.

TOUR
A tour is safe, easy and a no brainer. This is probably
a good choice and the least painful for those who wish to join
the self appointed members of the victims of travel society.
Some of you must volunteer to be pushed and prodded
like cattle around the world to take pictures.

But for myself, what I am describing above is misery.
A way to go to Europe, but not how to enjoy Europe.

MONEY
This is a big problem. People say to me how easy
it was for them to travel to Paris. I realize and resist
the temptation to slap them. I know they are trying to
be helpful, but spending 300 dollars a day does make
life simple. But who wants to work for half the year to
pay for vacation. I would rather quit work and stay at
home and go to the park.

DO EUROPE?
What do I mean by doing Europe.
To do, or go about, or to hang around is a way to live
and enjoy a place. Like taking a walk over to the park
and hanging out looking at the pigeons. This to me
is the art of doing a country or Europe. I want to hang
out and try to figure out... "Why am I there or here?"

So to DO a place you need to buy some time.
I have accepted that Europe is crazy. Too much and too
many people walking around. Like the day before Christmas
and everyone is shopping. How can you enjoy a vacation
when it involves so much work?

TRAVEL versus LIVING?
I call myself a traveler, but in reality. I live on the road.
I wander from place to place and wonder why I am there?
Traveling around Europe is a pain.
Living around Europe is enjoyable. So maybe the better
way to look at Europe is to say to myself. I am going to
travel to Europe to live... For a month or two, maybe a
year, or until whenever I need to go home.

ONE MONTH MINIMUM
I venture to say that to enjoy Europe it takes at least
a one month trip. Travel to Europe and live one month
in a city. Make it your base. Then you can travel to the
countries close to your base and enjoy them at your leisure.
Take a pair of pants, a couple of shirts and leave
for a couple of days, explore the area, then return to
your home in Europe and location of your big bag.

A ROOM WITH A VIEW  OR APARTMENTS
This solves the hotel and money problem.
Search for a room in an apartment and not for a hotel or hostel.
Look for a place to live! Do Europe. To find an room
takes more work then calling up your travel agent. But in the
last few years the internet has become a cheap and easy
way to communicate with the world. Sometimes when I am
not looking or paying attention the world changes.

There are now webpage devoted to helping you go live in
other countries. Finding a room or an apartment and
enjoy or do a country or continent. Sort of like in living
in the Penthouse suite for one tenth the money.

ONLY EUROPE - NORTH AMERICA
Do not drive yourself crazy with this idea. Europe and
North America are the places where finding a
room in an apartment may be more enjoyable then a hotel.
75 percent of the world you can just wander around
and wonder why you are there. The cost and finding a
room is the least of your worries.

SPEND A SEASON IN EUROPE OR USA
Every young USA person should spend a
season in Europe.
Every young European person should spend a
season in the States.

Go and live. Do Europe or the States.

Here are some pages to help find a new home
away from home.

Note for you purist. I think staying more then one
month in one location is starting to say you live there
and you may lose your status as qualified to call yourself
a "Traveler." You must leave, not live.

WARNING WARNING WARNING
All the web-pages below are full.
I said FULL! of people trying
to gouge the tourist or travelers out of money.
This means... They LIE. They FIB. They are full of S@#$.

GUIDELINES FOR PRICE OF ROOM
You should be able to find a reasonable room for under
400 Dollars USA in Europe or the USA. There is so much
bad information on price of rooms that only 1 listing in 20
is even worth considering if you want to live on a budget.
But I would try to get one for 200 Dollars or 200 Euros.
(I paid 300 Euros for a room in Barcelona.)

GO TO THIS PAGE FIRST
I highly recommend for Hotels Reservations.
http://reservations.bookhostels.com/hobotraveler.com/

DIRECTIONS - PLEASE READ FIRST
1. Find the cheapest bed price available in the chosen city
with the reservation link.
2. Multiply the price of room times 15.
This is the maximum price for a Barefoot Hobo to pay.
(This is a guide. Please think. Keep brain in on position.)
3. Then look in the links below and search for rooms.
You need to start looking 1-2 months before you leave.
Any earlier and they will not hold a room.
4. Another way would be to get a Hotel or Hostel reservation.
Stay in the room for one week and search for a room in
an apartment. I have found a lot or rooms posted in the
internet cafes, and the Universities.

FIND OUT A GOOD TARGET PRICE HERE
http://reservations.bookhostels.com/hobotraveler.com/
Note.. I make money off this, but it is a good service.
I only use this for the first days in a country.
And it does not cost extra for you to use.

NO GO SEARCH FOR ROOM
http://www.tntmagazine.com Very good England.
http://www.expatriates.com
Need to monitor apartments daily.
http://www.globalfreeloaders.com/ Short term.
http://www.escapeartist.com/ Getting too expensive.
But one of the old tried and true sites of expatriates.
http://ihousing.iagora.com/
http://www.iespana.es/tatiproject_es/rooms/

I would also search in Google.com for

( - city going to visit - word room - share - apartment )
So I would type in that search box of google.com
somthing like this.

paris  room shared apartment monthly
http://www.google.com

There are lots of sites. These are only the ones I know
presently. Forums and message boards can help you
locate rooms.

FORUMS TO CHECK
This takes a long time, but maybe they can help.
Full of liars also. Be careful!

~ HOBO QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

COMMENT

Dear Andy,

Christopher Columbus
Italian Cristoforo Colombo
Spanish Cristóbal Colón

One of the greatest travelers of all time.
This person whether of madness, greed, or
some great spiritual need, or just maybe an
inner need to explore has my admiration
as a true traveler of the world. A hobo and
wanderer of the planet.
>>>>>>>.
Thank you for that complimentary piece on
Christopher Columbus. One rarely sees comments
like this in these Politically Correct times.
This goes to show that "PC" is tyranny with manners.
I can't believe that people have become so
spineless and not stand up to these idiots who
champion Free Speech only for themselves.

Thanks,
BD

ANSWER:
This guy is with the program.
Thank you for your comment.

Political correctness is idiocy.
Lie to make it sound better.
Or it is a way a weak person tries to extort a
powerful person. Instead of becoming powerful and
full of merit on their own. They try to sabotage another
person or company. I think from what I know about this
guy Michael Moore. He is doing this. He is
very popular in Europe. What a loser.
There should be a bounty on the self appointed
victims of the world. He does look like the stereotype
of Fat people from the USA.

Christopher Columbus is and should be celebrated.
It you only search for perfect heroes. then you are
dysfunctional and need to join some 12 step program
and keep your mouth shut. Columbus is about as perfect
as any hero can get.

I am going to say one thing about the past.
It is hard to have respect for some cultures when
the come up and urinate next to your foot. This trend
is on the downswing, but it still exist in the world.
In the past thought, It probably really existed. Hard to be so
prim and proper in a savage world.

Christopher Columbus got in a boat and had a
real chance of dieing. It is like the Astronauts. They can
die doing their job, or the soldiers. This is not games
or sitting around in the land of fruits and nuts making
comments about the past. He is a Hero.

So could bounty hunters become!

Some rumor or Anti-Columbus information
sent by readers.

The birth rate of Europe has dropped so
low I believe they will seize to exist in a few

Is this the sign of a healthy society?
