THE STOP IN THE ROAD

Hello,
I am in a small village close to the Golden Triangle
by the name of Chang Saen. The Golden Triangle
is the tourist name for the intersecting location of
the three countries of Burma, Laos, and Thailand.

The city is located on the Mekong River and instantly
spurs up memories of movies about the Vietnam War.
This place does not look anything like the movies
and I think sometimes they search hard to find them
exotic locations to film movies. But it is always
relaxing to be close to water, so I am happy.

Today In GO THIS WAY I will explain the Golden
Triangle with Opium, Heroin, and organized crime
and a Chinese influence.

PUBLISHING A BOOK
I have a publisher.
I am a collector of information, and after
5 years of travels I have collected lots of
trivial and informative ideas.

COMPLETE THOUGHTS
I like to write a complete thought in the
newsletters. A beginning, middle and end.
This is a big problem for me though
because this makes many subjects way
to large for a newsletter.

SOLUTION
Having lots of time, and carrying a rock.
a.k.a. Computer, I have now collected enough
information inside the rock to write 5-10
non-fiction books, A book is bigger than
a newsletter, but easier to read. This will
be the proper place to bring together in one place
a lot of ideas.

BORING BOOKS OR FUN BOOKS
Hmmm...
I was going to write a book on
Eco-Tourism , but have decide to delay
that book for awhile. I was thinking to myself,
“Would I buy a book on Eco-tourism?”
My answer was,
“No.”
The book still has value to write
but better I earn some money first
than worry about saving the world.
So I will save myself first.

WHAT BOOK TO WRITE?
I have decided to go for what I know
best.
Hobo Barefoot Travel.
How to travel cheap.

I like books that save me money.
That way I can afford to buy ice
cream. I use a guidebook to save
money and time.

RICH OR POOR TRAVELERS
I was talking yesterday with a man
in Mae Sai Thailand he is the owner
of 10 Jewelry stores spread from Thailand
through Australia. He travels all the time and
obviously very rich.

We sat around and discussed ways to
save money and enjoy travel. This man
has the same priorities as me. Enjoy life
and travel while getting the most for our money.
Keeping life calm.

Another friend wrote me to say that his
wife was a travel agent and only dealt
with corporate travelers.

RICH PEOPLE ARE BEST HOBOES
People do not get rich by spending money.
They got rich by saving money, or optimizing
the usage of their money.

I have found the richer the person,
The more they use my tips.
Go figure.
“Hoboes telling them rich folks what to do,
and them listening.”
What good fun.

The book is 95 percent done so
will be available very soon.
I will try to give a free book to anyone
that joins the Hobo Club, or a least
a huge discount. I hate to promise anything
it seems like the world changes so much,
so fast, that a Hobo has trouble.

HOBO CLUB 1 DOLLAR
I started the club out at 15 dollars for
a lifetime membership. I have decided
that all I want is 1 dollar. Some people think
they should raise the cost of life. I think
that lowering the cost of life is always better.
Grown up kids, and small kids like to have
fun, and this does not cost me a lot have
this clubs, so better to make it easier for
people to join. I have also added mail in
memberships.

I am going to have lot of fun with this in the
future as we get everyone a membership
card, and a nickname. Fun names to use
online to write me and other members.
Like Hobo Joe, Mapper, Boxcar Willie, etc.
Think of a good name to claim.

I have to be careful though that people do not
swamp my webpage or too many people visit.
If they whole world decided to get on my
WebPages I would go broke.

Todays - Going this way is about
The Golden Triangle.

Today tip is on

THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE
I can not say I understand the why of this term.
Where it come from? Or why the world coined it?
This in all practical sense is the term of current
fashion for tourists, writers, and guidebooks.

THE TRI-ANGLES
The word triangle is correct to represent.
1. The Triangle of the borders 3 Borders:
Myanmar (Burma), Laos, and Thailand.
2. The Triangle formed by the rivers:
3. The 3 Rivers or the TRI: ( 2 meet to become 1 )
Where the Ruak River and Mekong River meet to
continue as the Mekong River.

GOLDEN
Probably to represent the money.
Maybe to represent the colors.
But definitely a word in ENGLISH to
creates an enigma and mystery.

FACTS AND FANTASY
Wisdom would tell me that this is
not the subject where I can talk facts.
The location I am writing about has
a history in the 1000s of years and
the best truths and facts are buried and
at most are always one mans opinion and
interpretations.

WRITERS DREAMLAND
The facts and fantasy of the information
on this area although are great for the fiction writer.
The ability to translate fantasy into facts.
To take an opinion and make it an experts
observation. This is the Golden Triangle
where everyone makes money by hook or crook.

I was especially enjoying the Lonely Planets
statements that....
“The American CIA eventually became involved
in a big way using profits, from heroin runs
aboard US aircraft to Vietnam ... to finance covert
operations... “
Quoted from Lonely Planet Thailand, Page 134
Specific Author Unknown

Hell, I don’t think the President know what the CIA
does and I am sure the Lonely Planet is not on
the inside of the CIA, and if they are... Why?

I could not find who or exactly to thank or blame
for this bit of conspiracy theory wonderland.
( In a land of writing where footnotes would harm
their goals, I have include the reference... hehehe )

This is great fantasy stuff folks and a great way to
understand the GOLDEN TRIANGLE.
If you do not try to find facts and figures, or search
for understanding, and accept the illusion. Life is good.

Here you can take your ideas, half-truths, dreams,
fantasy, imaginations of reality, and make
it real this is the essence of the
GOLDEN TRIANGLE.

GOLDEN TRIANGLE IS ABOUT MONEY
Whether a travel writer makes money
by the conjuring up of his or her fantasies
and making half-truths into a guidebook or fiction story
is not important. But what is important to know.
The Golden Triangle represents money.

TRANSPORTATION
River transportation or water is cheap,
if not the cheapest way to transport
goods for trade or sell since the beginning of
time. Going downriver is easier than going
upriver. The Mekong and other larger and small
rivers flow down from China through Burma,
Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand. This is a
hub for trade and transportation of the
nefarious types.

THE CONNECTION
Like a drug dealer looking for his connection.
That is what the Golden Triangle is.
It is the connection.
It is the place where Upper Asia meets
lower Asia. Where cultures mix, and spend
money, and try to earn money.

LAND PIRATES
I have stopped looking or thinking of
explorers, discovers, or expeditions.
Crusaders, armies, or invasions as
being done for a noble cause.
THEY ARE LAND PIRATES

Whether working on their own or
sanctioned by the government.
These pirates or privateers have
the all times wondered the world to
rape, pillage, and connive to earn money
or to claim a land as their fief, and
to be a KING.

Laissez-Faire economics
(French, “let things alone”)
- Encarta Encyclopedia

Slowly the world is evolving toward world
peace. It is becoming more difficult to make
money in a shady and corrupt way each year.
It took a clever and crafty person to survive
in this land. Life is cheap, and still is cheap.
But what was once a no mans land. is now a
a tourist attraction.

The person in the past who would have been
an opium smuggler is in this day and age a tourist guide.
Whether they have changed is still up for debate.

FOR SALE OR TRADE
Slaves, Opium, Alcohol, Spices, Food, Textiles,
Stolen Gold, Prostitutes, Chickens, Fish,
Boom Boxes, or a Kingdom.
All is for sale or trade in the Golden Triangle
since the beginning of time.

All the above are still for sale.
Except for maybe the slaves.
Some would talk about sex slave, but I think
getting paid is not part of being a slave.
Opium is hard to buy, and alcohol is easy to buy.
A Kingdom is hard to conquer.
But a story here is easy to find.

The Golden Triangle is about fantasy
and some real hard realities. Where the
Land Pirates earned enough money to buy
a Kingdom by the selling what people wanted.

A place where reality has lost it bearing,
but any writer could make a buck.

The land of the
“High Poppy.”

NOTE:
I have been trying to find a Poppy field to
photograph. So far ... No luck.
Not that easy to find.

~ TODAY’S TRAVEL TIPS

MONEY - WHERE DID IT GO?

There is an art to managing money wisely.
Mostly this involves having common sense.
Then you have to remember to use common
sense and avoid temptation.

I am not a bum.
A bum wants a free handout. a.k.a. Beggar.
A Hobo will work for a days pay,
Then travels from place to place looking
for jobs or adventure.

The subtle wisdom of a Hobo is my goal, and
the art of simple essential living is
sometime best demonstrated in the fun
ways. So I use my Hobo way of looking
at the world to explain how to live and
travel cheap.

Here are some simple guidelines and
an outline of the 5 types ways the money
leaves your pocket or disappears. If you know
where the money goes and the problems
you can make the money last the longer
and not go home.

When traveling the world and living in
the underdeveloped countries.

“It is twice as easy to save a dollar
than it is to earn a dollar.”

THE 5 WAYS MONEY DISAPPEARS

1. LOSE STUFF.
We lose a shirt, we lose pen, we forget
an leave a book in the hotel room. These probably
happens a lot more than getting robbed.

2. ROBBED
Pickpockets, scams, and people that bump
you and run off with your backpack.
The laundry keeps one of your shirts.
Your shoes get robbed from in front of your room.

3. BROKEN
We step on things, break things, or loan
a friend an umbrella and it comes back
broken.

4. BORROWED OR LOANED TO FRIENDS
We loan some money, we give them our
guidebook, and for some reason....
They do not return it

5. NOT SAVING MONEY
You could have spent less, but you spent more.

EARNING MONEY
To earn money in other countries is another
story. But to explain in simple term again.
When the normal person earns 10 dollars
a day it become very difficult to earn the same
money as you earned at home. So when I say
it is twice as easy to save one dollar than to
earn a dollar this is the truth. Maybe 5 times
as easy to save a dollar is more correct.

HOW TO HAVE COMMON SENSE.
I think common sense would say.
Just ask questions of everything.

START BY ASKING:
How do I lose things?
How am I robbed?
How are thing broken?
Who borrowed what? Why?
How can I save money?
Would it be harder to earn or save?

Whether you are rich or poor.
This Hobo Common sense applies.
Just keep asking these questions of yourself
and others and somewhere in the path you will
become a Barefoot HoboTraveler.
Or maybe a
Free thinker.

As always, these are suggestions. Please realize I am
giving guidance, and there are always other opinions.
“One mans paradise, is another mans hell”
This way we do not all go to the same place.

TODAY’S TIP FROM THE
“Peanut Gallery”
Fun tips - Here's a little tip from me, to you,
as an experienced traveler.

TOILET SEAT UP PLEASE - Ladies - The men travelers
in these underdeveloped countries would like
to request you leave the toilet top and seat up
to allow it to drip dry. The shower head that is located
directly about the toilet keeps it wet from people
showering. If you would learn to leave the seat up
it would be appreciated.
