What type of traveler are you?
Issue 62- Hobotraveler.com - March 16, 2002
A Hobo trip around the world. Year 4

Website is down.
It will be down for a few days to weeks. An argument
with my internet server or host. I will move.

(Dawn in ILO, Peru)

Had to make a quick search for a cup of coffee.
7:00 in the morning in the Latino world is not the time
to go look for a place to buy coffee. Most stores
do not open until 9:00. I was in luck, and the owner of the
Hostal helped me find a place.

I take a sip of coffee, and I am back in business.
Needed that rush.

Nice bunch of people out walking around at this time of
day. Fresh and ready to start the day. They seem to be
the people that are ahead of schedule and not behind schedule.
I suppose I am always ahead of schedule. So these are my
type of people. I like the people in life that have time for life.

I will leave the country today, and that is alwasys a good
feeling. Entering a different country is like putting in a new
lightbulb when the old one burns out. Just seems a little

I will wait til 9:00 to send this newsletter in the internet cafe
down the street, then go to the bus stop.

Before I go too far.
All links are broken in this newsletter.
The will work in a week or so.

The time has also came to work on the past, and fix
all the archives and such. I cannot modify or fix links in the
free Topica.com archives that is the sender or host of my newsletters.
I will soon have all 60 plus letters on my WebPages so I can
repair problems and you can read those old
boring past letters again.. hehehe (For reference)
Plus I am getting rid of ridiculous and old advertisements also.

I am sorry for the frustration of broken links, and pages
down, and such. I can just hear some of you saying.
Everything is broken... Blah blah blah
If it was easy to travel through underdeveloped countries.
Write a newsletter. Put up photos, and make WebPages.
Then everyone would be doing it. There has to be
compromises. So I keep following the path, good
or bad. I am in Peru.
I cannot just stop traveling to let the world catch up.
What takes 2 hours at home take me 2 weeks in the way
that I have to write and edit pages.
Back and forth...
Back and forth...
Back and forth...to the internet cafe.
What did I forget this time.

Got a little stir crazy in Arequipa, Peru and decided
I needed to kill two birds with one stone. It is time to
renew my 90 day tourist card for Peru, and I needed to get
tan. So I left Arequipa and I am now at a small port or beach
town called ILO. It is about 2 hours from the Chile border and
after I get may suntan back up to standards I will go to Arica, Chile
for a couple of day. Then when I return back to Peru, they will
automatically give me 90 more days. (I hope)

Now all this may seem a little strange. But if you travel a long
time you may actually stay in the country longer than allowed
by the government. Most countries allow about 90 days,
and some more, or less. Dealing with the government offices
to extend the visa is very frustrating. I find it a lot
easier to leave the country and return.

Some countries, and I will try to leave them anonymous (Mexico)
Make this renewal process a great way to earn a little extra
cash for the people that work in the offices. They will make
life difficult until you sort of have a few extra dollars.

So I will cross the border and return. The large numbers of
people entering the country makes it difficult to play games.

I have been working hard on another
toy for my website. I am trying to put on a live webcam.
For those of you, and probably most of you. A webcam is a camera
that will send pictures to the internet. In simple terms.
You could go to a webpage and see where I am at or live TV.
On the internet.
(If it is not dark or nighttime)

This would be lots of fun, and I could put my new friends on live
internet broadcast. I think I have it figured out, but anyone out
there who is smarter than me... Probably most... Send me
how you do it? And maybe I will go faster.

I suppose a good start would be to buy a webcam.
If you already have a webcam up and running.
Feel free to write on instructions or recommendations.
If you know way too much about webcams. Maybe you
are on the sex sites way too much. This type of thing is
very popular with them.

I know of a perfect place for a webcam. In Agua Calientes
at the bottom of the hill where the train comes into Machu Picchu.
They have an internet connection there, but is very expensive.
It would be lots of fun to put one there, but that would require
a sponsor.... aka... Money

Otavalo Ecuador at the central market would be another good one.
And probably easier to do.

OK. I am just dreaming up ways to have fun.

Here is a pop quiz?
I am in ILO, Peru.
Jimmy Buffet the singer sang a song.

“Some say a ________ to blame.
I think it’s my own damn fault.”

(Hope I quoted that correctly)

Fill in the blank?

I know Jeff K. knows the answer.

La Vida Buena
Beso y Abrazos

~   Hoboguide.com GO THIS WAY !

I met a man and his family about three years ago at one of my
favorite beaches in the world. Pie de la Cuesta, Mexico. North of
Acapulco about 8 miles. His name is John T. and over the last 3-4
years he has listened to my ranting and ravings both by newsletter
and personal email. Sort of a combination of friend, older brother, and
mentor, but never the enemy.

John also has traveled around the world budget style and so there
is this common bond that maybe only two hobo’s could have.

I met another man in Iquitos, Peru that had truly done something
Something that got my attention quickly, and held it. What he did
reminded me
of David Clark telling me he was sailing around the world alone.
My heart sort of dropped, and slowed a couple of beats. Waiting for
me to become accustom to the water, or just a new way of thinking.
Some thoughts are large, and I need to make a new place in my mind
to store and feel these types of ideas.

I am trying to think of a way to explain what this person did, without
telling you. It would not help me, or him to minimize his
accomplishment. Let it be said, that he made me feel that the
I have had are small in comparison. He truly did something special.

I am not National Geographic Magazine, and I do not think of myself as
a travel write. I am just some strange guy that tries to weave a tale,
will help you to understand the other sides of life.

So here I am in Iquitos talking to a person that really lived on the
side of most peoples life. That shadow side of dreams, and fantasies.
Of accomplishing something that no other person tries. My mind
was racing, and I needed time to think. I ask him politely if I could
take some pictures, and write a story.. I was excited.
I had found a great story.

We talked for another fifteen minutes and I left. We would meet
again to talk and I could take some photographs. This was going
to be that fun story I wrote that you would all want to send to
your friends.

I have the perfect story. He was at the end of his trip, and I could
get the scoop. Write that great human interest story that breaks
you heart, and shows you the profound nature of the human

I am sure that in his tale of adventure is that story.
But it will not be me that write it.

So what happened? I wrote off to John T. a quick and long letter of
some frustrations in my mind. I explained the whole story to him
of this fellow traveler, and what he was doing, why, and all sorts of
fun stuff. But in the end. I admitted to John.
“I do not like the guy”.

He gave me that ring around the tub feeling. Like there was some
piece of him that got on me, and I could not get it off. I did not
get any great Karma feelings from him. My Ying was not his Yang.
There was not part of me, that wanting anything like a meeting of
the minds.

But... But... But.... Its the perfect story.

I met a girl in Oaxaca, Mexico that had traveled for six years.
I ask her,
“Why do you travel?”
She said,
“Travel is the most selfish thing you can do in your life”.
“I am selfish”.

That kind of statement you remember.
Frank and honest. But of course I have traveled for four years
now, and that statement follows me the whole way.
“Am I selfish?”
I am sure there is some truth in all statements.

So... Back to the great story, and where it goes.
I did not like this gentleman because he represented what
this girl was talking about. He did everything for selfish reasons.
He would talk to me if I could help him. Only if I could help him.
If I could help him get famous. If I could help him make money.
If I could help him solve his problems.
If I was not helping him.
I was of no value.
He did not say it that way, but that is what he ment.

After I told the story to John, he replied:

“I also think that the conflicts on what we see and feel are often times

the things that make us think the most.

Sometimes we even can resolve in ourselves a course of action of
non-action because it has touched inside.

As in your case, you decided
not to do some things related to the xxxxxx. That is why I spoke of
(Mark) Twain, he also was struggling with ethics and more.

Great advice....but I had to think about if for about 2 months
to understand.

I could not do it. I could not write about this person. He was not
anything or anyone that I would want my children (If I had any, I don’t)
to grow up to be like. He was not a hero.

I suppose the compromises we make in life can either make
our lives better or can diminish the flame. I did not want to
douse my love for travel by helping this person to represent the
good or best in travelers. He did not.

It would have been a good tale, and you would have thought.
Gee... That Andy is lucky. He meets some good folks.
But.. I would have become just like that guy. Writing
and doing things only if they could help me.

Dredging through these thoughts and feeling, and at the end
of the road with this particular thought. I am still always followed
by a nagging an persistent question.
“Why am I traveling?”

I hitched hiked to Florida one time. It took about three day from
my home, and was a time of running away from myself and my

People asked...
“Wasn’t you scared”
I suppose I was in someway, but after the first few rides. I was
looking forward to the next ride, and the new person I would meet.
Now that is a happy thought.

Hitchhiking is probably dangerous, but also fun.
(With a statement like that. It is no wonder we have ethical issues.)
I love to hitchhike. Not because of the free ride. But for the
people I met along the way. When you stick your thumb out
and look at that car coming your way. You are asking them
to share their car, time, and space with you for an indefinite
term of time. It is a gamble for both sides. Is the other safe.

But what is essential to most people that pick up hitchhikers is
that they are:
1. Not afraid of life.
2. Willing to help another human being with absolutely no
benefit to themselves.
Other than maybe a good conversation.

So in my celebration of travelers I have met along the way.
I will celebrate and champion my friend John T.
A person I would call a friend, I met along the path.
He truly tries to make the world a better place.

Like the a pickup truck stopping along the highway to
pickup two kids making their way to a rock concert.
Just giving the kids a lift. or a helping hand.
These are travel friendships.

I stuck out my thumb for help,
John helped me along the way.

A random friendship and some kind words
is one reason I travel.
I think John T. does special things.

Maybe it will help you to...
Be a Hobo, and leave your mark.
