Sustainable Social Help

I am try to figure out the word - Sustainable - for years, reminds me of trying to figure out what my girlfriend in college kept requesting,
- Andy, be more sensitive -

I am not sure still what all this means, however I can still reach for clarity. I was on a bus with I believe two well-intended men. One older and one more the MTV younger.

Whatever the case we traveled in this little air-conditioned, too night for comfort van from the airport to Antigua for 10 Dollars U.S.A. about a one hour trip.
I was quizzing the younger one, about how he got a sailboat on the river Dulce, and he was saying or explaining how he cashed in before the Dot-Com crash, with some web site called Mongo something.

Then the older man on the bus, after I introduced myself and the younger man in the seat behind me as we was having this ongoing conversation and seem strange or bad mannered to not at least acknowledge him. So we did the introduction thingy.

They asked me what I do, I said, I have a travel web site, I gossip and make enough money to chase girls all over the planet.

The older guy was going to a 20 plus dollar hotel.
The older going to a 65-dollar hotel and to his 35-foot yacht on the river dulce.

The both suddenly commented,
- You speak very good Spanish -
I said,
- I am a five year old; I spent five years in South America -

The older gentleman is trying to help the Guatemala people with some project called - Central America Solar --- blah blah I am not sure. However, he was explaining about a food cooker that works with solar to cook food. I said,
- I saw a thing like that in Tibet -

He said,
- It cost 125 U.S.A. in parts, and then the people make the cooker - That is not a sustainble price to pay.

What the goal or thought here is to stop them from cooking over a wood fire and getting lung type problems, plus conserve the trees, wood, environment.

My guess in hard dollars this is close to two months worth of money. They have more than this in terms of food, and barter, probably closer to 300 Dollars; however, the world only cares about paper money, not what they have.

The idea is to give them a gift, help they can sustain, something that you give them and leave. This does not seem to be sustainable, maybe a great NGO keep a job for and NGO person.

I personally am wondering, can I go to Nepal, find the same thingy, send to other countries for 15 dollars?

Some Doctors have realized that in some countries they manufacture hearing aids, medical products for one hundred times cheaper than sold in the USA, they want me to stop in factories and talk with them. Maybe there is way to help get these needed products cheaply into the USA.

Disparity or differences in money or cost of labor are a windfall.

I personally believe people like Guatemala, therefore they like to come and help on many save the planet projects. I was considering how this would be good for Niger, where there are very few trees, lots of sun, the do need to conserver the trees. Here in Guatemala there are trees everywhere, and in Niger, there are very few.

People like propane.

I go to Nepal and India in the next few months, I am going to search for one of them hot water or solar cooking stoves. However, people like propane, however there are places where they do not distribute or sell propane.

I went on the locals bus in a way the next day, stayed in the cheaper hotel; try my best to learn to talk the languages. Nothing can be taught, learned, or understood until you somehow live with the people. Talk their language, try to learn.

Living in the expensive hotels keeps me father away from people, I must always remember to stay close to the people in the country I came to visit.

The world is in great shape, however there is energy of people that want to work to help with some problems on the planet. Somehow there must be a formula where the persons trying to help the people, can take a class, be told, explain to them, be very careful who you wan to help. Why do people believe everyone needs help, it is annoying that people do not see smiles. I saw miserable people in the Caribbean, go there, they need help.

There is a problem in Guatemala with Alcohol, there is a problem with theft, robbery and the rich abusing the poor. But I see some rich people with smiles on their faces, that say hello in an Indiana, down on the farm, hick, not sophisticated way.

Load Shading in Nepal

Load Shading in Nepal

The Electricity is shut off at pre-arranged times.

I like words, the Nepali people around me have been using the term - Load Shading. -

I sometimes feel stupid, yet I resort to thinking, I am too old, too experienced, too much water has gone over the bridge to think this, I do not understand the term.

What they mean is this, the shut the electricity completely for areas of the city at pre-arranged times. This means where I am living on Mondays and Wednesday between 5:00 and 7::30 PM there is no electricity and also on Friday morning, I think between 6:00 and 8:00 AM.

I am thinking about this, because it is Friday morning and there is no electricity in my room, I can work on my computer because it has a battery good for about 1-2 hours…. hehehe, the lights need to come on.

Biggest problem is I cannot make coffee with my one-cup coffer cooker.

So where did the word - Shading - come from, I can understand load, or the load on the electrical system. Yet, there is not in the shade or middle ground here in my room, it is an outage.

I looked up in my Encarta Encyclopedia on my computer, there is not load-shading, however, there is load shedding.

Load Shedding:
- temporary reduction in electricity supply: a temporary reduction in a supply of electricity as a method of reducing the demand. - (2)

Maybe my hotel is just spelling wrong, I looked up on the Internet and there are pages of Nepal and Load Shading, so not the only place.

I will go do the Wiki thing. I did not find Load Shading, yet I did discover the Load Shedding, however, even that goes on to be redirected to - Rolling blackout - on Load Shedding

My battery is getting weak, I need to conclude my thread of curious word following research.

There is probably a I will check.
Yep, there is:

There are hazards of following words of research, it is extremely easy for a the curious to get sidetracked. The page explaining about Dictionaries in the Wikipedia is fascinating.

No Load Shade, yet again there is load shedding.

Aaagh, low battery warning, 7:48, time to turn it on…

I think this is a what I call - India English - thing, the India people like many countries have their own version of English. I am finding this term mostly on India English pages. "Load Shading" Search

Militant Geography

Militant Geography
Kpalime, Togo West Africa

I just read an article by Joseph Conrad, the writer of the book Lord Jim.
“Geography and Some Explorers.” National Geographic, March 1924.

I would say this man has a grasp of
- How things work. -
I read this in the Encyclopedia Encarta on my computer.

I download the ebook Lord Jim from the site, and seems I should try attain all his work.

The Beverly Hillbillies Effect

The Beverly Hillbillies Effect
Bamako, Mali, West Africa
Monday, September 24, 2007

There is an intriguing phenomenon to observe on the planet, the best way I can explain is by calling it,
- The Beverly Hillbillies Effect -

When a person with who comes from a primitive background suddenly lives in a more developed world because of new found money, and become pompous yet still behaves as they was raised.

The Beverly Hillbillies was a television show in the USA about a family of Hillbillies from up in the hills somewhere who hit gold, black gold. The found oil on their land and became incredibly rich and because of this great wealth their friend told them to move to California, and go live in Beverly Hills, California, the place to go when New York is a Mercedes, and you want a Lamborghini.

The world is developing and changing at an every increasing speed, while the base lifestyle does not. You can take the man out of the country, but you cannot take the country out of the man.

I was having an ugly feeling laugh and a cringe this morning, there is a man in the Hotel, he is in the Air Conditioned room next to mine. He has a radio blaring away at 3:00 AM in the morning in French, I suppose he does not understand French and must hear it at high volumes to separate the words, or he is enamored by the sounds. Well, after a few obnoxious hours, he gets up, the door close, I hear him clear his throat and spit, I am positive I am putting on my sandals to walk to the shower.

Later, I decided to go and get a dipper of water to make some instant coffee, the radio has stopped, it is quiet, I am happy. I go take a peak out the front balcony to see what the day is bringing, it is now about 5:00 AM and everyone is out swearing allegiance. I see the man over by the bushes and I start to chuckle, I try not to be obvious, but here is a tall man in a leisure suit, typical here, quite nice actually, a grey, not the normal I pajama colors.

He is brushing his teeth over by the bushes!

Ok, this is happens, the normal person of West Africa is diligent about brushing their teeth. The normal way it to walk outside, hand around a bush or the gutter and spit the toothpaste in the bush. The Hotels in this area of the world often do not have sinks, mirrors, or any method to wash your hands, or brush your teeth. They have caught on to the idea that a shower is nice, but the idea of brushing your teeth inside the hotel room is still sort of a mystery. I love when a girl from the hills takes a shower under what we would call a normal shower; they become thrilled by the idea of running water.

Ok, this man just is clueless, he cannot hide behind that leisure suit, and he cannot pretend to be something. We have a very nice set of sinks, complete with mirrors and half the faucets work; these are less than 10 feet from his room.

The difficult part for me about The Beverly Hillbillies Effect is not his lack of understanding of the modern world. I do not see any reason why he needs to speak French, I do not care that he brushes his teeth over a bush; I do not like that he spits on the floor in front of my feet. The problem is the arrogance that comes with new money, when you give a Hillbillies new found wealth; they do not become loveable like the show the The Beverly Hillbillies, the opposite, a person with money believes they are someone special, and they demand you say they are special. I try my best to talk about football and escape. A normal person from the hills, living in the hills, accepting reality is ten time the aristocrat of a person who wants to be something they are not, you cannot remove the basic culture and lifestyle of a person and the last thing in life I want to listen to is a person pretending to be something they are not, it is like watching a lie in action.

I came from Indiana, I am a Hoosier, this is not sophisticated and that is ok today.
