Manila Airport No Mans Land 2009

Manila Airport No Mans Land 2009
I call the area after immigration and before I enter a country “No Mans Land.” It is the place where I am not legally in any country or at least I cannot say which country. Airports are cultural mashing pots, places where cultures are ground together and nobody is sure of the rules.

I try to empathize with an airport full of young Filipino men and women, why are they so anxious to leave their country. I cannot imagine becoming an Expat, an ex patriot who for some reason gives their allegiance to another country. I cannot imagine it for me an American and I cannot imagine it for Filipino people.

Tony Blair said something about you can judge a country by the number of people who are leaving or entering. I still think this comments is real wisdom. There is a denial of the world, somehow are supposed to overlook the obvious signs.

I am in many countries with big guns, big barbwire fences, truly mean looking security systems. Then people will say, the country is safe, then jump in with this is not really needed, but I say,
“When everyone has it, I have to believe it is needed.”

I met an United Nations World Food program person while here in the Airport. She was a fat and dumpy looking Australian girls, I am amazed at the ugly white women that come to the Philippines. We discussed the culture of the Philippines, I told her to read the book “Culture Shock Philippines.” As best I could figure out, she feels she already knows, truly the ugly of the world. Cloistered, living and associating with the rich of the country and looking down on poor in the Islamic areas she is feeding. I see she like the power, there is no “White Knight Syndrome” here of the female version.

Everyone always pretends they understand cultures, I continually tell myself learning about culture will never end. To me this is my dominating reason to travel, to learn how the rest of the world live, eat, play and work.

Retire in Philippines NO WAY

Retire in Philippines NO WAY
I believe Typhoon Lupit is causing problems here in Manila; the electricity went off around 2:00 am and came back on around 5:00 am. I only know this because the air conditioning in my room went off and water started dripping water onto my pillow. I guess the aircon was iced up.

I leave on a plane today, I have no good information about Typhoon Lupit and the truth is, I am not positive that is the name. I did a search on the internet and derived this name, there does not appears to be any Filipino television news stations in my Australian owned Hotel. I am lucky to have the internet, when the electricity went off, I would have neither television nor internet.

Sometimes I ask the Filipino people, and then know less than I know; my best option is to find a Foreign Expat for this type of information of course this does not work, it is now 5:59 am in the morning.

I have stayed all over the planet during raining seasons, however I have to admit the Philippines is over the edge with too much rain. I just do not need this much rain, it is a true problem. Baguio maybe one of the better places to retire in the Philippines has more than other places, so even worst. I enjoy one or two months in the Philippines, then I start to realize the underlying structure of the society and slowly become annoyed. A great place for one or two months, to adapt, accept, or go native here in the Philippines is not going to happen to me, I am not going to become Filipino.

I am so happy to leave, I go to the airport now and HOPE the planes are flying away from here.

Thailand Market Shrimp and Fuzzy Fruit

Thailand Market Shrimp and Fuzzy Fruit
I was forced to walk through a Thailand food market that was in front of the Panthip Computer store in Rangsit, Thailand yesterday.

Shrimp, Crabs and fuzzy fruit, it is always a colorful day when walking through the food markets in Thailand; you never know why the market is located where it is located, it is just there. Intriguing, however the smell can sometimes be annoying, as the smells are all in the same soup.

I truly love Shrimp Cocktail; however, I can never buy the cocktail sauce or the horseradish to make my own, and it just does not taste the same.

Large Thailand Shrimp, I suspect they are raised in the Shrimp farms close to the ocean here; I doubt it is natural Shrimp.

Crabs, I have never seen a crab farm, I do not know if they grow them in farms or not?

There are many types of strange vegetables and fruits for sale in Thailand, I always think the fuzzy ones are interesting.

Does Snow Cause Development of Nations

Does Snow Cause Development of Nations
I had not choice, I needed to go to work today, I woke up at 5:40 am, took a shower, and drove to Angola, Indiana. By 6:10 am, I had checked into the Coachlight Coffee shop and was downloading programs preparing my computer to leave the country.

It is an ordeal; life is harsh for a person who must wake up in freezing weather, put on many clothes and miserably miserable walks or drives to work.

Every day this week I drove to the Coachlight Coffee shop about 10 miles from my parent’s home in Orland, Indiana to use the city of Angola’s free high-speed WIFI Internet access.

I would say this type of behavior is rare in the warm and tropical places of the planet.

I often ponder the situation, I know in Africa they have what they call the “Resource Curse,” whereby they can grow food and survive so easily they lack motivation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource_curse

Iceland and Norway are considered by the Human Development Index to be the two highest developed countries of the planet.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index

It is as if the farther away from the equator, the higher the level of development.

It is as if the colder the country, the more difficult it is to live, the higher the development.

Generally, I have observed that higher developed countries consider themselves smarter than lower developed countries. They treat the people in these countries as if they are needy. I long ago realized they are truly rich in resources and time, they are lucky, they do live in a harsh place, and their life is easy. Just because a person is not motivated to fight against the planet does not mean they are stupid, it is not necessary, therefore they do not work.

It may be stupid though to leave the cold and harsh climates of the highly developed nations, go to the tropical climates, and work in the same manner.

What do I call a country that develops because of adversity?

“Adversity Curse?”
or
“Adversity Blessing?”

After 79 countries and about 11 years of perpetual travel, I am positive living in a highly developed country is not a blessing; I feel it to be a curse. The cost of development is seldom worth the stress, frustration and mental turmoil, yes, I get to live longer and have a car, I for sure work by the “sweat of my brow.”
http://bible.cc/genesis/3-19.htm

I have had a lot of trouble Blogging in the USA, there is not enough time to get it done… however, it is silly to think I have to Blog, yet I do.

It is a blessing or a curse to live in a highly developed country like the USA? I know you are brainwashed, but please refrain from repeating what you have been told all your life without introspection, repeating the saying of your culture is not a sign of development.

Travel to Ethiopia Preparation

Travel to Ethiopia Preparation

NOTE:
I know many of you do not believe in Guidebooks, I never can get my mind around this concept, somehow it means the theory is "the less information I have the better." And I believe even bad opinions have value, it is my job to suss out and find the value. The internet still sucks, incredibly slow, confused and disorgannized, I have zero desire to sit in internet cafes for days trying to find information on the next country or walk around for days looks for a hotel because I am lost.

I leave tomorrow night for Ethiopia; it is time to prepare, nothing like the last moment to create urgency. Ethiopia is at the edge of the no guidebook world, it is not a mainstream country for guidebooks, and I am expecting the Lonely Planet information to be out of date or one sided. The guidebook writers in the less traveled countries are not normally cheap budget travelers, normally NGO‘s, or Tourist with Backpacks driving cars and truly do not empathize with Backpackers. Then again, Backpacker do not normally travel to Africa, they stay closer to the party circuit.

Cover of the Lonely Planet I purchased, then download the PDF files for Ethiopia, it cost about 50 US for the book and the PDF files to Ethiopia to encompass possible countries for this trip.

I forgot to buy a Guidebook for Ethiopia from Amazon.com ahead of time, so I purchased the PDF download file. I have already purchase a hard paper copy of the Lonely Planet for the countries of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi; I have no idea where Ethiopia fits in, or where East starts, Central starts or ends. I do know that when you try to buy a Guidebook for Africa do not get too excited.

I swore off Lonely Planet for Africa and truly wanted the Roughguide; however, it appears that I went off the Roughguide path too far; they do not seem to provide comprehensive guides for this area.

NOTE: It is NOT truly possible to buy a guidebook for each country, the weight would be burdensome you need multiple country guides. However, I could buy PDF files, however they are difficult to read and annoying, I will print out chapters of my Ethiopia PDF files.

Here is a photo of what I recommend tourist and travelers carry when traveling. If you need a larger flashlight, torch or lantern you can purchase one and leave it when finished.

The one on the right I purchased in Wal-Mart for roughly two Dollars. The one on the left I purchased in Thailand, it cost about one US Dollar. .

I use this as a keychain, when I need light I squeeze it and the small LED light creates adequate light for most travel needs. I highly recommend this type of battery powered light, it truly is needed.

Examples:
- Find the location of the lock on your Hotel door.
- Walking home at night
- Reading a map while in transit
- A temporary light until you can purchase a larger one.
- When the electricity goes off, you have a light to find a candle or the door.

I was very happy to find this type of light in Wal-Mart here in the USA, whereby I can recommend it without the remorse of knowing it is would be difficult to buy.

Do you need this, ask a friend that had traveled overseas this question…
“Do the lights go off in other countries?”

Ignore Image of USA Overseas Travel Tip
Do the right thing, this is truly irrelevant.

A woman here asked me in the USA,
“How is the USA viewed overseas?”

This was a difficult question for me to answer simply.

She wanted to know how the world views the USA, and I was tempted to just answer with another question.
“Why is this important?”

If a person does not like you, are you going to change your way of living and behavior to make them like you?

To have the world like you or not like you is irrelevant; the only goal I need to focus on is being a good person and encourage other USA people to do be good people.

How does the world view the USA overseas?

I think they do not trust the USA people, they know they will change because of every opinion poll; they will change like the wind. I have learned I should not trust the USA; however, I trust other countries less. I know the majority of Americans overseas will lie in an attempt to be popular, they will go along or agree with insults to the USA.

The question was stupid to me; it was obvious the person deemed popularity more important than proper behavior. Once a person places popularity as the highest priority, honesty, integrity, ethics and true character is lost.

A few Americans will wear Canadian Flags; the majority of Americans like to appease other countries. There is a good reason to not trust Americans, they cannot be trusted. However, realize, the other countries will lie more, however they are looking at the USA to be the best example.

If she asked the questions,
“Does the world trust the USA?”

I could have answered,
“No.”

Why would they, the USA changes with every opinion poll, if the opinion poll says something is bad, the groupthink is to agree and increases the percentage as people have lost the ability to think, they just follow the tribe.

22 Years of Sobriety for Andy

Please, there is no reward needed when a person stops being a jerk, I do not need any attaboys, I am doing what many of you have always done, I am just a jerk in remission.

I have completed 22 years of sobriety, no drinking alcohol and no drugs, only a few Coca Leaves and too much coffee. My sobriety birthday is February 22nd and I am grateful to have my eyes opens and my brain working at full speed.

Travel Journal --- What is your travel problem?
I will write a Travel Tips with the solution
----------------------------------

Just this morning my mother reminded me I should go and talk with my sober friends. Why is this is important? Power can be given or taken from people in our lives, there are people who want to suck out our power and other who make us stronger.

Now, I may have a friend who gives me great power when the goal is to play basketball. While when I talk to this friend about not drinking he sucks out my power, he is not on board and is not supportive. My mother by reminding me was giving me some good Mojo, she was giving here power or support, I took here willpower and added it to mine and I am stronger. When I speak with other people who want to keep me sober they give me their power. I am not going to use the word friends, because I do have great friends who do not support me staying sober, however do support me on other issues.

I do not have the urge to drink, however if I did, I would surround myself with the group of friends who support me not drinking. Normally, these people do not drink and sort of feel it is silly to drink, so they annoy the people who drink.

If you want to stop drinking, you must keep the people who give you good energy to stop near you and avoid the ones who pull you down until you are strong enough to overpower them. I am the Alpha male, not easy for a person to have more power than I am, therefore I can go about anywhere.

The power is to believe in yourself when everyone around you is sucking energy is about focus, truly believing in yourself, knowing, or having the faith and confidence you are safe. I know I am a good person, I do my best in every next step, I make mistakes, I ask to be forgiven and I get on with my life. I do not stay around people who suck my energy, I find friends who are on the same path, who wish to make a good life. Some friends are sneaky, sometimes it just dawns on me some friends need to be tossed.

Life is good, when a reader or person tries to destroy my good feeling by making mean or non-constructive comments; I go into self-preservation mode. I know they are the enemy, they are not my friends, and they want to suck me down. I have to remind myself sometimes this is just a Travel Journal; it is not real life and just shut it off, the same as I remind them. If you do not become more powerful by reading my Blog, then for sure, STOP READING it.

To be the devils advocate is a great thing, sometimes people need jolted to think, they need well-intended jolts, not mean spirited jolts. I want you to think, I want everyone to have the power to make a decision without needing to agree with anyone, make the decision only because it the correct decision, nothing else.

Staying sober is easy once you learn how to collect the power and energy of supportive friends, but more important, do not play games, people who destroy your dreams and ambitions are the enemy. I mean this, you cannot just say to yourself, they are not my friends, they are soul sucking, they are causing the problem with the world. They are not trying to make the world a better place, they want to cause you harm.

I know the Ten Commandants; however, there are couple of sins that are not listed as clearly. The sin I am talking about is when a person who is not involved, tries to make two people to argue. To cause disharmony between two people is evil. For example, if a child would cause his parents to argue, this is evil. If an employee causes his boss and another employee to argue this is not a good person, you need to avoid him or her.

There are people who want me to argue with myself, to become unsure or myself, to become weaker. Truly an evil situation, better to avoid and look for a person who makes you think outside the box, not one who is trying to destroy the box.

Life is Good, I will smile more today than I will frown, and if someone is next to me, my job is to make them smile, it not to go down the tubes with them.

Sit around and feel the good energy of the world, avoid the bad and try to be a good person. Strangely, this is huge problem for most people, they have some truly horrendous thoughts, I am lucky, I enjoy just doing the right thing, and there is truly a great reward by being a good person today, tomorrow and forever. All this talk about God, bad Gods, this is all somewhat confusing, just do the right thing, you know when you are doing bad, stop it, and that little angel on your shoulder will agree. When you do badly, you are listening to that little devil on your shower. Allow the good Angel to win the arguments, do not sit around arguing what is the right thing, and I know you know already. Then go out today, put one step in front of the other and avoid those people who do not make you stronger, then life is truly simple.

Henry David Theroux was asked if he was at peace with God when he was about ready to die, and he said,
"I never knew us to argue..."
