I Turned 54 Years Old Yesterday

I Turned 54 Years Old Yesterday
I wish to thank all my friends for sending Happy Birthday wishes. I try my best to avoid getting older, then yesterday was my Birthday. What can I do, I had all these well-intended people are writing, calling, posting on my Facebook.com wall,
“Happy Birthday.”

I just do not understand. Is it polite to remind somebody they are getting older? Hard to be in denial when everyone around you refuses to be good enablers, I thought my friends were more dysfunctional than this.

I think I can use this age thing to my benefit… Ok, thanks everyone, I am too old and tired to reply to all your Birthday wishes, I will do it in this post.

Thank You

I again have to admit,
“Everyone my age is older than me.”

I heard a good answer to the eternal question,
“Why are you not married?”
“Just lucky I guess.”

Vote to Send Andy October 2009

Vote to Send Andy October 2009
Wow, I am tempted to steer readers on how to vote, I guess my true feelings come out when I allow readers to tell me what to do. Maybe a month ago we set up this vote to send Andy to next country. This system allows readers to vote and by popular vote decide where I go next.

I need to close the first vote soon, then live up to my commitment.

Today is October 25,2009.
Vote now or lose your vote, I will close the vote in the next 3-5 days. Vote on Next Country for Andy

I am in danger of becoming a “but-head,”
“I will go here, but…”
“I will do this but…”
“I am going here, but I will stop in this country on the way.”

I am working up some small rules, I truly do not like rules, and somehow we all like to break rules. Here is a page where I am working on the rules to subsequent polls. This is not going to end, I am planning on allow readers to continue to vote for my next country. Boy Genius has now set up a way for me to close the poll, but what do readers do, do they change their votes, and add addendums to their comments.

It will be fun, confusing and just like travel, chaos on a stick.

Traveling With the Ugly American

Traveling With the Ugly American
I finally got to meet my constant travel partner, “The Ugly American Movie.” this movie has been my constant shadow now for 11-12 years.

This movie with Marlon Brando made in 1963 defined a stereotypical American called the “Ugly American.” The label is what scares many a good American into wearing Canadian Flags, and denying they are American. These people believe the USA is hated by the other countries of the planet.

The Ugly American Stereotype
More or less the essence of being the Ugly American is similar to making a student bored in class. When a person comes across as the authority, the teacher and treats others a a pupil, telling them what they need to know, they are being the stereotype. The student can become bored and starts to mock the teacher, whereby soon Europeans will use mockery to belittle you into submission.

1. Talking loud.
2. Not listening, if you find yourself the only one talking…
3. Too confident
4. Believing you are a teacher and other countries are the pupils.
5. Expecting other countries to be grateful to the USA.
6. Indifference

The book and the movie defined and validated a stereotype that has empowered a generation of people to openly criticize Americans. I find is a little humorous, when you are listening to a European person tell you who American are, they representing the same stereotype they want to belittle. This stereotype is used by Europeans and other Americans against you, seldom used by other areas of the planet.

Solutions
First any person who wishes to directly insult your country is not your friend, politely excuse yourself and go find a better class of person to spend your time. When a person takes a preconceived stereotype and tries to enforce you to defend it is a no-win situation a form of cultural bigotry.

1. Never apologize, this just empowers the abuser.
2. Learn a language
3. Study Geography
4. Read the book and watch the movie.
5. Honest
6. Do not talk directly at a person.
7. Back down in arguments, and stop talking.
8. Never give advice unless asked, it is not wanted.

We can change our pants, we cannot change people, please do not try to save or change the world, people save themselves.

In this scene, the man is screaming that he is not a pupil and the American cannot tell him what to do.

When the USA tells another country what they must do…
When a person tell another person what they must do…
The byproduct is anger.

I recommend you buy the book and the movie “The Ugly American” if you are going to live or travel overseas for long periods of time. You will also realize how the book and movie theme have been twisted. In the book, the man is actually a very ugly man who helps the locals.

Well, that is not true, I may click on it sometimes, however truly try to avoid reading them. I also avoid FaceBook.com and Twitter and a growing number of Social Networks I have joined.

I am proud to say, I have been using the same Yahoo Email now for about eight years. I have a file on my computer with all the emails I have received for about eight years.

Now, with the invention of Social Networks, I must check Facebook, Twitter, and a few more I am not going to tell you about.

I agree with the French guy I met in the Philippines who said,
“Communications is destroying communication.”

Mating Takes Precedence Over Travel

Mating Takes Precedence Over Travel
I have humorously and with a chuckle observed the desire to mate has a higher priority to people than travel. The number one reason I hear from people on why they cannot travel is
“I have a family.”
I say,
“Great, there is no good reason to travel perpetually; it is a highly inconvenient lifestyle.”

However, the other day realized two traveler friends of this site are now dealing with the mating issue.

First - Craig at TravelVice.com made a baby.
Second - Wade at VagabondJourney.com made a baby.

Hmm, what’s up with this? Why?

Marriage, family, babies and NOT sleeping alone all seems like the best option for humanity.

I spent about three months in the Philippines, in this time I was happy to see that men would rather get married or find a mate than to be a butterfly. The desire to establish a monogamous relationship is stronger than all the other options, even when men were able to have many women, they chose to have one.

This is a good sign for humans, it give me hope.

People ask,
“When will you stop traveling Andy?”
I say,
“I believe one day I will not be able to leave a woman, which is when I will stop.”

Do Not Read About Countries Travel Tip

Do Not Read About Countries Travel Tip
A reader commented,
“I suggest you read about the countries you travel through, including the histories of them, before you make the quick judgements you have made on this post.”
Tanzania Bus Trip - Border to Kahama

I truly believe the worst thing a person can do is read about a country before they visit. If you want to truly distort your perceptions, confuse yourself and interpret the culture incorrectly read and study the culture before you enter.

“If you do, you will surely find what you read.”

---------------------------------

When you read about a country, you have a checklist in your mind, and your trip becomes a study in affirming or denying what another writer told you. Facts are different from opinions, I often read factual data about the country, and I will open my Encarta Encyclopedia and read. Or when I have an internet connection, I get on Wikipedia.org.

I do NOT sit around reading Guidebooks; I am a human with a mind, capable of making my own decisions.

There are some obvious holes in this proposition, for example if you go visit a specific historical site, it may better to read about it because the local guides often cannot read… hehehe

However, if you want to know,
“Is the country happy?”
“Do people have jobs?”

Then you need to learn how to observe, there is huge lag between the real world and what writers wrote. For Example, I was in Rwanda, it is one of the more modern countries I have traveled in, and this contradicts the perceptions of people. They read about the Genocide and this country may never be able to escape from this pre-conceived stereotype.

What do they call this, a “Conundrum?”

How can you read a cliché, stereotypical opinionated explanation of a country then allow a country to change? I place dates in all my post, I finally realized opinions of countries are time sensitive, the world is changing so fast, what was real yesterday, may not be today.

So read an opinion of some writer who wrote a piece 10 years ago, then his or her well written opinion has been repeated or “Churnalized” around the planet until it people believe it a fact. They then place it in a guidebook and readers go find it is true, even thought is not..

Readers do not want me to write bad opinions about countries, for the most part this is because they have been trained to read only hogwash Travel Writing, and they expect a format. People who live in countries want to keep their dirty laundry hidden.

I do hope you realize, I write about countries, and readers read it before they go to countries. I know this is a puzzle, I hope to be writing for people who never are planning to visit the country. Moreover, I hope people who live in the country do not read.

Fun stuff and truly a confusing proposition when you proceed to study a country. If readers someday become adult, they will realize what I write or anyone writes is opinions, it is their responsibility in life to own their own opinions, not depend on others to make up their minds.

I carry a guidebook, I read tons of information about countries, but not until I have been in the country a couple of weeks.
