I am sitting in an Internet Cafe in Bangkok and this German girl has these wondeful photos from Australia of fish. I snaggeed one or asked her for one to put up.
EXMOUTH WESTERN AUSTRAILIA
I meet a lot of faceless people in Thailand, and this some days is difficult. I was walking from the Sawasdee Welcome Guesthouse to the Peachy to use the internet and along the road walk a boy maybe 22, maybe 23 he is locking down, around and up and sideways, but when I get close he give me a nod hello. It is obvious he comes from a place like Indiana where we feel a responsibility to be friendly to other people, especially when encountering a person or face on a deserted alley. I am grateful I came from a place where I have a face and a name and the people I meet have a face and name.
I went to the Hewlett Packard or Compaq place to report my computer as being broken, and I guess I get tired of pushing people to be or do their jobs. In the end the man or manager after they said no about 20 times did help me and did a good job, but I am sad that I had to over ride his no 20 times to get a yes, and service. I do not think he is unusual he just did not want to have a face until I forced him to be human and have a face, but I feel sad to know that I can be so forceful to a person I do not know, and that I have to be this way.
But on the other hand the older lady at the Peachy that runs the internet cafe recognizes me now, and I have a face, and she smiles. She is maybe 60 years old and her and her husband treat me great, as they see me as a regular. A person with a face, and I cannot understand why people have no face?
PLUG AND PLAY ONLY 30 PERCENT OF TIME
I can only use my new USB Flash Memory about 30 percent of the time in the internet cafe without downloading driver and all sorts of small stuff. In a perfect world with the newest window and not on a LAN yes.
Cambodia and Thailand are having huge water fight, as I am back in Bangkok I am trying to keep dry as you cannot walk anywhere without having Thai kids shooting or dumping water on you. Very difficult to return home today with my computer from Pantip because of the danger of getting it soaked. The taxi driver was extremely stupid and turned down the Khao San area and did not take me to my hotel, I finally got out of the car and did not pay him, he called the police over and since I knew I was right the police did the normal corrupt thing and tried to get me to pay him. I ended up making him lose face (Yes! ) and only paying him half, but I should have tried to pay the police off, it would have made the normal stupid situation even funnier and stupider, but same same and normal.
So we are involved in a big water fight in the streets, no one is working.
SERIOUS EXPLANATIONS OF THE HOLIDAY, BUT I HAVE NOT SEEN IT
Songkran is a Thai traditional New Year which starts on April 13 every year and lasts for 3 days. Songkran festival on April 13 is Maha Songkran Day or the day to mark the end of the old year, April 14 is Wan Nao which is the day after and April 15 is Wan Thaloeng Sok which the New Year begins. At this time, people from the rural areas who are working in the city usually return home to celebrate the festival. Thus, when the time come, Bangkok temporarily turns into a deserted city.
Yesterday I was in Siem Reap, Cambodia or maybe they say Cambodge but never the less I have left Cambodia and I am not in Bangkok.
I received an email and then called a friend that wants me to return to the USA to work for one week or at most 14 days. I am going to purchase the Greyhound ticket today so I can guarantee that I end up in Europe in the Spring, one week grows to easily.
I may stop in New York City to see the about the situation at the World Trade Towers, plus a few photos of Boston.
I subscribe to this, they are a little complicated to subscribe to but for all countries of the world this is a good way to know the big picture political problems or you can be an ostrich.
The link that will probably always be good!
Hehehe - not that links break.
Internet cost 1 Baht per minute.
30 Baht for an hour, or discount for using an hour.
After 1 hour then you pay 1 Baht per minute.
The 30 Baht reverts to the 60 Baht per hour rate.
What this does is wacks you if you do not pay attention to the time exactly.
The 1/2 Baht rate would carry on in South America or Central American and they would even maybe keep reducing the rate to keep you using the machine, but here I just leave.
But there is a reason for this madness, it will guarantee this country stays a cheap place to travel.
Thank you Thailand! With that business sense I can always return with the insurance they never really get it together.
I think I have just claimed independence day from my Laptop!
I purchased 2 Flash Memory Thumb or USB Slot Memory chips that becomes an Extra Drive or an E Drive on my computer. Cost as 500 Baht each or about 13 Dollars U.S.
I am going save all my new work on the chip, then back up the information on the hard drive, walk into an Internet Caf้ and publish all the information. If my computer crashes, then who cares, because I can still continue to work and all the information is backed up both on the Internet and on my laptop hard drive. The critical information is on the Flash memory USB drive.
This is a perfect world for me, but I think crazy for the average person in a way. Most people want to back up a half a Gig of Photos or Music or crazy stuff, or run a program like Eudora or Outlook or things like that. I have 3 program I use and each are less than 2 Megs. I use FrontPage a lot, but the new pages never exceed more than about 10 megs in a week, but I have small photos.
I can run my email program, FTP, Save all my new WebPages on the card ready to publish. I am positive I can walk into an internet cafe put this plug and play thumb drive in the computer and I can publish my information in minutes or as fast as I would have on my own computer. There is NO reason to connect with my computer except for virus updates, and for windows updates. I may be able to update Macafee, I am pretty sure without connecting, I am not sure about Norton.
