Thailand Tourist Industry 2008
My mother wrote me about Thailand,

“There is a lot in the paper and on the TV periodically about them. 10 years ago, it would have made me worry about you but now I know you understand how to take all precautions to be safe.
Love prayers Mom Dad”

I am on the outside of the USA looking, my Mother and the Father are on the inside looking out, this truly demonstrates to me the global problems of understanding other countries.

I have been talking on the Skype.com telephone to many people; I have asked my Mother and Father many questions about the economy of the USA. So far, and remember I am on the outside looking in, I do not know the real situation in the USA, just interpretations from friends and family. However, I think Thailand is in better shape than the USA in many ways.

The economic problems of the world are an industrial countries problem, more than the developing countries. I feel it the countries where the majority of people work in Factories are going to have problems, while the agrarian countries will have less problems.

“Subsistence Farming is 100 percent employment.”

A Thai friend of mine is being hurt by this economic situation, given a tax break if she invested in “Stock Market” related investments for the long term, she has lost about 20 percent of the value. The governments of the world encourage normal people, not ready for prime time investments in ways that make it possible for them to lose their principal.

My Mother is talking about the Protesters, the Cambodian border dispute and other problems in the countries. It is incredibly difficult to explain to people that these types of problems are opt in problems. The vast majority of people involved in these problems are people who opted to being involved, it is incredibly easy to avoid them, and in fact, it is difficult to find them.

I do not need to take precautions to be safe in Thailand, I would have to go hunt for the problems to find a problem here in Thailand. As normal, the people in life who have the most problems are the people who volunteered for the problems.

When I think about the economic problems of the world, I do not think about returning to the USA, I think about avoiding it until this is over, staying safe and sound in under-developed countries.

American Flag on Thai Girl

American Flag on Thai Girl
I took these two photos of a Thai Girl with an America Flag on her shirt.

These two Thailand girls were enjoying the morning; I walked by and spied the American Flag, and asked if I could take a Photo.

I like the American Flag; I think the colors are good. I saw about the same shirt on another girl from maybe Poland or some Eastern Europe country the other day.

It is curious in Asia, I almost never see an USA citizen wearing a Flag on their shirt, unlike in the Caribbean or Mexico where they seem to propagate. I would stereotype the Americans in Asia as being normally the type that do not love the USA, and would do about anything to leave, which seems to be a good idea.

I postulate that sometimes the reason the Europeans get so angry at the USA is because they are de facto Americans. They truly have no allegiance to their own country and feel like they should complain about their real country.

I remember in Pai, Thailand listening to a German man say,
“Yes, this would happen in Germany, however I expect more from the USA.” He said this with no bad intentions; he truly felt the USA should live up to better standards. I agree and do expect the USA to be a better place than the rest of the country.

I would hope this Thailand girl with he USA flag on her shirt, drinking a couple of beers in the morning would be happy to be in the USA when she arrives… hehehe

I think every person should be in love with their country, it is where they live, it is the path of least resistance. And on the other hand, I should always strive to love the country I am in because that is also good advice. Travel Agents must love people who are unhappy with their country, they know they will buy plane tickets.

One Too Many Crazy

One Too Many Crazy
I had another person write to tell me all the reasons they are not going to read my Blog. I think they desire to change me, some folks eventually learn I have no desire to change.

It is an intriguing when a reader wishes me to change and write the way they wish me to write. This is codependency in a way, maybe they need a shrink.

I have been thinking a lot about the word “Rant,” I think sometimes about changing the name of the Blog. I like the word Rant, to replace the word Travel, and maybe “Free Prose” can replace the word Blog. Maybe the word Hobo can be replaced by “Rambling Man.

What is a day, with out putting a few juicy labels on someone?

My Travel Friend Jeff

My Travel Friend Jeff
I have a friend I met in Oaxaca, Mexico in a Hostel; we have been friends now for about 10 years. In this time, he has studied and became a Doctor and is now in residency in the USA.
We are planning some trips together in the future. We were together for a month or two in India, Nepal, Tibet, China and Tibet before I had to separate because I could not get an acceptable Russian Visa and he went on into Russia.

It was great to talk with Jeff, I have good memories when I think of him, friends are difficult to find and easy to misplace, I have never been able to find a formula that I can use that would help find the good friends. In the end, some serendipitous rules govern the finding of long-term friends.

Skype.com is my newfound links to rebuild old friendships that have been put too far back on the shelf for too long.

Travel is harmful to friendships, some of my friends have just written me out of their lives. Nothing happened, however some friends feel a friendship requires we talk in person. I do not worry much about this type of friend, there is some strange value system working and not important, more of a dysfuntionally hooked together friendship.

Old friends like Jeff are easy, the moment we start talking we have rekindled the fire and the friendship is good.

He will soon be ready for some Adventure Travel, we want to ride horse from Costa Rica north across a few Countries. There is a Malnutrition trip in Niger, West Africa we wish to do, and the Congo. (Note, I define Adventure Travel when the possibility of getting killed exist.)

I was prodding him trying to get him to come to the Un-contacted tribe’s area near Pucallpa, Peru this year in January; however, his Doctor residency is right now an issue.

I am reluctant to do a few trips alone, these trips are dangerous. Like in the Movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, there are times when a partner in crime is better.

There is something mysterious about Africa and travelers, I know few travelers who want to go to Africa, somehow Asia or South America is the end of road. I need to return to Africa, it is like an addiction, I need to return to get a fix. Whatever the case, I will soon be in Guatemala and down in Pucallpa, Peru nosing around.

I was going to Oceania; I have decided the place is too expensive for this year of my life.

6 Videos on How to Fit a Backpack

6 Videos on How to Fit a Backpack
I am going to do some Travel Bag Research in the near future, I discovered I needed to know how to fit a backpack, so I to start my reseach I collected 7 Videos on how to fit a backpack.

Please understand they are showing you how to go hiking or trekking in the mountains and this is really a different use for a bag than travel. To illustrate a point in the future I need to be able to compare a Hiking Backpack versus a Professional Travel Bag.

I am a Professional Traveler.

The videos more or less separate into two aspects, of how to fit a backpack, the first is how to measure Torso so you can choose the proper harness and the second aspect is how to adjust.

What I notice, they used pretty much good body shapes, and did not really address fat, stumpy, or extremely tall people. There was no discussion of clothing, although the Sierra Trading Post guy did briefly talk about hot spots. The clothing under the pack can great affect the comfort, if a belt buckle is right below the hip harness it can eat into your skin, and so can elastic.

Again, this information should be learned, however Traveling the planet is dynamic in nature, the obstacle you encounter by planes, trains, buses, taxis and the dusty road are different. Hiking is more or less one theme, while a true traveler carries various type of load according to the country and how they wish to travel.

I will say Europe is the most exercise and if you are going to get a Hiking Bag then take it to Europe, however my recommendation is to buy a two wheel cart.

Fitting is important, however choosing the proper size bag is 10 times more important for a traveler. The last thing I ever want to see is a traveler carrying two plastic bags and their pack. This is a failure of the gear shop to sell the proper bag to the person when this happens, they did not qualify the persons needs and uses of the bag.

Orchestration of Backpack Parts

Orchestration of Backpack Parts
I just got off a Skype.com Telephone call to the USA. I am arranging to buy Zipper Sliders, Chain and other plastic hardware in sufficient quantity to make 100-300 Professional Traveler Bags.

The minimum time I could even anticipate having all the materials collected in one location is three months. I have been taking telephone trips around the planet searching for these component products of a Traveler Bag.

As best I can say, I will have all the fabric, plastic hardware, zipper chain and slider and other exotic items shipped to my parent’s house in Indiana. Once I am comfortable, the majority of items are in one location I will travel to the USA, collect the items and personally carry them to Guatemala as best I can say now.

Prior to this, I hope to find some special sewing machines in Guatemala and other rivet machines. If I am not able to find these machines in Guatemala, I will somehow buy outside the country and have them shipped into the country, however I anticipate there shall be no problems on these machines, they should be sold in Guatemala.

Somewhere along the line, I will need to rent a storage unit in a city that I choose to fabricate the backpacks.

While all this is going on, I have to create a section on HoboTraveler.com to sell the Professional Traveler Bags, it shall remain completely hidden, sitting in wait for products to sell. This is called a shopping cart page, or catalog page in my view.

I will make maybe 100 bags and while in process I will open up the online store hoping to learn how to gauge the demand. Because if there is a huge demand, I will need to order the components immediately and wait again for more components to arrive. The goal of course is to never run out of product, whereby anyone would have to wait for his or her Professional Travel Bag.

I have put tons of energy and time into this project, it is fun, however a test of my fortitude and diligence. I have realized it is easy to make an average bag, it become a test of will power to make the best possible bag possible.

Finding the proper vendors has taxed my mind, never before I have search so incessantly for products.

I am happy I have finally given up on the idea of using an existing bag factory. I am happy to finally accept that 99 percent of the bag factories are in the business of turning out mass quantities of marketable bags, not in the business of making ideal bags. This realization is sad in my mind, it took me a long time to accept that the companies were only in the business of selling products, there primary focus was not on optimal design for function, more they were are interested in bags that require very little equipment and are sexy looking even if they do not work.

I speculate and would proposition the reason why many Backpack Companies moved away from the external frame backpack to the internal frame backpack had nothing to do with quality. Rather they factories needed less machinery to make an internal frame backpack. Truly, the majority of backpacks can be made with just an average sewing machine, no special equipment is needed.

Khao San Road Vegetable Fruit Market

Khao San Road Vegetable Fruit Market
There is morning Vegetable and Fruit Market just off Khao San Road in Bangkok, Thailand. I would wager the mass of Vegetarians on Khao San Road are too hung over to see this Food Market. It starts at sunrise and ends just after 8, maybe towards 9 am.

I wonder when mornings became unfashionable, really a BIG mistake.

This is the road by the name of Kraisi, if you walked off Khao San Road towards the Wat you would turn right and go two city blocks, then the only problem is to wake up.

Here at this market from sunrise to about 7:30 you will see many Buddhist Monks collecting Alms.

Papaya

I never have figured out what this is, I think some form of Thailand Breakfast, ready to go meal.

Darwin Did Not Explain How to Quit

Darwin Did Not Explain How to Quit
I 100 percent believe in the concept of “Survival of the Fittest,”
Or “Natural Selection.”

I wish he would have explained to the world how to say,
“I quit,”
“I do not want to be involved.”

If someone or Darwin has explained how you opt out of this game of life, how you cannot compete, then I will listen. However, until further notice I believe we should all strive to be the best we can be.
