Leticia Colombia Memories

Leticia Colombia Memories
I have a daily unique travel experience, and I suspect very few people get to see this snapshot of travel.

People from all over the planet submit internet pages to HoboTraveler.com or HoboHideOut.com. Last night while I slept here in Bangkok, Thailand a Hostel in Leticia, Colombia was busy uploading photos and adding information the HoboHideOut.com site.

I spent maybe three days in Leticia, Colombia before taking the next boat up the Amazon River to Iquitos, Peru so I have fond memories of Leticia, Colombia.

This may just be business crap to some, but to me this is real life. I was in Leticia with a few other Travelers. Pascal from Belgium, an Ecuador guy with no money and Malaria, a Swiss guy that has is backpack robbed, and some Japanese girl who looked like Olive Oil from the Cartoon, Popeye the Sailor.

There are waves of travel information that flows into my email box daily, most of it annoying spammers, however every day or two one comes in that is truly a memory or excellent obscure Travel information.

This extremely, I mean outrageously good page was submitted to the Architecture pages of HoboTraveler.com, and I so excited I wrote the person to thank him.

The work and research on this page about Oriental Architecture needs a stand up and applaud, a lot of claps, standing ovations, a few Thailand Y’s and a Japanese bow.

I live in and with these memories, maps, dreams, and some anticipation of the next adventure just over the next mountain or as the plane hits down on the tarmac and I start to wiggle in my seat.

A funky map from 2002 when I was on the River Napa coming from Coca Ecuador to Iqutios Peru.

Siam Smile

Siam Smile
A Thailand girl says to me,
- I do not want to work in Bangkok, because they have Siam Smile. -

They pretend they care, they do not smile from their heart, they just smile.

I had this Siam Smile conversation after I asked a hotel receptionist a quesiton. I was not confident in the answer, and felt maybe it was a Thai Lie.

She said,
- A Siam Smile. -

All this was explained to me by a Thailand person.

Giving Back

Giving Back

Andy,
I have a philosophical point for you.

I have long been sickened by the phrase “Giving back” and was not entirely sure why.

Finally, I have come to the following conclusion:

1. In a free economy, you only get great wealth by doing something more productively than others or perhaps by supplying something that no one else has (Bill Gates and his operating software).

2. Thus, the productive person already is “giving” to the world in ways that others are not or have not.

3. Thus, they were not “given” what they accumulate. They earned it. As such, they cannot “give back”.

I suppose that, some would take exception. They would say that the high performing high wealth person was given a start by the society in some way. Perhaps through education or the legal system protecting property rights. While I would agree that this is true, I would also say that the high wealth person, in our society, has generally paid a huge amount of taxes and has employed many others that pay taxes on their way to becoming truly wealthy. Thus, to the extent that any “debt” for this foundation existed in the beginning, it is more than paid off by the time wealth is achieved.

Thus, no self made wealthy person can “give back” because they have been “given” little or nothing by society. The wealthy person can “give”, but that is altruism, and their decision to do so should not be reduced by the implication that what they are giving is owed. It is not.

Gary

Very good Gary,

I believe to tell a person to give back is a form of "Guilt Extortion" or using "Middle Class Guilt" to beg money from people.

When I hear the words "Giving Back," I look at the NGO organization or person as a beggar, or the beggar working in stead of the true need. I however refuse to ever give money because if I feel an pains of guilt.

I will give if I see a need, but to give because of guilt is an indication of some problem in my soul.

Spending money is giving back, and stops a recession, somewhere in this mix, I believe a person must look to who is asking and propose the question,
"Is this person or organization a TAKER?"

Gary is a friend of mine, and writes clear, or I would say more clear than me.

Air Conditioning Sickness

Air Conditioning Sickness
I am stuff up, I have a headache, I think I have isolated why I feel grumpy and not happy.

I have air conditioning sickness, and the truth is, I do not even know what that is… maybe a fungus in AC.

I was talking about this before, however I need to raise this air conditioning problem to a major concern for a long-term travelers like me. Dirty water, dirty sheets, dust mites in the bed, stains on the pillows, there is tons of junk in the air, I am not in Kansas.

I need to make and executive Hobo decision, I have to options:

1. New Hotels with New Air Conditioning.
- Less than 2-3 year old Hotels, and not smoking if possible, as I am not a smoker.

2. Cheap Fan room, with good fans and big windows.

The best choice I the Cheap Fan room, the value of the room is always there, the sense of being treated fair, getting the value for my buck is good. (I want know Monkeys on my back.)

I have stayed in about five separate rooms in the last few weeks all with Air Conditioning, I only felt good when the Air Conditioners were obviously new. I changed room in the present hotel, and even though the room does not have bedbugs, I now have Air Conditioning headaches. These types of underlying feelings are difficult to understand and get in touch with, they are not obvious problems, and for sure, I can ignore all sorts of pains.

I am happy to solve this travel riddle, because until I isolate travel problems, there is no way to solve. I will move into a different hotel today if possible. The smoking and air conditioning problem is too great here.

Who Are These Crazies

Who Are These Crazies
I read what I feel to be an accurate post about the people on

Digg
Facebook

I admit I know almost nothing about these two sites; I have never been on the Facebook site. I was on Digg, but just do not get it, seem full of people I do not want to know.

Funny, I think he is American and talks as if he was European.

Who are all these crazy people who get on these links, I put the Digg link on the bottom, just thinking it was harmless fun. I am slowly removing all these bookmarks, links, and other junk sites. Now, I have to get Digg removed, I really should trust my instincts, if I think it is junk, remember to tell myself, yes Digg is junk, do not think the majority has a brain.

I wish to enjoy my life, and my life is good. I do not want to suffer fools who get on these likes of Facebook, Digg or the numerous never-ending new fashion, look at me, I am a loser sites.

I put up a serious video about an expat life on YouTube.com, and again it was rejected for being too long. I think what they are saying, we only allow something so stupid a person who watches the reality shows would watch it. I guess now, I just use YouTube.com to put up videos when easy and when truly a good video, I put up a trailer and send to my site.

I still am cringing remember about my experience with Survivor Thailand. I bit it hook, line, and sinker. I thought this was a show about real Survival, and went to Pak Bara, Thailand or Koh Tarotao. Then slowly I realized this is just too stupid to believe TV, nothing real about it.

Thailand Twice as Modern at One Third the Price

Thailand Twice as Modern at One Third the Price
I took a taxi from the Ermita area of Manila, Philippines to the Airport, flew to Bangkok, Thailand and then took a taxi to Khao San Road.

I always leave the Philippines bewildered, as if I step in a cow patty and need to go clean my shoes. India is like jumping face first into the slurry near the silage area that feeds the cows before being milked.

Whatever... I need a shower.

Craig from TravelVice.com was complaining about the security of the Philippines Airport, therefore this time I noticed, there is a plenty. I appreciate security and thought this comment was a little off. (It is amazing how I can ignore bad things.)

I think if he got in touch with his true complaint, he would maybe realized, or I suggest his real problem was not security. It was just how stupid the Philippines people and government can be when you have to wait in lines. They take the airport check into to a paramount example of stupid check in and security. If they could do it stupid, they do it stupid, and Philippines airlines need purchased by Cebu Pacific, both times the plane have been empty and Cebu is full.

Thailand new check-in is great, baggage retrieval is painless. Finding taxis is corrupt; I have needed to go up three flights every time to find an honest taxi at the departure area.

Flying along the Thailand expressway at about 100 Kilometer per hour, the air conditioning working great, in the wonderful Thailand taxis, I thought about the too stupid for words taxi drivers of Manila. The first one wanted 30 extra pesos, and I got out because I did not think he knew what the word Airport meant, the other took me to the wrong airport, even though I keep saying International Philippines airlines. I knew I was in trouble when he said,
- Naiea -

I do not know how to spell, but I saw the Airport sign that said Departures and the Tagalog word Naiae was their. I said,
- Yes, Naiea. -

The Philippines speak English, at a second grade level.

I love the Philippines, however I have learned, do not say you love it Andy, you are good at ignoring the cow patties you walk in, and I just look for the good. My friend get very angry when they go to place I love, and find all the crap I ignore, not seeing the good.

Nevertheless, trust me, I do see the cow patties, and I also see the playful people of the Philippines, and I am still looking for the adults.

Any way I do it, Thailand is extremely modern compared to the Philippines and at one-third the price.

The USA can suck also, the land of rules and people who think working 24 hours per day is normal. The live to work, not work to live, in the end, I like to make enough money to live anywhere I want, for a short time until they annoy me.

Time to go to Africa and get annoyed,

One, if I wanted to get a per diem tax expense break in the USA, I would need to know what city I was in, since this is my diary, just seems to be a good reason.

Two, I want a clean separation in blog archives if possible for readers who want to read Togo, but not Ghana post.

Three, it is a travelogue and anyone coming in mid-stream want to know what river I am in, and I try my best to give signals.

I start with, 2008, so it sorts to top of column in database.

The problem of midstream readers is intriguing, because the rills turned into streams and now is a long river of thoughts. How to explain ten, maybe eleven years of travel in easy to understand terms, it is a life, not an event.

Where is Africa

- I miss Africa. -

My friend said on the Island of Hawaii she had,
- Island Fever -
Something like being trapped in a small room. I have never heard of Island Fever. I do worry about deserted Island. Being alone on a deserted island or beach is not paradise; you really can end up talking to Soccer balls like Tom Hanks in the movie Cast Away.

I think I got
- Tourist Bubble Fever. -

I am surrounded by Tourist, I put my hand up against the soapy, spongy side of the bubble, and I just cannot pop this bubble. Sometime there is a need to escape, and presently the only uncharted islands I know are in Africa.

I think I am tired of listening to fantasy reports. I have been listening lately to people describe the condition of the world. It is strange, I stopped watching the TV news reports, and now I am hearing them repeated to me by tourist or travelers.

I feel like some big Queen Bee sent these Drones out into the world to tell us what the Queen Watch on TV and what her opinions are, it becomes almost impossible to hear a new observation. Never ending rerun conversations...

A personal observation has less value sometimes than what a Television reporter lied about. I can be sitting here looking at something and a person come along and tells me what they saw on Television. I think,
- Stop it, we are looking at it, this is real, Television is a story told to sell Soap. -

I feel outside the tourist bubble in Africa and more like home, ok I have a game plan in about two months I will step back into Africa.
