Search for Hotels in Manila Philippines

I am in Manila, and I will leave for the island of Palawan today later. I am starting to look for better lodging for my future trips to Manila. I think the fair price for a single room is from 300 to 600 Pesos in Manila, I am talking about a backpacker price range. The Philippines is full of small scams so security is a huge issue, although safe, the culture is a weasel with the truth. Therefore trying to suss out the best places can be allusive, there are so many variable. I am thinking in the long run I will probably just start to skip Manila as it is losing any interest for me. Too dirty and too crowded, however fun in and expat chase some girls sort of way. By far the country of the Philippines has some of best, friendly, outgoing, and nice girls in Asia.

I am making my big first flight or jump in the Philippines, I have been to Banaue Rice Terraces and in that area, however I have not moved around much. I think it is because there are no backpacker here that move around, I can almost guarantee I will be alone unless I go to the major spots like Palawan or Boracay. The place is a the perfect place for a couple, or with a companion, however by yourself can be a little taxing as all of Asia can be.

By far South America is a lot friendliest and more warm to greet people place, however Asia is very warm as long as they see the money coming, more or less friendship only for sale, while South America or even Europe has places where friends can be found easy with the local. The expats here in Manila are exceptionally friendly and loyal, very helpful, however I have no locals for friends.

Sometimes I think I should log in the number or emails I collect in a countries, these are the friendlier places. I have collected a few in the Philippines from other travelers however zero from the locals. I do not have any local person emails from Thailand, Cambodia, or Vietnam, etc, only a few travelers. The travelers are a higher grade here in the Philippines than the Thailand version.

I guess Manila is a lot dirtier than Thailand, it is amazing how hard it is to walk down a street in this area. I realized I was walking by the Hyatt the other day and was so busy dodging cars I had never noticed the place. The only place the sidewalks are open is where there is a five star hotel.

Nonetheless, I am going to try to find a single room in Manila to stay other than the Friendly, I think closer to the Ermita area is better. Closer to the mall and shopping and the large grocery inside Robisons Mall. My guidebook and any guidebook says that down in Ermita or close to the mall is the Red Light or Seedy area, I think it is maybe, however right in front of the Friendly is the Lady Boy or Gay section of Maleta, I think I would rather have hookers hanging around more than the gays. The lady boys here are numerous in this part, close to the Maleta Pension however down towards the Ermita or Robisons mall is better for shopping. They even have a Pizza Hut down there, actually it sounds bad, but Ermita to me is where the Hyatt is located, so really I am in a better neighborhood, however the guidebook is difficult.

The Guidebook is way to negative on the Philippines however fair to say that the Philippines is 5 times more dangerous than Thailand. However Thailand is one of the safest countries on the planet. South America and the Philippines are about the same, however I am starting to think South America is cleaner.

Some guidebooks writers have this preconceived idea that the five star places are better, I personally would go home and never travel if I had to stay in five star hotel. These places are the most stale, clean, boring, and sterilized environments on the planet. A great place to live while doing business and for me about that, nothing more, sometimes the pools are fun. The Hyatt here is a CASINO... Nothing but a Casino, however this is the Philippines, always wrapped in a Casino or a few nebulous scamming things. Hard to ignore, however this country has so many parts I still believe it probably the best place to visit in Asia.

The government though has got their head up there... They are totally clueless on how to encourage tourist.

I am getting on a place today, the check in weight is 10 Kilos.
On the plane here I could have checked 60 Kilos.
This is almost a war zone mentality on weight, nothing can be worst than coming off a plane an having to go to an Island. They need to be advertising...
"Store your bag in our Hotel."

I need to really concentrate on this aspect of the next backpacker hotel for me to find, there really is no good reason, except to shop in Manila, so I should just hop in and hop out. However I have met some great expats here and this is fun. I normally am only in the under 25 backpacker crowd and they are getting boring, too predictable and really have so few life experiences all they talk is MTV talk or Movies, Music, nothing of substance.

Expats or expatriate in Manila are pounding away trying to bring this country out of the Primitive worlds, however as is all of Asia, still very connected to a lower civilization.

I need a Hotel in Manila for 300 - 600 Pesos, private room, and hopefully a kitchen, storage area, common area with TV. Not too many seedy people and the staff needs to be fun. I am always prioritizing security and number one and conversation as two. The kitchen and TV room makes the conversation. I am really need some clean!

I think it should be within 3 blocks of Robisons Mall and closer to the water.

Palawan Philippines or Island

Palawan Philippines

Sunday December 4, 2005, 6:29 AM
I leave Monday by plane for the Island of Palawan, I will be there until 18 December 2005.

Palawan is a large Island in the large set of Islands called the Philippines, I think this what or you would all a ?Difficult to Spell Word.?

1. islands: a group or chain of islands (often used in place names) 2. sea with islands: an area of sea with many islands (2)

Palawan, island and province of the western Philippines, between the Sulu and South China seas. The island (area, about 11,800 sq km/4,600 sq mi) is 450 km (280 mi) long and 50 km (30 mi) wide, with a mountain chain running through the center culminating in Mount Mantalingajan (2,086 m/6,843 ft). Coconut, sugar, rice, lumber, and livestock are produced here. Population (1992 estimate) 1,168,600. (2)

This is interesting, there is a mountain of some form that is 2,086 meters high, or 6,843 Feet, this is high for a piece of land that is not that wide or large. I would guess or think it is a volcano type island and not one of the types where two Teutonic plates or the crust of the earth is crashing together. I will see, however very interesting, the city of Quito, Ecuador or Cusco, Peru are about 2500 Meters high and can be very cool at night, Panajachel, Guatemala is about 1500 Meters and cool also even though in a more or less tropic area of the planet. I have not heard or aware of the Philippines building cities or villages in the mountains much, it is not what I have read or heard about. Mostly they seem to congregate their populations around the coast of the oceans or seas and be fishermen. Then inland on flat areas they grow rice. This is the wonder of the Philippines to me, as I read about or hear about the country it just is so varied, there is nothing I could say that does not have exceptions. As soon as I thought about the flat, rice patties north of Manila, I then thought about the Banaue Rice terraces on the edge of mountains.

It is a country with a lot of anything. Palawan has underground rivers; I have yet to read enough to understand how that is incorporated into a tourist destination. In Mexico near Playa del Carmen or Cancun they have Cenotes or a location where the underground river comes up to the top of land and people enter to swim or scuba diver, I think they take rafts into the caves when it is safe to do so. Cave are a very dangerous and not a casual type of interest that you can just enter, the water can rise and kill you if it starts to rain. Moreover, lately it has been raining a lot here in the Philippines.

I have been nostalgic reading my guidebook; it is about 5 years old and ancient in terms of guidebooks. It has the better or more interesting flavor or style of the Lonely Planet when I first started to read. The history in a guidebook cannot change and some opinions about destinations are always relevant, the price of Hotels and the names of Hotels will change. However, a guidebook can still be used relatively good for probably up to 10 years, or at least there is some value.

I purchased this one off of Khao San Road in Bangkok, Thailand for 5 Dollars U.S. and am very happy I have anything. I am amazed here in the Friendly Guesthouse how few people are sitting around reading guidebooks. It is more of a boarding house and less of a travelers Hostel, people are staying a long time. This is perfect in many ways, except for the old lady that sits and smokes all night on the one small couch and monopolizes the Television. I have not watched a movie in the last 10 days because of her.

The evolution or mix of a large boarding house and a hostel or guesthouse is the perfect mix; the best places to stay have long-term travelers for information on the area and short-term travelers for energy. A short-term traveler or the quick ones will stay less than two days and be sort of brain dead quick. They are tourist and are on a mission to collect all the,

?I was here, or I was there.?

Expats or the Expatriate is a person normally that lives in a location and sadly does not normally go and visit many places, however derives his or her social life by going to areas where there are other expatriates. There are many expat bars or club here, almost only for men, a man sort of thing. There are many men here with a small Philippine girl in tow as a wife or girl friend. These types tend to go and visit the islands or spend the money entertaining themselves with the girl or for the girl?

I have been cracking up, laughing up a storm about my new term for some of the women in the world.

Bangkok Thailand is full of ?Semi-Pros?.

Manila is full of ?Semi-Pros.?

A girl that ask you for money is a Professional you know what. However, the normal man can come to Philippines or Bangkok and accidentally believe he is talking with a nice girl that is not working. Note you cannot just ask a nice girl if she is working or a nice girl, this is a dangerous question and a great way to drive away a nice girl.

I will stop here more or less. Nonetheless, a Semi-Pro works like this, they will come up and talk with you, try to be your girlfriend. However, the man has to figure it out, it may be she wants the passport to your country and free. If suddenly, she decides she does not really like you she could ask you for money.

Semi-Pros are annoying and everywhere, I am very cautious when I am talking with any girl outside the USA. It is amazing the percentages of the Semi-Pros on the planet. I was laughing or thinking as Manila has many girls dressed in Medical or Nursing clothing going to schools or working in Hospitals. That is about the only safe bet in Manila in the tourist areas. It is very had to leave or move around in Manila comfortably the city is a land mine area of small problems. I stay in one area and do not try to just move around, as it is extremely annoying to walk. The sidewalks are impossible; they have so many cars parked on the sidewalks in the Malate area you must walk on the street and risk being hit by cars. I have found a few side streets that make better sidewalks.

I will leave for Palawan and change channels I hope, this is the wonder of wandering the Philippines, and there are so many tourist channels to view.

Scanning Travel Guidebooks

Travel Guidebooks

Friday December 2, 2005, 6:26 AM
Manila, Philippines

I am sad and frustrated.

I received this email from Ameen of Indus International.

Dear Andy;

I looked at the copyright statement on the book and I have scanned the page from it for you. It is attached. We will not scan this book for you because it will violate the copy right.

Please obtain permission in writing from the publisher and then we will scan it for you if you do get permission. Even though you state it is for personal use, you should still have permission from publisher for us to scan it for you.

Best regards,

Ameen Ayoob

I call this person from Bangkok Thailand and ask about having Guidebooks Scanned, He first recommended I do them in Thailand, a good or generous tip, however I said I do not live in Thailand and cannot do this. He wanted to know what I am doing with these books. I said both Research and to use them as a guidebooks. I told him I am Travel Journalger, or maybe you could say Travel Writer. I hate to use the term Travel Writer or the word Writer with my name. It connotes that I am a good writer, I am not a good writer, I am just a person that types into a computer and have created a following of sorts.

However the size of the voice is getting bigger.

How I was laughing when I heard his voice when I called him, I thought it was an Indian voice, I was calling the USA to get the good old USA service with a smile and pay way too much for anything type business. However there is some high tech stuff there so I can save money through technology.

Well, the bottom line is we had a discussion, he asked me if I got permission from the Publishers, I said no, and was not going to use this for that.

I called him a second time saying that I was not going to send books from Khao San Road as I first thought I was going to buy from and have them shipped directly to him. Khao San Road has the greatest collection of Guidebooks on the planet maybe in one place, however almost zero new books.

I need to buy the next five months or year of guidebooks to have all the possible guidebooks I need or want. I like guidebooks and do not like to search on the internet. I feel I get a 10 time better knowledge of a countries Hotels with a guidebook at 10 time faster speed.

This was my hot Idea, I though I would send this book to him, I blogged on this but cannot find the link presently because I do not have a connection in my room. So I was going to test his service. I am already worried about Quality because I do not believe a person from Asia does the same quality of work as a person from the USA. The cultures just do not know what the word perfect means, and Ameen is from Packistan and India is very much like Pakistans in culture.

Here is a joke about India.

I go Banged a lore

Bangalore is one of the techie or computer cities of India and may companies have got banged by using the India techies. I am in presently trying to find workers from India and Philippines, one reason I am in the Philippines presently. It is totally cost prohibitive, I cannot make enough money to pay Americans to make websites and stay in business. However I have been to both India and Philippines and know I need to interview of get lucky to find workers. I must interview 100 workers probably to find one that maybe will work, because of the culture.

OK. I thought I will risk 100 dollars USA to buy the books and then 150 dollar for him to scan, I thought I really want to have good guidebooks. Oh yes, Ameen got nervous when I asked him if he did the OCR or Character optimization of books, he says why do you want it. I said I want to search for words in the documents and move around easy. I can search for words like Bangalore if I was using an India guidebook and it would pop strait down a 1000 page book to the word. Much faster than trying to search through graphic images.

I am frustrated. I was up front honest, and do not want to cause problems for either Lonely Planet or Indus International. He seems to answer the phone so not as big as it sounds. However I am wanting to have a library of guidebooks. YOU got any idea, how a person with a backpack is suppose to have a library of all the guidebooks he has purchased. I have been to 65 plus countries I have purchase many guidebooks about 30 percent new and the other used.

I wrote Ameen three times on his contact form and finally got him to send his personal email, he does not respond to the contact form good so I wanted to have his personal email.

Aaagh, I am going to stop typing, He has the one new guidebook from and the two used ones I purchase on are on the way to his business. He want me contact Lonely Planet and get permission to scan guidebooks. I also really probably need the permission to scan from the writers.

I wrote Ameen yesterday and said I would write or he could write a letter saying this information was copyrighted and I he had informed me of this and I was agree to not distribute or use or put on the internet or anything he wished to protect himself.

This is crap, he knows or knew that the books are copyrighted. I gave him three phone calls to get through his head I am serious. I sent him the book and sent the notices saying when the books would arrive.

HE is cost me 100 dollars because he was irresponsible.

I am here in Manila, Philippines and will soon go to the Island of Palawan. I have a guidebook this time I purchased used in Bangkok for 5 U.S.A. Dollars, It was very hard to find. Guidebooks can be a very big expense for me, a real kick in my budget, I normally purchase the whole continent type Lonely Planets. For example the Lonely Planet South America I have probably purchased five of, every time I leave or go back I have to find one in South America when I arrive or buy one before I leave wherever I am at, maybe in Europe. When I am leaving from the USA it is easy, I can go to and buy one and have sent to my house.

I stopped and did not clean this, no spell checking, tired of thinking about this guy Ameen.

Indus International

Indus International

I am in a diliemna or moral quandry with myself, and really the blog is the problem. I generally like to post on my blog, it is a introspective trip into my feelings. When I type something into my blog reports or journal I learn what I am thinking and feeling.

I was very frustrated the other day, I sat and typed into my computer.. OFFLINE a big long comment on how I am having problems with Ameen at Indus International. Well when you are frustrated it is easy to be quick and say or think type thoughts that have a possibilty of being wrong. I try to or sometimes I think I avoid blogging when I am doing a few days of frustating work and keep the blog only on subjects of travel.

One of my friend told me, your blog is not a travel blog, I sort of agree, it is my journal, I do not know how to separate random thoughts from some travel thoughts. I think it would not be fair to the readers that really wish to learn how to travel the world to leave out the negatives, or include only the travel comments. Traveling is living and living is traveling, to learn to travel a long time around the planet is as when person ask me what I am doing,
"I live on the road, or I live traveling."

Therefore, I am living my traveling, for sure the art of travel is about learning to live anywhere on the planet in as comfortable and enjoyable way. The biggest problem is friendships, the lack of ongoing steady relationships with the same person. Then comes just plain creature comforts.

Ok, so the last few days I have been frustrated about two major things and my mother writes and says when are you going to blog....aaagh.

I am trying to open an account with a bank here in the Philippines so I can pay to have workers, I need to pay them fast, so a tranfer from my account to their bank card would be good for them. The banks say I need a ACR - Alien Certificate of Registration.

I am hearing lots of gossip from Expats- this site is helping me a lot, it has came up a few times now and must be one of the better sites on how to live in the Philppines.

I just read it and what I am frustrated about may be a problem because I am listing to expats and not really the government. I am stopping on the bank thing, it is a very frustrating process to walk or take a taxi around the city talking with people that do not seem to care.

Indus Interenational

I just got off the phone, it is about 4:45 in the morning and I thought I would try to get in touch with the person one more time. This really great internet cafe called Station 168 on Adriatico has free call to the USA on an internet telephone. He started hollering at me, I was amazed, this guy has the personality or lack of a personality. The guy is from Pakistan and living in the USA, I was hoping to buy the American culture of service, I was for sure not getting it from him.

Well the dilemna or moral quandry is this, the blog which is also my personal journal has the ablity to hurt a company. IF I put up a review pages on the internet it can hurt a company or help a company, some persons anonymously try to go after a company that they are problems with, so this can or could be right or wrong.

Readers tend to believe anything in writing is true. I tend to believe now anything in the newspapers or on the TV is crap, however the average person in the USA has a lot of trust in printed information.

I do not want to slander or say things bad about a company. I could make a lot of money if I would recommend sites that want to advertise and I say no. IF I will not use the company then I will not personally recommend.

I am in the Friendly Guesthouse or Friendlys Guesthouse here in Manila, I like Benjie and the place is good enough that I want to live there. Is it perfect no, it is good yes, I was laughing as I came out of my room. A man and his wife was in the process of opening the screen to the window of their room and breaking into their room. It is also very easy to jimmy the doors on the room with a knife or credit card because of the way the lock is constructed. Well the security in the guesthouse is about a 2 on a scale of 10, ten being the best. However it is safe because the staff is pretty safe and they do not clean rooms. Anyone entering the room should not be entering the room. When I leave I lock everything up inside my backpacks and chain to the bed, this keeps the honest people honest. I the dorm the last time I was here a camera and a cell phone was stolen.

I explained to Benjie the need for a locker, or lock boxes, especially for the dorms, in one ear and out the other. I have also been talking about the need to clean the toilets better. I like the place and have to clean them myself.

OK. I am living in this Hostel, that means it is better than other places, however I want it to improve and if a better places comes on the market I will move, especially on the security issue.

Should I say bad things about a company, person, or country. Many people get very angry when I say something bad about anything, like best to keep your mouth shut.

I cannot really harm CNN or BBC when I say they are lying, even though I believe it and it is the truth.

I can harm Indus International maybe when I say the guy has or is costing me 100 dollars because in good faith I paid for three books with and had them shipped to his office because he said it would be ok to scan as long as for personal use.

The guy hollers or screams at me on the telephone, very professional...aagh. I am trying to scan in the Lonely Planet Carribean right now so I can go to the Carribean and have a guide. I am saying to you, I use the Lonely Planet, that is like a free advertising for them, I also say bad things about the Lonely Planet, I am used to their format, I understand how they put together a book, so hard to want to change, I know the problems with their books. It is a good guidebooks, so should I say comments about them or should I do like most travel magazine and only sell my opinions. I am not for sale and will never be for sale, my thoughts and opinions are not for sale. IF a company can show me they are a good company I will talk about them for free, it would help persons to travel.

On the other hand if a company causes a person to be endangered or they lose money because of doing business with them, then maybe I should also talk. I have lost 100 dollars with Indus International and now have to rush to figure out how to get books for the Carribean. This area of the world is a land mine of expensive decisions, I absolutely need the best informaiton possible, before I make a move. I also had or was having a guidebook scanned for the South Pacific, because I also want to sit around and so like my readers, read about a place for three months then go to the place. I do not have have this luxury.

I wrote a long and frustrated email the other day, I knew or thought that my relationship was 90 percent over with Indus International, so was ready to send yesterday, which would have made my mother happy, she wants to hear I am alive. I did not blog, I put it in a holding box on my email client and was waiting to see if Ameen and his attorney could suss out a solution that would make them happy I am not breaking some law. is going to figure this out real soon as they are trying to scan in the Harvard Library and many more it looks.

I was very excited, I had found a business that could help me to have good information and would make it easier to continue to travel and to enjoy my trips. Plus to not miss accidentally on some really large tourist attraction that I should have seen no matter what.

I will seen the letter I wrote yesterday in frustration about Indus Internationaall because for sure I know it is true, he went from have a 10 percent benefit of a doubt to a zero benefit of a doubt for me, nobody should do business with this company, the company has no integrity or professionalism. All books have copyrights and all books do not want you to scan them or copy them, they are not going to permission to anyone to scan, Ameen is in this business, he knows this already. I told him I was going to scan the books, I was going to convert the graphics to word so I could search for word. I blogged about, talked about here, I am not hiding, I want to scan the Lonely Planets into my digital library. I would like to encourage Lonely Planet to do this so I could download the books, I pay for them either way. Buying used books to me seems to be losing them money more than me buying a new book from and Indus International saying he has to destroy the book to scan.

All this comes down to weight and speed.

I cannot many books or I will be overweight on a plane.
I need to find information in books fast, so I need to search for words.

I need to research and read about travel destinations for my use and to be a better travel blogger, not that I care that much about that. I am really just an extremely curious person and a collector of information. I like to have the best possible information at my fingertips.

THE INTERNET is not at my fingertips, I cannot sit around surfing the internet to find travel information, a good guidebook is 20 times faster and more reliable, the internet is full of mis-information or downright lies. Ash says he is not going to buy a guidebook maybe to go to India, I strongly recommend a guidebook, a guidebook saves you more than the cost in the first few weeks.

There is only one possible competition right now for a guidebook that is pretty quick on the internet, that is: is good, however takes too long and I think they probably edit out the bad comments and steer you towards the expensive decisions.

Virtual is good though and they do come up in my searches all the time. I have this theory, if they are smart enought to make a good website that can be found on They have a chance of staying in business. If I am going to recommend or even allude to a webpage I want to know it has a good possiblity of staying in business. Nothing worst then sending out hard code letters with links that break.

Most readers to not lose money by getting on a website, if I am on a website and the information is wrong, especially lies about the cost of the Hotel, it can cost me an extra 20-100 dollar very quickly. I normally do not drop cash, I have avoided this, however many times I get back on the train in Europe because there is not good value to sleep, or I just leave Europe as I feel that life is too expensive for the enjoyment.

I only know one Hotel in Macau that is ok, the Sweethouse, that is a big problem, a country and only one Hotel or Hostels on my list.

Nonetheless, amazingly Ameen decided to start screaming at me on the phone today, what a dingaling. I will lose my 100 dollars and I do not care, maybe it will help someone else to not lose money with this company.

So I am still trying to think this out, should I talk or say things bad about a company or person on the internet. I think now, or today yes, however best to limit to the situations where the person is in danger of losing large amounts of money or in danger of being robbed.

Many many many times I am frustrated because a culture makes my life a problem, I will talk about a culture a lot, this is the average norm or standard of the country.

I do wish it would always be an indication to people, if I am in a country, this is good, it is a good enough country I chose to visit it, this says I like the country or culture more than others. I like the Philippines however there are some real scamming things going on this country...

The secret to happiness is this.
"Do more things in a day that make you happy than things that make you sad."
NOTE: I will try not to blog on the days when the balance is going the wrong way.

However this means, I will close the door on Ameen and Indus International, I will lose my money and go on to a happier moment. I unfortunately for my readers who want picture I know have been trying to work on Internet business here so have not got many photos. Manila is not a very interesting city, unless I want to take photos of not such nice things like girls standing with mini-skirts in front of bars, trying to make you buy something, or many of the more dirty things of life. I take the photos anyway, however I am hoping soon to leave for Palawan.

I do not know, one of these companies is going to be my solution to paying persons in the Philippines I can issue a ATM card to the worker or they can apply for one.

Or maybe Well Fargo Bank in the USA.

My inclination presently is with Wells Fargo because it is safe for money, I heard discussions about the Philippines locking or freezing accounts because of the type of deposits you are making. I want something simple and quick as a worker needs the money. I really wish I could hire Americans however it is impossible to pay an American to enter data and make money on the site, it is not feasible.

Enough of this, sometimes I think I do not spend any time blogging, however I am doing this blog live and paying for the internet time. It has taken an hour to type this, maybe I do inadvertently work more than I think. Is typing in my journal work?

Life is good, I am promising myself, I leave in the next three days for somewhere, I am leaving Manila, maybe to El Nido in Palawan Island.

I am tired, forget the spell check... hehehe

Internet Offices

I am in Manila, Philippines, there is an Internet Cafe called Station 168 on Adriatico Street on the second floor. It is in the Malate area and across the street from the Starbucks or Malate Pension.

It is open 24 hours per day, I had a reader write me:

READERS comments:

Thanks for all the info you post.
I'm a self employed person in the U.S. with a business thats portable, so long as I have a broadband internet connection.

I've been planning to open end travel much like you do, on the cheap,, and keep moving to see as much as possible. However my strategy must be different as I need a broadband internet connection.

I can reduce to 3 days a week working, and also work only 11 out of every 13 weeks (one business quarter). The four days in each week I can branch out and explore from the base camp. During the 2 weeks free (4 times a year), I plan to move and establish another base camp. Thus always being a tourist.

I have put together a budget that supports $32 a day in expenses. Thats double what yours is because of my criteria.

Any suggestions? Is this do-able?

Once launched I will be happy to send you source material for your site.

Thanks in advance for all your great ideas.

This is becoming a very important question to me as my site get very big and I am wanting to learn things more. Travel is better when I can find information and collect information. I like to research and read information about places. Internet access is normally good or great in most of the poorer countries. Access is difficult in Europe and USA, however becoming easier with the Wifi connections.

However to travel around the world I need to find places like the Station 168 in Manila or a place that has good Wifi in my room. Now, there are business centers in the Hiltons, Sheratons and all the 5 Star Hotels, however you are not going to have freedom. You must be in a big city and who can afford to pay 100 dollars per day and travel.

I need this:
Less than 20 Dollars U.S. per night
Poor Countries need to be less than 10
A cable to my room or wifi to my room that is free 24 hours per day
Internet Cafe that is open 24 hours per day and less than one dollar per hour.
Broadband or something fast enough is needed.

I am collecting on a page places that are prospective locations. I need to keep earmarking the locations. Some of you are going to point out Wifi connections. Although this is nice, mostly they do not provice and acceptable place to work that cost nothing. A Starbucks cup of coffee cost too much and lets be real, not the best place to work. Good to look at women, however to actually get work or research done, not the place.

I am collecting links on this page or blog:

I know about three places on the planet:
One in Manila
One in Taipei, Taiwan - Taiwanmex Hostel

Many Hostels in Europe advertise this, however I do not know one that actually gave this to me, the walls are concrete, it does not work, it is down, nothing is up to snuff. In the USA you can find Wifi Connections. My solution for the USA is to have a motorhome.

What Eric wishes to do is do-able.
32 Dollars per day is high to me, however I pay this.
2 Dollars per day for internet
No more than 10 Dollars per night for hotel.

The operative thing here is a person has to jump from one "Internet Office" to the next. The idea of a base camp is perfect than move to the next base camp.

I know that many readers think they have the place, however they sometimes think too high on prices. 5 Dollars is one days pay on the planet, I am not going to live in Ecuador and pay 5 dollars per hour for Internet Access.

I posted his comment because there are people that have the money coming in and the portable ability to travel. There needs to be a way to really find these places. I am not going to go there until I get some form of real comment or review. I know all the Hotels and Hostel lie. Trust me I look for Wifi Connections in the Hotel.

Why does BBC Lie About Niger

Why does BBC Lie About Niger

Sunday November 27, 2005, 5:56 PM

I just watch a show on BBC the English 24 hour news channel. It is very disturbing to me what I watch.

I traveled and lived 21 days in Niger or something like that, and saw the country and seen the Food Crisis that has caused Malnutrition and is killing the children under 5, and some extras around the edges.

However, I watch this BBC show called Reporters and this lady, that I did not catch the name of says and used the words

Famine - about 10 times

Starvation - about 8 times

Food Crisis - one time

Malnutrition - one time

Famine is according to my Encarta Encyclopedia:

extreme food scarcity: a severe shortage of food resulting in widespread hunger.

What is wrong? Why use the word Famine?

Because it get news, it attracts attention. Famine will be Widespread while what they really have is Malnutrition or a Food Crisis cause by both the mother and the babies having a diet that is not balance and full of the proper foods. In the easiest way of saying it they do not eat the vegetable and fruits because the country does not grow them.

The problem or why it makes me angry is a Famine is not the problem, there is a need for certain types of foods to be grown and eaten in Niger. The focus on famine only makes the NGO like World Vision rich and cause the good people who donate to not force them work on the real solution.

1. A need for analysis of what foods are lacking in the diet of Niger people that would provide the proper vitamins and nutrients to stop malnutrition.

2. What foods can be grown and eaten that would provide these Nutritional needs.

3. Educate and provide the seeds, starts or support to grow these types of crops.

The people of Niger have maybe a 10 percent literacy rate, so you cannot just write in the newspapers. They do not read. They do listen to the radio, and a series of billboard in all the small villages would educate by form of pictures showing.

This report by BBC is a misinterpretation of the news, an outrageous and an example of the lack of integrity on the part of the BBC reporters. Why has integrity been completely lost?

I have been working to collect the information about this subject, I am not a nutritionist and I do not have libraries at my avail. So the research is difficult and time consuming, plus in some ways starts to cost me a lot of money.

The bottom line is if you mention the word Famine or Starvation in Niger an NGO or Doctors without Frontiers person would instantly correct you, this is not a famine it is a food crisis.

Tagalog Language of Philippines

I was laughing, I said hello to some cleaning languages in the hallway of my Guesthouse, they was working in an apartment above me. Well, they said,
"Hi, how are you?"

I thought, hmm... the world standard "I-LEANED-IN-SCHOOL" answer is,
"Fine, thank you, and you."

This is the text book answer to hello, so most people that study English as a second language say this, and nothing personal.

This is the cleaning people, I talk to anyone.

She ask me,
"Do you speak Tagalog?"

I thought or wanted to remember:

Bakit Hindi in the Tagalog Language however I have been out of the Philippines for a month or more and already forgot my two word volcabulary.

However, I said,
"How many foreigners speak Tagalog?"

She said,
"Vietnamese people."

Hmm... She go me, this is a foreigner, however I tend to think of Foreigners as only westernized people, a not so good perception as the Philippines is full of Koreans, Japanese and Chinese. I am in a Korean Internet Cafe.

I suppose on hindsight it was bad manners on my part to say this... Tagalog is an important language to her, however it looks like only 10 million people on the planet speak this language so very low on the need to learn list.

On the other hand the question is normal, they want to know if I speak Tagalog, I have yet to meet on Foreigner that speaks Tagalog and for that matter, I have not met one that has learned my two word volcabulary, so I am an expert for Foreigners that speak Tagalog.

After typing this I should remember or maybe remember how to spell the word.

Language is a culture, the culture expresses itself in the way they think, then when the talk it is the culture.

Why am I Grumpy

Why am I Grumpy

Saturday November 26, 2005, 4:22 AM

I feel like a Grumpy Bear.

There are telltale signs of problems for an Alcoholic of problems. I have been sober for over 18 years; therefore, I sometimes forget I am Alcoholic. I am an ex-drunk.

It really is not true, I see so much Alcoholism in the world it is impossible for me to not think or compare myself to the problems with alcohol that always surrounds me. There is a presently a brilliant mind here in the Hostel that I talk to daily, his brain is rather soaked in Alcohol, how can I forget.

There are signs of problem on the path leading to a person becoming and alcoholic and there are signs along the path back to starting to drink. When I was first trying to get sober, I would say,

I have a five minute warning.

Something would trigger me, and I had to somehow convince myself to not drink and remove the ability to drink fast. Something would trigger me and I would need a drink, although I wanted to stop, I needed a drink to be emotionally ok. I suppose there are triggers or thresholds in me that is sort of a low or high level frustration and anger. When I reach my limit, I drink.

There are signs along my path, I have a unique path, and everyone is different. I must watch on my path to see if the sings are there, and I must stop myself from walking down the path until I reach the point of no return.

Now that does sound melodramatic, I am maybe on a one-YEAR warning system presently. I would have to ignore and be very self absorbed for one YEAR before I would suddenly go off the wagon and drink.

I used to wear this gold small pennant around my neck, it said,

Balance and Engage.

This was a fancy way of committing to having or saying to myself strongly, I need to have a balanced life and I also need actually engage in life, take risk, do what I want, and live a normal life with no fear.

Therefore, why am I grumpy?

Why do I know I am grumpy?

Because I see or feel the signs that lead me, back to the bottle. I have some abstract feelings of familiarity. I feel like I am in a familiar way along the path. I remember feeling this way before and it makes me scared. I cannot drink, I would die.

I have had a few readers comments on blog posting that were both true, angry, and dysfunctional. I was lucky in the last week to moderate the blogs and not let them become active provoking comments on the blog, now allow me to moderate comments. This stops readers from being hooked by some idiot or dysfunctional person out in never never land looking to provoke an argument.

It is humorous to me as most of the provocative statements are in someway saying I am an idiot, or I am not perfect. I want to say,

No shit,

I fully accept that I there is a God and I am not him.

Well, they says some really mean intended comments, short, too quick, harsh and not well thought out. I blog the same way sometimes, however for me it very hard to just stop all of my thought. This is my journal, I am not going to stop thinking to make this person happy, however they can ignore me when I am off the wall, I cannot spend my life returning to my thoughts to edit them and I am not about to live an edited life for some reader, who should get a life and read someone else made to be unreal and un-believable blog.

One-person comment and then another person comment on the same idea. The told me I need to get a better guidebook. Now this comment although seems at first thought valuable, it really missing the whole point. It has no ability to empathize with an actual long-term traveler. A tourist wants to tell a traveler how to travel.

Yes, there is some good advice here.

The truth is this.

I need a guidebook.

I do not need a better guidebook, I need any guidebook, and I just need a guidebook.

I am making more money, I can buy more plane tickets, I can travel faster, and I can visit more countries quickly. However, I cannot buy guidebooks as fast as I change countries. It is very difficult to buy and carry guidebooks. If I purchased the guidebooks I needed for the last month, I would need.

Southeast Asia Guidebook.

Hong Kong and Macau

Moreover, it would be great to have the USA, Caribbean ones to get prepared, and South America.

I have two ways of seeing points of interest in a country.

1. I read a guidebook and go look at something, I follow the directions.

2. Someone sitting in the Hotel or Hostel says, I am going to go do this, and I listen and then I go do what sounds interesting to me,

I have been in Singapore, Macau, Manila, and Hong Kong. There is very little of interest to me in a big city, I am a country boy, I do not like cities, most of the things of interest for the travelers is normally drinking, partying and being stupid. If you think I have a boring travel life, you should listen to some of the other travelers. Or think do you think I am negative; there are people that drink themselves silly on a regular daily basis to avoid thinking, there are some superior negative people traveling.

Therefore, with my newfound success, I am also finding new problems. With the new problems, needs to come new solutions. How can I get a guidebook, buy a guidebook fast and carry them. These books weigh a lot, it is impossible. I need to either travel slower or not move until I find a guidebook or find a solution.

Many people do not have a guidebook, and some of the more experienced travelers are snobs saying.

I do not use a guidebook.

I personally use anything I get near, brochures on the wall. Postcards in the Hotel to send home tell me what to do; I read them books full of recommendations. I get on the internet; I do anything possible to figure out something to do or a path though a country. I have or had one guidebook in the last month and that was on Hong Kong. My gut tells me this Travel Writer lives in Hong Kong and knows very little about the planet. It was like a Five Star Restaurant guide. I could not figure out where to go and what to do without reading all 400 pages or studying the stupid mans book.

Time and boredom is my problem.

The internet is worthless presently as a guidebook. I would have to spend 10 hours in the internet to learn or figure out what I want to know from a guidebook in 15 minutes. I am not going to spend 10 hours reading or perusing around the internet to find the best hotel to live in and then figure out where to go visit. The guidebook is my answer.

Clarity is my answer.

When I am clear on where I am going and what I am doing and then I am happier.

Solution to guidebooks problem:

I just purchased three guidebooks about the Caribbean and South America; they are being shipped to a man in the USA that has a company that scans books. I am hoping he can scan the books, then email them to me. I am hoping to keep the cost under 50 dollars per book; the total cost including the book should be under 50 dollars. A very expensive guidebook, however trust me 50 dollars is nothing to make sure I am in the best cheap hotel, the having the best time and to plan my next country. Most of this has to do with planning.

Signs of frustrations.

There telltale signs, what are my telltale signs that would lead me back to drinking?

1. Frustrations.

2. Anger

3. Lack of serenity because I am not clear.

4. Avoidance, or staying in my room and not doing things to avoid thinking.

5. Impatience.

THERE ARE thousands of signs and muddled together.

However, in my world, in my nutshell, there is one sign I pay attention to, when I am not clear on what to do, or how to do it, if I am muddling around trying to figure out solutions too much, then am not in a good space.

I have had trouble taking photos and posting them on my blog lately. There are many reasons for this; however, who really cares, I am working on solutions to them as I am working on solutions to my cell phone, my guidebook, hiring people to work on my WebPages, and many other small problems of life.

However if I am clear on solutions, then I am happy and serene. If I have the proper balance of fun and work, friends and conversations, the proper balance of problems, challenges, and solutions. I will be happy, more or less, one day at a time.

Most casual readers want a snapshot of life. A perfect dream picture of travel. A total idiots view of how the world is or should be and dysfunctional to the point of absurdity. Honesty is the solution to alcoholism or dysfunctional behavior. I must and need to look at myself and try to see if there is a problem. Be honest with myself, get in touch with myself and find the solutions. I will not go into this much, however for sure there are groups of people that are free and can help with these types of problems. A person is not alone, there are many wanting solutions, go get help if you need help

The world is one big dysfunctional mess, in love with each other for our dysfunctional behaviors and constantly being a mess. This is life and normal, nothing new, all these problems and solutions is what makes life worth living. A perfect looking Singapore is one of the most boring places I have visited on the planet. Perfection is not perfect, imperfections is perfect, and the acceptance, that we are not perfect.

I am not going to drink; I am still ONE YEAR away. I am aware of my thoughts, my actions and my feelings. I am just a very grateful man that has too many choices and makes too many projects. I need many things to do to enjoy the day.

I really try my best to not sit around and blog about my WebPages or some projects. I think this is a little unfair to me. Why should I write a diary and write what readers want to read about, I should only write about what I am thinking about and not edit or hold back.

I say and think, I need to ignore that people read my blog. However, let us be real, it is impossible and very difficult to ignore. To actually ignore, I would need to remove the ability of person to write me or post comments. Then I could ignore the readers because they could not reach out and touch me hehehe.

I like the help the give me, so I thank them.

I have a lot of fun and analyzation laughs at the Techies that read the blog. 50 percent of the persons that read on the internet are self-absorbed, have no life person, which live eat and drink on the internet and totally avoid living their lives. Believing they have all the answers and that everyone should just listen.

I know I have no answers, therefore I am free. I am just having fun searching for new problems and new solutions.

Worry, I am worried about my WebPages. It is becoming an 800-pound Gorilla. The blog is only about one-half percent of the site or sites. The blog is about zero problems in reality unless just cuts me off or something stop working, then it become a focus or annoyance.

What I want is a web page that runs itself, no work involved and I earn tons of money for doing nothing. Nope, my 800 pound Gorilla needs fed, nourished and understood. I need to pat the head, try to help it and hope it along the correct path. If I feed it correctly, it can help me to never stop traveling.

I am very grateful to have 22 hours of playtime in my day and 2 hours of work. When a person writes me and starts to tell me how my grammar is bad, or how I am stupid, or some other great things. I sit here and think, I am sitting here on the other side of planet, looking at beautiful girls, Islands, and all sort of crazy things. I read a book every 4 days and do about anything I wish to do; I have many problems, frustrations and am not a perfect person. However, I could bet 99 percent of them nasty comments come from someone that spends 8 hours a day reporting to the man. Obeying, answering and working, doing something they hate and when they get a chance, they go and tell a person that is doing nothing he is stupid.

I am grateful, I have the time to just ramble and think, I have the time to just try to figure out whey I exist and what I am doing. I have the time to live my life. I do not have turkey sandwiches. I wonder if I can buy them in the Philippines.
