A motorcycle side cart used to haul goods in the Philippines.

The one man said it cost about 20,000 pesos to make, my bet is about 200 U.S. dollars on the high side, labor is 5 dollars per day.

Trying to show how the cart is connected to the motorcycle.

When I was in West Africa, it kept striking me funny, why do these people not have sidecars or side carts? Sometimes the government stops good ideas, I do not know. However, if they wanted a good look at a Motorcycle sidecar, this link would give you a good look. I kept thinking, I need to give these people a good look at what other countries are doing.

Our Hosting Company is WestHost.com for the last few months. I am NOT recommending this company, I am just telling you. Pleass, do not go buy, just because we are using this company.

Our former company was with Carlos of Relio.com, then he sold to something called.
Weberz.com.

This company is:
Genpac.com

The Weberz.com put the blog out of service and we had to make huge changes to do a work around, using other hosting companies. Therefore, we left Weberz.com fast as possible with the big sites. We are not fully saying goodbye and good riddance to the company Carlos sold Relio.com to.

Carlos said he would never sell, and sold.

Now we are with Westhost.com, the numbers are bigger, and some reason we have to again upgrade from level one to level two. Now it will be 219 U.S. per month. I only purchase monthly service from a hosting company and could not ever imagine more time periods. They sell, or otherwise change, and suddenly, what was reasonable, can become unreasonable.

Hosting companies are funny; they make money off the web sites that do not need what they buy. When you actual need everything to work, support, etc, to expand and do web stuff, they somewhat become disgruntled and say, we never had anyone do this before.

Dedicated servers are large headache, about 1 in 10,000 sites need them and the others are being told crazy stories by their techie staff. I am not sure we need it, but we have it, more or less makes everyone happy to not have large sites on sharing the server.

As of today, as best I can surmise, HoboTravaveler is 4.1 Gigs of root and 1.6 Gigs of Sql Database stuff.

HoboHideOut.com is about 14 Gigs of Root and about 4.8 Gigs of Sql.

There is a lot of decisions made for the future, the last think we want to do is be learning about the idiosyncrasies of dedicated servers and load balancing when we are up to our ears in submission to hobo hideout.com.

YouTube.com does not work for Mom
Mom and Dad cannot figure out YouTube.com. What a great test, I have been experimenting with my Mom and Dad, she is 74, and Dad is 75. This is a follow up post after this post, you may want to read this first.

A person has to throw things at the wall, if you keep throwing things at the wall, I guarantee something will stick and one day you know what you can throw that will always work.

Videos, what a mess, I have thrown 17 videos onto the wall called, YouTube.com, and then they threw one back. They rejected one for being too long, and this was not a good day.

This was rejected, but it is up now, not on youtube.com though.
Burkina Faso Carrying Water Video

80 plus Megs of upload, a long time of waiting for a good connection and YouTube.com rejected it, I thought the limit was 100 Megs; I do not have time to do this crap. I must succeed, I cannot have failure, I am not in Kansas, I am in the Philippine and this video was delayed two months because of slow connections in West Africa. Then rejected…

I took that video as a favor for the University Professors who research drinking water and cultures. It was a 10-minute long video, no cuts, no changes, nothing trying to change reality to fit me or my brain. The truth un-edited about how people in one place on the planet collect water and carry to their homes.

Therefore, when the truth gets rejected, not a good day for me.

I called Mom today on Skype.com and asked her if she watched the videos and what she watched, etc, I have put up 17 or more now. The truth is this, my most diligent, consistent reader, the one that stops me from explaining the un-sanitized versions of countries, has not seen any of the YouTube.com videos….aaagh.

She was semi-clueless but these two links worked, and YouTube.com did not. I now have to back up, reverse a course of action on my web site, and see it I can fix 17 other blog posts, whereby my mother can read.

This is and was a great experiment for me; I do not like to make difficult pages for my readers.

My mother is not stupid; I would say I am stupid, if I am the wiz kid, smart on the computer person, I should be smart enough to give my mother something she can view. It is faulty thinking to think my readers should know how to use a computer to view or read. I do not want to test people for computer skills, I just want to give them some videos and allow them to share the experience.

These links work:

http://www.hobotraveler.com/v1-philippines-quezon-city-elephant-ride.wmv

These do not work. All the videos I spent hours of making Mom and Dad could not see.

There is a travel moral here, I do not try to travel to Bangkok, I travel to Bangkok. Very seldom, do I turn back, I have no choice, and I have to make it. Highly ineffective people try to show people the world, I do not care about trying, I am going to do it, and my Mom and Dad are great experiments in how to make a Travel Site.

You will not get a person to write and email saying to you, hmmm. I was too stupid to know how to open that link. We need to learn from the people who do not offer advice, my Mother and Father are brilliant, the machine is just an older version. I am the newer machine, same builders, same model, just younger.

Filipinos Overseas Workers

Filipinos Overseas Workers
Sailors, Hotel Workers, Nurses, the Philippines is mined as a cheap source of labor for the world. I had an intriguing conversation with two men, one from England and the other from France who are here in Manila working to find these Filipino Overseas Workers.

A person working as a receptionist, a clerk in the clothing store, a construction worker, etc. will make less than 10 dollars per day, and often less than 5 dollars here in the Philippines.

Philippines people speak better than normal English, are quick to smile, often a playful, happy go lucky bunch, the formula for a good worker is here somewhere.

A person who Speaks English can get a job anywhere on the planet. Citizens from the USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand demand 80,000 to 300,000 US to go work overseas. While pay of 10-30,000 U.S. can easily convince a person from the Philippines to leave their home countries.

The Chinese people were used to construct the railway across the Western states of the USA, this is not a new idea.

Burkina Faso Carrying Water Video

Burkina Faso Carrying Water Video
A water collection video of people standing around a public water dispenser loading up pots, buckets, tubs, and big 55 gallon barrels, both pushed by humans or pulled by donkey carts.

This video is 10 minutes of one view, made for a person who really wanted to study how they collect water in Burkina Faso, or West Africa. September of 2007 I was in Burkina Faso.

The water carrying video is probably extremely boring for the average person. The people are using a water hose or maybe two to fill large tubs of water they then carry on their heads. There is many donkey carts lead by small children that fill up 55 gallons barrels.

Sanitizing My Travel Writing

Sanitizing My Travel Writing
My time in the Philippines has left me feeling like a hypocrite; therefore, I went to the dictionary to make sure I as calling myself the correct insult.

Hypocrite:
somebody feigning high principles: somebody who pretends to have admirable principles, beliefs, or feelings but behaves otherwise

I am sanitizing my travel writing.

One of my small goals for coming to the Philippines was to make small videos of the street children.

Then next I ironically blogged about this book,
Smile When You‘re Lying

More or less saying, and implying I am better than the normal travel writer and journalist. Agreeing that travel writers lie, and then being sarcastic about these fantasies, they write about. I have also use the word sanitize; I use it to describe the explanations people have of West African countries.

I am not clear, these are all fuzzy, unclear thoughts, there is no crispness to my beliefs and feelings.

I see things in the Philippines, I think thoughts, I have opinions that I refuse to write about, I guess I sanitize or clean up my writing, I leave out the whole truths. I do not lie, however I omit, maybe it is dishonesty by omission. I do not lie, but I do omit.

For example, I do not want to make videos about street children, and I am positive I do not want to sit around explaining, editing and writing about this subject. Maybe it is because there is no way to do this without taking a moral stance, then in some cosmic, take over the planet attempt to be good. I think of the term ahimsa. First do no harm, I find I sanitize what I write about because it could cause harm.

If I point my finger, blame someone, this is easy, and stupid, I would be lying, I also to not want to help the liars by taking the photos or videos they need. I know people distort the truth to make money, and the NGOs are the champion of this tactic.

There is nobody to blame for street children, it is very difficult to blame anyone or some government for poverty. If I were going to blame someone, I would blame or say the poor person is responsible for himself or herself.

See, hard to even talk or write about this, without taking a moral or blame stance, blaming poor people for their plight will not help them, and moralizing that they are responsible for their destiny is not going to help either.

I am in this mess of thoughts; I suppose all this could be filed under the thoughts,
- If I can’t say something good, why say it at all? -
Or my daily goal
- Wake up and be a good boy. -
Maybe,
- Do the right thing. -

The first goal of a 12-step call, is for you not to get drunk.

Stuck in Traffic in the Philippines

Stuck in Traffic in the Philippines
Manila or Jakarta, hmmm which city has worst traffic? Bangkok is great compared to Manila or the Philippines in general.

I read sometimes these extreme systematically how to travel pages sometimes, where somebody explains everything about how to go from A to Z. I normally think this is over the edge, I however think this type of guide is needed.

I was going to Mariveles, Philippines today, however got on the bus, sat for a few minutes and decided the game was a no go.

Called up Mark in a place Malabon and he was to meet me in the San Francisco Coffee Shop. I go from BF Home to the overpass at Ever Gotesco and cannot get a taxi. I ask some boys, which bus, and they say Cubao. I get on this, they say, wrong bus, Quiapo. I get on Quiapo and arrive an hours later in Ermita. Total cost was 20 peso for the motorcycle taxi and 25 pesos for the Bus.

Hindsight is 20/20, I could now do this 30 minutes faster, because I know the bus, and where to stand, but… I was trying to take a taxi.

Mark never arrived, he text messaged me and said they taxi refused to come for less than 300 Pesos, I think the normal meter price is 125.

I am very confused, I want have my friend, family and readers see videos. A video or small movie can explain better what I am seeing at the edge of the planet.

Mom and Dad, click on this link, and then tell me if you can see it?

We will make you famous! Upload your video?

Put me on TV, win 500 dollars, and be awarded the best of the best
Blah Blah Blah.

I received my third offer this week; my bullshit meter is going off in high squawking, squeaky annoying sounds. Turn off that noise before I slap you silly.

The GOAL of videos for Andy, my goal, not yours…
Use a video to explain better and more accurately what I saw and experience than photos or words.

I by design, and pre-meditated do not edit, cut, try to mix or interpret the videos I make, I try to document what may or may not be important and give it to people to learn and enjoy.

I also want to allow you to download the movie, distribute, show, and view as you wish. I am not selling these videos, I am more or less giving them to you to enjoy with copyrights intact.

I think YouTube.com or other similar services may be working against my goals. I am not sure, it is good to put these videos on YouTube.com, however, it is a plus not a reason for the video. I think I need to upload all these videos to my server, and save, backpack, and protect. I want you to be able to download, which is not the goal of YouTube.com.

I am confused, I do know one thing, and I cannot upload videos to every site that ask me to upload. I am a true traveler, I am very lucky when I get this huge file up one time. I do not know exactly, however, I am going to somehow give permission to others to upload to these services and use. I guess I can put some credits below on the videos so people do not steal.

I think YouTube.com is a nice service, I think in less than 2 years, I will have the same type of video hosting with my own hosting company. I do not think the technology of YouTube.com will be the only player. I believe the future is that every website will allow you to upload videos.

I do not know, I think many companies promise the hard working person some dream of being famous. 1 in a million will have this dream, and it is a dream they are selling us. I think I am going to take this hook out of my mouth.

If a person can watch this, then it becomes extremely complicated to put up on YouTube.com. Analogous sending a PDF file, the majority of people can read it, even when they did not understand why.

I do not believe I will get large amounts of traffic by putting my videos in YouTube.com. I think I will get a traffic on my site by giving videos to my readers to view.

I am not saying YouTube.com is not a nice thing, I am saying it not the best answer for a person who has a webpage.

I can be cynical and say why do I want to make YouTube.com famous, or I can say, how do I get paid for all this work. I keep trying to keep my eye on the goal, the goal is to allow readers to view, with the least amount of headaches.

A few years ago, people could not see this video; I think 90 percent can now click on this link and watch.
Elephant Ride Toy In Philippines Mall

I had a company ask me to upload this video, as it this small video was great. It was more or less a fun video, and for sure not a great video, therefore I was a concerned about why they wanted me to upload. I did not bite the bait, but some very good bait.

I think this links will work better form my parents on a slow dialup in the farmlands of Indiana.
