Baguio Philippines Local Market

Baguio Philippines Local Market
Session road appears to be the main walking street in Baguio, it is great, on one end is the super modern SM Mall, on the other end is the Baguio City market with vegetable, fruits with all those weird things sold in underdeveloped countries.

Here is a map in brief that explains about all you need to know about Baguio to start. What you must remember, a Taxi cost 30-60 Pesos. Less than one dollar will hire a taxi to most places you dream of going in Baguio. Taxis are truly the best way to travel in a city when they function properly in cheap countries like the Philippines.

I have yet to find a tourist attraction here that is calling me to go to visit. However I admit it, this is one the most affordable, easy, livable cities on planet earth. I am living at 1432 Meter above Sea Level in the Red Lion Pub and Inn, warm days, cool nights truly a pleasant environment. If anyone knows more places in the Tropics at around 1400-1600 meters above sea level, my ears are open, I am listening.

Typical underdeveloped country market, the big difference in the Philippines they wear western clothing, nobody goes native, at least I have never found native in the Philippines.

The sausage that is popular and I refuse to eat, there seems to be many varieties and maybe named after cities.

My Thai friend thinks Philippines is more expensive than Thailand, I asked her if the market was cheaper or more expensive. Her answer was,
“If I was paying 100 Baht in Thailand it would cost between 150 and 200 Baht here in the Philippines.”
She said,
“If you good at negotiating 150, if not than 200.”

100 Baht is about 3 dollars, while 100 Pesos is about 2 Dollars.

I will translate into my travel world, if I pay 10 dollars for room in Thailand, I am paying 15-20 Dollars here in the Philippines, truly a huge percentage jump. Thailand is more developed and modern than the Philippines, much richer than the Philippines but cheaper, go figure...

Normal sanitary conditions in 80 percent of planet earth, we bought some carrots, raisins and I force on her some cornic, plus a jacket for her because she has never lived in place this cold.

Notice the pawn shop sign at the top of photo, probably full of cell phones, the pawn shop is a common store in the Philippines.

Some type of cooked corn, called “Cornic,” I think this is a very cheap product and very easy to find in the Philippines.

If you want a nice place to live, truly easy, simple and cleaner than most cities in the Philippines, Manila is the dark side, and Baguio is the light side of the Philippines.

Baguio, one of the better places to live on planet earth.

Asia Explained with a Sign

Asia Explained with a Sign
Asia is as dysfunctional at they get, I have spent thousands of dollars in treatment centers, sat on my butt listening for years to understand signs like this … Society took it pound of flesh to force me to learn what this sign means. I was on house arrest for one year, they took away my drivers license for 10 years to make me concentrate and understand this sign. I am a recovering alcoholic, I have been sober for 22 years.

Here is a sign that explains everything you need to know about the Philippines, if you understand this sign you are prepared to be a world traveler, there is a reason why some countries are poor, culturally doomed.

I am living in Hotel, this is the sign inside the laundry area attached to the Hotel, a Hotel that does not allow me to clean my clothes in the room. This is the second time I have found a sign like this in the Philippines, and I admit it is as stupid as life can get.

Do they want me to bite, this is the stuff that made Johnny Carson and Jay Leno famous.

I am tired, someone explain the logistical problems with this sign, how Asia can create a no win situation out of something simple like the laundry.

My Thai Girlfriend Comes to Baguio Philippines

My Thai Girlfriend Comes to Baguio Philippines
My Thailand girlfriend text messaged me yesterday
“I am at Baguio Bus Station?”

I broke up with her last week; we have been dating for over 5 years. She has a Masters in Pharmacology and worked in a University Hospital, with a focus on cancer medicine.

She did not tell me she was coming, this was a complete surprise, she quit her job, sold some stock she had, and came.

---------------------------------

As best I understand, she plans to travel with me for the next month and a half. I am writing and explaining this because there would be too much dishonesty by omission if I did not tell readers.

I normally for the last five years have come to Thailand to see her, and roam around Thailand a little and plan my next journey. (I am planning South Africa now.) I do not go far because she works about 8-10 hours a day, six days a week, bottom line, she works a lot. I have gone on a few weeklong trips with her.

I normally omit situations that involved her, I leave her almost out of the Travel Journal, even though she has been with me the majority of time I visited Thailand. I have always felt it is unethical for me to write, take photos, and include her in my journal. It is bad form to constantly include someone, possibility make the person well known to readers, and then maybe in anger write about the situation.

This is a better situation, we are both adults and not prone to soap operas, she is my best friend; I am not going to do anything to ever hurt her, or allow anyone to hurt her. I am not going to take photos or say her name, she is my Thai friend.

I do not know where to start; it has always been easier to allow readers to live with their illusions and preconceived notions of me, Thailand or the Philippines. I can write something that is 100 percent facts and people will say it is not true, why explain myself. I will say statements, I have not drank for 22 years, I have a Thai friend, and let if fly. I do not go into details because the world wants to read a soap opera, they is a dark perverted side to people who are anonymous and truly want to start on a dark path, this is not me, I am just enjoying life.

Girls in Thailand and the Philippines who date foreigners are generally prostitutes. I guess in Thailand is about 95 percent and in the Philippines it is 80 percent, this mean the average white man is generally married to a prostitute. Men will suddenly take a prostitute and make it appear she never worked in a bar, I am not sure how they do it; this explains the type of men who live in Thailand and the Philippines. Love has a way of washing away all past sins, and allows a many to deny reality. Since I have been dating a Thailand girl, I would hope and assume they are capable of seeing I fit into this stereotype, even though it is not true. I fit a stereotype, that does not mean I am the stereotype, however I am smart, I do believe stereotypes explain cultures.

Hmm, so why did you meat your wife in Manila? Oh, ok, I understand, snicker, snicker… The group all agrees to not explain what we all know.

It took me one month of living in Chang Saen where she was working in a Hospital, I saw her every day in an internet café before she spoke with me. She needed to ask me to travel to another city to talk, I believe she would have been fired if she had talked to me in this small village. Thailand is racist, they consider the Foreigners trash and treat any girl that lives, dates, or marries a foreigner as a prostitute. Moreover, I believe they are right; 95-99 percent of the men are truly walking around with prostitutes even though they are in denial and lah lah land of want to believe opposite land. Some type of ego defense mechanism, that allows these low self-esteemed men to be happy.

Some people can live for years, oblivious to the feeling and thoughts of the other person. I am sure many a married person finally realizes their husband or wife never listened, never cared, and only took.

This is truly a difficult situation for me, I will try to minimize the comments about her, and however I just cannot live with a person for a month or two, travel, and hide this. There is a full story and the story becomes skewed because I do not say or admit there were two of us doing the activity. It is cheaper in a way for two people to travel, and the Philippines cost double of Thailand. She has already commented, the Chicken on a stick is double and the price of coke is double.

I expect to delete many comments, as all the perverts on the planet decide to make comments. I have a couple of Trolls who get deleted 90 percent of the time and are not even smart enough to stop, they will jump at this.

The vast majority of men who live or go to Thailand and the Philippines want to go and buy women. They want to be a big fish in a little pond, the rich person who gets all the women. They wish to use money to make themselves a somebody; however, in reality they are nobody. This group is close to insane; for sure they represent a group that is analogous to the book by John Steinbeck called Cannery Row. The are both saints and sinners, however at the end of the day, I know my mother would not want them in the house. A few can behave for a periods of time in between their bouts of heavy drinking, but they are unstable, unpredictable and prone to extreme anger. The do not accept reality on realities terms, they make it up as they go, and this is fine, this allow the majority of the planet to be happy, even in the midst of mass confusion, chaos and debauchery. I guess I would say, seldom do I see a person who adheres to the saying,
“To your own self be true.”

Generally we write one book and live another, this is life.

They make up whom they are, support this belief with words and continue to support the lies they tell, creating an illusion of who they are. I of course to readers appear the same, I leave out vast parts of my personality, and I have left out this Thailand girlfriend for years. She has been there, but not included in the conversations on this journal. Any critical thinker should be able to see the conflicts, I write them, I know they are conflicts, however this is the fun of writing, to make you feel, to make you think to allow readers to create their own story, I do not want to control your thinking, I wnat to open your thinking to follow many paths that you chose.

I know who I am and the stupid remarks and outlandish innuendos are funny to me. Always funny how people know more about what they are saying I am doing than me, they are telling me that I am just the same as they are… This is funny, they cannot believe a person can try to be good, they believe that all men are the same as them… Hmm, Thailand and the Philippines is hell for a single women, I do not include them in my thoughts.

Why I broke up is this, I have to admit after visiting Thailand for 5-7 years, I do not like the culture, the people are cruel, mean spirited and only pay attention to me when money is involved. They have no respect for me; and I agree with this assessment of foreigners, I generally have no respect for the foreigners in Thailand, however a great study in human nature.

She loves Thailand, I do not like Thailand, I am not going to live in some place like Chang Mai surrounded by drunks married to prostitutes. Or isolate myself and avoid these people with no friends, I want to generally like the people in the neighborhood I would live, not just one or two. Thailand is a great place for people who hate people, a hermit, a loner to the point of being insane. There is no necessity to have a good friend in Thailand; they do not invade your privacy, they do not care.

I will say, there is no reason to get a Thailand girlfriend in my mind, even though I have one. There are reasons to have a Philippines girlfriend, however if they met the girl in Manila, Angeles, Cebu, Boracay, and other major tourist areas, they may be living the lie, and probably are, happily delusional in their belief. I think it is about power and status, there is wonderful false sense, a great feeling when walking into a place where all the women think I am handsome and suck up to me.

Generally men hang around with me in these places, not sure what is up with this, some type of love between men, the good old boys club who truly do not believe women are worthy of opinion.

Well, I guess you readers are in for a trip as I ratchet up the rhetoric, I explain in increasing detail my intimate opinions. Remember, these are my opinions, you have the right to disagree, however incredibly childish to try to prove me wrong, this is my journal, not yours, you are spectator, a reader, this is not free speech. To try to change people is the most dysfunctional of all behaviors. You cannot change me, I cannot change you, if you change because of my writing, it was because you was ready.

Hmm, what a good time to include my new journal system we are creating, we are going to allow readers to read all the nasty deleted comments. This is just me making money, and truly a reality soap opera. I delete about one in five comments, they are just over the edge crazy, too much for prime time, and just people who hate themselves and want the world to hate me with them. I have to put this in a password protected area, make readers join the hobo club and log in, these people are incapable of writing within norm of society.

Relax all of you, this girl is my best friend, this is not a soap opera, I am just traveling with my best friend. I guess it is funny; it took me five years to get in touch with my feeling well enough to say,
“I do not like Thailand people.”

I like or love Thailand for the food, the beaches and it is wonderfully cheap the great value on the planet. This is the one of the greatest places on the planet to visit as a couple or single person. I can live better, cheaper and in great rooms, buy anything there at the best value on the planet. However, I truly have no reason to talk with Thailand people, by some quirk of culture; I have Thai friend in five years of visiting the place who is one of my best friends. However, I admit, their culture is not one I want to become or emulate, I am an American, still the best culture I know on planet earth.

What I Look for in a Friend

What I Look for in a Friend
I have an American friend from Kerala, India who I occasionally talk with on Skype.com. I realized why I like in him today. We had a long conversation and I told him was happy to be in Baguio, and out of Manila where every man is a Bar Fine expert.

He said,
“What is a Bar Fine?”

He did not know what a Bar Fine is, wow what a great friend, I am so excited to know one of my better long-term friends did not have a clue.

With the invention of Skype.com, I can live in a country with men who know everything about Bar Fines and talk to a good friends on a regular basis who do not. I can diversify my friendships in any country thanks to Skype.com.

I do not drink, I do not like to go to Bars, I will stop in, drink a coke, and have a good conversation, however mostly during the day. The Philippines has some the most educated Expats on the planet. However, I try to slow them down, minimize their ability to explain in unlimited detail about the Bar Fines world.

I think I was in Thailand about 10 times before I finally learned what a Bar Fine was; normally everyone around me assumed I understood. I finally got it defined.

You can enter a Bar, and if you want a girl working in the Bar, you can pay the bar to allow here to leave early with you. I am not sure why they call it a fine. I guess I truly do not want to understand or even explain better.

Dan is quick; he looked it up on Wikipedia while I was talking and started to explain.

Bar Fine

Travel can take a nice corn fed Indiana boy and turn him into a jaded person, I am still holding my own thanks to friends like Dan, there is still hope I have some innocence, I truly do not want to be sophisticated…. (I apologize for coming from a good family and Indiana. Hehehe)

Thanks Dan for calling me today on Skype.com and reasserting reality, rebooting my Indiana culture.

A man asked me last night
“Would you like to be back in Indiana shoveling corn from the corn crib?”

I said,
“I was never tempted in Indiana to hit a man person with a shovel, while walking down the street here I am tempted daily.”

He said,
“Good point.”

The art of travel is to minimize the negatives and maximize the positives, the road less traveled.

Cheap Hotels Baguio Philippines

Cheap Hotels Baguio Philippines
Are there cheap Hotels in the Philippines?

Yes, I believe they are called Transient Rooms, or Transient Houses, and if you truly want the cheapest of the cheap, go for a Bedspacer.

Normal Tourism in the Philippines is one of the worst values for the money on the planet, overpriced rooms; I can travel in the USA for the same price as the Philippines. The tourist inside the country and the Expats community all gang up on the average Tourist and say,
“It is cheap.”

This is nuts, the normal tourism in the Philippines is one of the worst tourist values on the planet, you get nothing for the money, it is way overpriced.

I continually try to cut through the many layers of crap fed to me in the Philippines trying to find the solution. I think I have discovered the solution, at least for Baguio.

Transient Rooms…. Wow, this for sure sounds like a place where Bums or Hoboes would stay.

A Transient Room Complex here in Baguio, Philippines.

TRANSIENT ROOMS DEFINED
I have yet to find a good definition of Transient Rooms, however a woman told me this yesterday. Bedspacer is when you share a room with other people, like a Dorm in a Hostel. Transients are people who stay less than one month, people who stay longer than one month are not transients, and they are living here.

WHY OWNERS HAVE TRANSIENT ROOMS
An owner can rent out a boarding room for about 50 Pesos per day, and they can rent out a Transient Room for about 100-250 Peso per day.

WHY TOURIST DO NOT LIVE IN TRANSIENT ROOMS?

50-70 percent of the tourists in Philippines are single men from the USA, Australia or other European countries here to find women.

The last thing a poor Philippine girl wants is to live the same as she already does, she want her new boyfriend to live in a nice hotel so she feels she is upgrading her social status.

I am going to stop there for now; I am making great progress on my search to find transient rooms. I visited a full-scale apartment, two bedrooms, stove, shower, etc that I could rent easily for 300 per day, it was called a Transient Room.

I talked to the owner of this Transient House, I think here name was Doris, she said I could rent a two bedroom apartment for 15,000 Pesos. I feel quite sure she raised the price from maybe 5000 to 15,000 because I am an American; a white guy is money on stick of the Philippine people.

I have found many rooms I can rent for about 2500 per month, the big problems is normally there are huge scams or cons involved, this is a great way to get cheated.

Interested in Cheap Room in the Philippines, get on Google.com or Craigs List and search for “Bedspacer Philippines,” or “Transient Rooms.”

Here is a good local group that has a list of links to help Expats in Baguio.

Expat Community page in Baguio, Philippines

I am hoping I can instigate the Transient Room to submit their rooms to . If the price of room in the Philippines were the same prices as Thailand, the same value, there would be 10 times more tourists in the Philippines.

The music played in the 50’s Diner in front of the Red Lion Inn and Pub here in Baguio makes me feel old. If I admit I know these songs, and even worst sing along, the world knows I am 53 years old. I graduated from Prairie Heights High School in 1974; the music will always be in the background of my mind waiting to remind me I was once a young man.

The front of the 50’s Diner an enjoyable restaurant here in Baguio, Philippines directly in front of the Red Lion Inn and Pub

There is probably a story behind the Dune Buggy; it appears to always be parked in front.

I walk in, grab a newspaper and belly up to the counter, say hello to many small Philippine girls who smile and look around to see if anyone see the smile on my face, the music makes me fee 18 again.

I can be found sitting at the counter reading a newspaper each day in Baguio, there are many newspapers in the Philippines in English.

I ordered two Eggs; I have no idea why they included that small hotdog looking thing. I am brave, I will go to Iraq, roam alone around Africa or ride and Elephant in the Royal Chitwan National Park of Nepal.

I will not eat a Hotdog for breakfast in the Philippines, even though it is one of the typical breakfast foods of the Philippines. The world enjoys serving up these little Hotdog thingies with unknown type of
meat inside.

Sleepless in the Philippines

Sleepless in the Philippines
Sometimes I need to write, I believe we search ways to explain ourselves to others, we throw out the bait hoping someone understands.

I was lying in bed here in Baguio yesterday watching the movie
“Sleepless in Seattle.”

---------------------------------

---------------------------------

The clicker in my hand, brain numb, rather mixed up and confused, I hear Tom Hanks talking. A radio talk show Psychologist host has asked,
“What are you going to do?”

Tom answers,
“Get out of bed every morning and breathe in and out all day.

And after a while I won't have to remind myself to do it.

And then after a while I won't remember how perfect things were.”

Life and living is not as simplified and macho as reading a book or a Blog post, or looking at your photos on Facebook. I know and feel the anger and frustration when I say,
“Life is Good.”

I have bargained with my life many times, and I learned I have no choice, of the two options, life is bad and life is good, a sane man must choose as Tom said in the movie.

“Get out of bed every morning and breathe in and out all day. And after a while I won't have to remind myself to do it.”

Life is good, and sometimes we do need reminded, sometimes we need a life less normal, however I try to remember to breath in and breath out, and put one foot in front of the other.

Philippine Friends in Baguio

Philippine Friends in Baguio
Everyone needs friends, I have been lucky here in Baguio, I read in the Lonely Planet that the was the place where Expats hang out.

There are always small clues inserted into these Guidebook descriptions and this time it paid off. I needed a place like “Cheers” where everybody knows my name, and after 3 days in the Red Lion is for “Cheers” in Baguio. I have found friends, life is good.

For example, right now, in real time, as I type this Sarah and Cathy two small Filipino girls waitresses are looking over my shoulder as I type away sitting at the Bar. I could not sleep it is 3:00 am, I came upstairs to use the free WIFI internet in the Bar area that is open 24 hours per day and strangely is full 24 hours per day.

I double dipped this Baguio Hotel, I was sitting at the corner of the bar talking and Tony the owner walked in, before I knew what happened I had arranged a free room in exchange for helping to list his Hotel on HoboHideOut.com The Free Encyclopedia of Hotel Rooms.

I will be adding photos daily to their page on HoboHideOut.com. .

The Inn does not have a regular domain; I hope to assist them in purchasing a domain name for 10-15 dollars and to purchase hosting for about 60 Dollars per year. I am recommending they put a Blog on the site, this will allow them to do update easily without knowing HTML. Webmasters love to become needed; I estimate that 80 percent of the Hotel sites made five years ago have not ever been updated. I am like a mechanic coming into a Hotel to fix internet and computer maintenance.

This main benefit of the HoboHideOut.com site, an owner can attach photos like in Facebook and put descriptions, it is self-service. Moreover, SEO it will always be better, we just have more experience at this game. I think we can make it so they update our HoboHideOut.com and the updates go directly into their pay for play website.

I have been laughing, a Vet from the USA by the name of Philip has realized I understand how to write and make internet pages. Well, the short story, he has a site with a Blog called SailToAdventure.com. I have been explaining to him how the internet works.

As best I understand today, you can purchase 25-35 foot sailboats in Los Angeles for less than 2000 US Dollars, many people have abandoned them in the slips and they are even crushing them to get them out of the Marina.

Friendships are full of good stories, I already have a few from the Red Lion where everybody knows my name, and if they do not, they soon will.

What is amazing, the floors must be a foot thick concrete, I can go down stairs, sleep with never ending party right about me, and hardly hear it.

Somebody do me a favor, go and sign the guestbook at SailToAdventure.com, I am sure it would make Phil happy.
