I called today and had a great conversation with Ahmed Hassan. I need two backpacks urgently and he helped me out, he says they will be delivered by the 19-20 of February. I would love to have a great traveler bag for my trip to Ethiopia, it would make life easier.

This is a photo of the bag, I believe it may be the best possible design for a professional traveler on the market.

Two bags cost 295.00 US Dollars including shipping, the man was really nice on the phone today. I paid with Paypal.com, he understood my situation and said they would be shipped today.

Amor Fati Continental and British Airlines

Amor Fati Continental and British Airlines
I need to love my fate...

Tonight I fly from Lima, Peru to Chicago with Continental Airlines.

On the 25th of February I fly to Ethiopia on British Airline.

Both of these airlines are involved in crashes today.

I decided to catch up on my reading of other peoples Travel Journals today and in their normal churnalism manner, many were Blogging about the Crash of Continental, so I turned on CNN News to see what happening. They announced some news about British Airlines crashing on the runway in London, England.

I take a pause when ironic fate crosses my path.

QUESTIONS

Here is the question, do my odds increase of being in an airplane accident because I am using these airlines? Or, because there has already been two airline accidents, are my chance better? Or, is this just some type of gamblers fallacy?

25th of February I Go To Ethiopia

25th of February I Go To Ethiopia
I will leave from the USA on the February 25, 2009 and arrive in the early morning of the 27th in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This is an exciting trip for me, Ethiopia is one of the few countries I have heard traveler make noise about for years and I have not visited.

Many people say the women are the most beautiful on the planet.

The tricky part of Africa is the exit strategy, I am considering two locations, either Kenya, or South Africa, either way I could visit at least five countries.

I have tendancy to live in each country for a minimum of one month, I am an unusual traveler this way, it is customary for travelers to continuously move because they are going to stop traveling. I on the other hand know I am living in each country, I am not just visiting.

Visa is Required Travel Tip

Visa is Required Travel Tip
When you read these words, “visa required,” my recommendation is to realize this means almost nothing. Interpret it to mean, you need to continue to read...

“What you need to know is, can you get a visa at the airport or the border crossing?"

What they call this permission is almost irrelevant.

The definition of Visa is semi wacky, what we need is permission to enter a country. I am planning to buy a airline ticket to Ethiopia today, I want to know if I need a Visa, here is what the USA government website says, obviously very confusing.

First they say you should get a Visa, then they say you can get one at the airport on a arrival. Make up your mind! ?????

The point of this tip is, do not trust the words “visa required,” you need to continue to read.

Many Visa companies are making Visa sites that lie, saying everyone needs a Visa, do not trust sites, do not trust the USA government site, it is truly difficult to access if you need a Visa. I am flying to Africa, my two best choices are Ethiopia or Kenya, to choose another country is to choose a problem. You need to choose the path of least resistance. Normally, when you are in an adjoining country, you can get the onward visa, it is highly rare to not be able to enter the next country down the path because of visa problems.

Ethiopia Requirements from the USA Government site.

First it says you need one, then it says you can get airport. WARNING, you need to collaborate information, you need to find this type of statement in two or three different ways.

"ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: To avoid possible confusion or delays, travelers are advised to obtain a valid Ethiopian visa at the nearest Ethiopian Embassy prior to arrival, and must do so if entering across any land port-of-entry. For example: travelers wishing to enter Ethiopia from Kenya at the land border at Moyale, must obtain an Ethiopian visa first. Ethiopian visas ARE NOT available at the border crossing point at Moyale. Travelers should apply for Ethiopian visas at the Ethiopian Embassy in Nairobi or at other Ethiopian embassies in other countries. Ethiopian visas are available to U.S. citizens upon arrival at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa. U.S. citizens may obtain one-month or three month, single-entry tourist visas or 10-day single-entry business visas upon arrival at Bole International Airport. This service is available only at Bole International Airport and is not available at any other ports of entry in Ethiopia. "

Sciatic Nerve Injection

Sciatic Nerve Injection
The Doctors / Pharmacist took me in the back room in Pucallpa, Peru and gave me an injection, he wanted me to have one per day for three days. He gave the first two and I gave myself the last one.

The Doctor cost nothing, the medicine cost 69 Soles, contrary to anything you believe, more medicine is practiced in Pharmacies around the planet than in Doctors offices. This is an excellent system as 95 percent of medical problems are common, there is no reason to pay a fortune for small problems.

I am not sure a sciatic nerve problem is simple, however, it is more painful than serious. I am always annoyed with Doctors and pain, they always seem to want to stop the pain, and do not focus on solving the problem. He said this was to drop the inflammation, I suppose it felt good for three days.

I had great luck here in Lima, Peru with computer repair person by the name of Roberto. If you are in dire need of computer work in an country close, whether Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile or Colombia, it may be best to move into the Pretty House Hostel. The family will connect you with Roberto easy enough as he is a friend of the family.

Roberto speaks English more or less, he can understand your problems.

This is Roberto in the Pretty House Hostel.

My computer crashed, the disk was broken, there was no way to use the recovery feature. He took the raw data on the computer and pulled it off the disk and reconfigured it. Then completely formatted the hard drive, reinstalled windows, and all the drivers. He charged me 150 soles or about 45-50 USA dollars. It took his computer running about 24 hours just to extract the data from my hard drive, what is rare here is he actually put value on the data, and thought about solutions and not just replacing parts.

Again the simple way to have your computer fixed or repaired would be to just move into the Pretty House Hostel until it is done. They have free Internet and a computer to use, so if you are in damage control mode, a great situation. This makes finding each other simple, no frustrating game of cat and mouse, trying to hunt each other down while speaking Spanish on the telephone.

Note, anything a Latino person says, expect it to take a lot longer... this culture had no handle on time. I have already suffered the pain of worrying about a Latino techie here in Lima, Peru, so you do now you can find a good one.

I figure 1 in 20 techies has a clue... Roberto is the 1

If there is one thing I know about techies, they normally charge a lot of money, know nothing and leave things in a wreck. This is why I am recommending Roberto, it truly is not fun to wait for days hoping the person has the brains to fix the computer.

Travel Tip

This is the secret to safe travel.

Ryan wrote me a few weeks ago asking if it was possible for him to buy an immersible electric water cookers from me, I wrote him back asking him to send his address, but did not ask for money, he then sent his address, I guess I forgot to write him back.

"Andy,

When I did not hear back from you regarding a price for the immersible electric water cookers, I presumed that you did not care to deal with me. However, I just received the three extremely useful cookers that you sent! In a world where people so often commit with words but often do not follow through, it is a pleasure to find a person who speaks through actions by just doing. Thank you, Andy, truly! I know that you did what you did as an act of good will, and I deeply respect that. I sent to you some money, by Paypal, to contribute to you and your various endeavors. I have learned more of value from your website than any other on-line resource that I know of, and I am grateful to you for sharing your knowledge so that I may better learn the easy way!

I would be pleased to return the favour, if there is anything that I can send or do for you to aid in your travels!

Kind regards,
Ryan"

What does this have to do with Travel, close to everything. When you are traveling the planet, you will only meet strangers. What you give to them, will come back to you, if you are shit, then shit will be returned to you. If you are a good person, then good will be returned to you, you need to optimize your chances of good by giving good to other people.

I think my readers often get confused on these issues, a person also needs to let their yes be yes and their no be no. When talking with people we need to state the facts as we see them, sometimes this feel harsh or jaded. However to do the right thing, we must say the right things, we cannot just forget their are consequences. If you give bullshit answers, then people will give you bullshit answers back.

I have been laughing, I have joined this organization called Linkedin.com, I have had two people want me to endorse them. I have refused, even though I did business with them, I do not trust them.

However, if you do good deeds, slowly you get people who will endorse or recommend you for nothing.

What is even weirder is the idea that people believe all successful people are bad, the bigger my website becomes, the more people assume I am a bad guy. When I was nothing, the majority thought I was good.
