I am in a no-pay zone.
They try to give me everything for free.
I put a small File Transfer Protocol on the machine I am using.
Load on my file to upload. Configure and upload.
The program is so slow that it is stopping from errors.
I am using an FTP program best for Window 98. They have Millenium or XP
on a machine that should have 98 on it. I can publish from the browser line.
If any of you techies know a SMALL ftp program that works.
It must be maybe 1-2 megs.
It is big normal city in a country that is developing.
The is lots of street crime. This is normal in lots of countries. This reminds me of Peru. Maybe Acapulco, Mexico. Sort of the same level of dirty in the normal streets. They have these nice streets that are clean, but the back streets are dirty. This seem the standard for years. Not a new thing. People that throw trash on the ground. Throw trash on the ground.
What is safe?
To most, nothing is safe. Stay at home please.
Do I want to hang around Soldiers... Not really. They are the targets, if there is a target. They would be an easy target for most. It has a lot to do if whether the locals would help you find a shooter. If they do not, then it is very easy to shoot a Soldier. If they help find the shooter, then difficult to shoot without getting caught. My gut feeling is that these people are helping the American Soldiers as best they can.
If you got the Huevos, you got the Huevos.
I think they have very good internet in Mosul.
But they seem to have lots more users.
So it is slow. What does that mean?
I am going to take 5 dollars more a trip to publish the photos.
Only 2 hours in the city...
I am again on the Hobo budget. Life is good. I am paying 6 dollars a night after bouncing off the hotel recomended by my friend. The Nineveh Palace Hotel is the one I bounce off of, but there is 2 of them. I think the coalition troups are in the other fancier. I am not going to tell my hotel just to be cautious.
I had to use all my talents to get this hotel with the minimal amount of stress and money.
It was a series of strings to follow and not unhook. But I am good.
This person wrote me below. I will reply with CAPS.
can I just say a big "THANKS" for the time, effort and money that you must be putting in just to keep the rest of us informed. I did actually try and sign up for your membership, but the final link wasn't working.
SORRY ABOUT THAT. I AM NOT SURE. MEMBER - NEWSLETTER - DONATION. I HAVE NOT GOT THIS BLOG SET UP TO BE SUBSCRIBE TO. ? I HAVE NOT TRIED.
I am curious about the actual border crossing between Silopi and Iraq. You write that it was easy, yet you also wrote that you were bounced back the first time. Why was it easier the second time? I have a British passport, a backpack and no press card. Is there anything you recommend that folks like me should or should not say and/or do?
THE FIRST BOUNCE WAS A LAUGH. I TOOK OUT MY CAMERA AND THEY SAID TO GO BACK. SECOND TIME I WAS IN TAXI AND THE GUY KNEW HE WOULD ONLY GET HIS MONEY IF I CROSSED.
DO NOT SAY YOU ARE PRESS OR MEDIA. HAVE A RESPECTABLE JOB AN BE TURIZM - THAT IS HOW THEY PRONOUNCE IT. SMILE A LOT - SHAKE HANDS AS IS THE CUSTOM - TALK TO EVERYONE BE NICE - YOU ARE AN AMBASSADOR AND A GUEST IN THEIR COUNTRY. GOOD MANNERS WILL OPEN ALL DOORS.
I HAVE A USA PASSPORT.
NAB A TAXI IN FRONT OF THE HOTEL HARBUR / AVOID ALL THE REALLY GOOD SPEAKING ENGLISH PEOPLE THAT WANT TO HELP - IT WILL COST YOU MONEY. THEY ARE VERY NICE - BUT...
Was your passport stamped when you left Turkey and when you entered Iraq?
I THINK IT WAS CHECKED. AT LEAST THE TURKEY OFFICIALS LOOKED AT IT A LOT. I HAVE SOME FORM OF PAPER TO ENTER IRAQ. UNLIMITED TIME I THINK. I DID NOT LOOK AT THAT CLOSE.
I read your blog almost every day. It isn't necessary to reply to me by e-mail. You can just post it on your blog if you want. That way, other people can read it too.
GOOD WAY TO THINK.
CHEERS... I AM TRYING TO PRACTICE MY BRITISH ENGLISH.
I OPENED A NEW BLOG TODAY ON JUST THE GUIDE STUFF.
NOTHING IN IT YET.
Thanks in advance,
My messy room.
The perfect cabinet for in a Hotel or Hostel... Almost.
