Ovarian Lottery

Ovarian Lottery

I always called this “Lucky Sperms.” However, I realize now Warrens Buffets term “Ovarian Lottery” has gained more traction in the world of Buzzword Bingo.

Warren Buffett describes in The Snowball, the most comprehensive biography of his life Ovarian Lottery:

Ovarian Lottery
I’ve had it so good in this world, you know. The odds were fifty-to-one against me born in the United States in 1930. I won the lottery the day I emerged from the womb by being in the United States instead of in some other country where my chances would have been way different.

Imagine there are two identical twins in the womb, both equally bright and energetic. And the genie says to them, “One of you is going to be born in the United States, and one of you is going to be born in Bangladesh. And if you wind up in Bangladesh, you will pay no taxes. What percentage of your income would you bid to be the one this is born in the United States?” It says something about the fact that society has something to do with your fate and not just your innate qualities. The people who say, “I did it all myself,” and think of themselves as Horatio Alger – believe me, they’d bid more to be in the United States than in Bangladesh. That’s the Ovarian Lottery.
But you want to know the

When in Rome, do as the Romans do, when a person is in poor country, better to downgrade, when in a richer country better to upgrade you look. Truly, the more I travel, the less I think the first world won the Ovarian Lottery.

Who is happier? Haiti or Dominican Republic.

Sosua Map

I will venture out today from Sosua to Cabarete for a visit, trying to understand my world. I see the world as small neighborhood, defined by the distance I can walk easy.

I have now walked to most areas on this map; I often leave when I am tried of taking photos in my small world. This small world is a better than most because there are some intelligent Expats to talk with at Rocky’s bar and Restaurant, which is also the cheapest Hotel.

World expats are a rogue bunch, some groups are just plain drunks, other can have insight, and for sure if you leave for five years, when you return the world will have turned. It is difficult to buy or live in one area too long, the majority of good friends seem to leave.

If you look close, you can see that Cabarete is about a half hour to the East of Sosua. After today, I will have figured out the easy way to travel to Cabarete, this is more or less opening up another Tourist Path for myself.

Known Travel Paths
I have known areas and unknown areas, I will try to expand my travel areas today, and my exploration area will grow larger. Many people rent cars, and quickly drive to these areas, this type of situation is problematic, and it becomes a life of high-speed existence. Many people fail to see, the reason to leave the USA or Europe is to shift from fourth gear into first. They do not really know more, they just can say they do, a sort of travel blindness, plus nobody really cares what I know or you know, it is your personal trip, the more areas you “stopped at” does not enrich the experiences.

There are pro and cons to expanding your known travel paths, the more you know, the better you understand, and often the more you know, the more you want to leave. Sometimes one good clean snapshot of an area is best, if you lucky you will not deface the tourist photo by knowing the true essences of culture.

Staying in the resort is a way of taking a good clean snapshot as a memory, free of the emotional cultural traumas and fatigues of adapting to madness outside the resort. However, if you live in the resort, I would appreciate you not saying you know the culture it annoys us outside the resort.

Plans to Make Backpacks in Guatemala

I have a 90 percent perfect design ready to make long-term traveler bags. I will travel to Panajachel, Guatemala in a month or two and make between 50 and 100 Traveler Bags or Backpacks. I have been working on this project for about five years, in this time I have made about 14 prototypes. I have made about five in Nepal, three or four in Peru, a couple in Thailand and just a mess in the Philippines. I have visited Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia in search of parts, and probably a few countries I forgot.

This is a simplified drawing that explains a backpack; the backpack will include DVD, Manuals, online videos, and a never ending updating of educational materials.

Educating Buyers
I have hired a girl from Egypt to work on a PHP Database directory on HoboTraveler.com that will do have two functions.
http://www.hobotraveler.com/backpack/

Educate:
Educate readers and buyers about Backpacks, this will be a continuous evolving process. The hope is a reader and user of the backpacks, realize finally, a backpack for travel should be different from a backpack used for mountain hikes; this is a different genre of backpack.

Sales of Travel Bag:
We will install a shopping cart system, which will sell the Windmill Backpack. It is named because I have been working on this Backpack and dreaming so long, it is as if I am chasing Windmills.

Collecting Parts and Fabrics in One Location
The most important aspect of a backpack is first the materials, fabrics, clips, buckles and hardware. This is difficult; each part has a function, the trade jargon, and a manufacture that is probably the best on the planet. I must learn these words; I have been talking with many suppliers around the planet, and have decided I must stay with USA distributors.

The parts will often be made in Asia, but I will purchase them from a USA company to guarantee the quality, utilizing their experience. These parts then will be collected in one location and shipped or carried by me to Guatemala.

Contract Sewing Machines
I will either purchase or contract people in Panajachel, Guatemala or neighboring villages to do the simple sewing. I suspect I may need to purchase a sewing machine for shoes, and bring it to Pana, maybe a rivet machine.

1. Make list of all parts needed.
2. Purchase and have shipped to Indiana or my home.
3. Carry or ship these raw materials to Panajachel, Guatemala.
4. Identify each part or component of the backpack, and slowly make and assemble a couple samples.
5. Revisions
6. Fabricate 50 to 100 Backpack

This is not as complicated as it could be, we can rather stumble our way towards the goal. There is a need for fortitude, and persistence, with enough patience to slow down this project to a stop if needed until the quality is perfect. I am in no hurry; I have been working toward this goal for years.

Difference Between Prior Attempts
In the past, I tried to find a company to assist me in the manufacturing of the backpacks. I have given up this aspiration; I have not found any up to my standards of perfections. I will create my own production team of sewing machines and people, this way I can guarantee the quality. It is more hands on then I wanted, but it has to be this way to make the perfect traveler bag. I will be doing the sewing myself at times, until I know the process is correct.

I suspect after I am selling enough bags we will move production to Shezhen, China just on the other side of the border North of Hong Kong.

Win Free Backpack
I will give two free backpacks away, roughly a 275 Dollar value.

ONE:
Best Suggestion as chosen by me, Andy Graham the HoboTraveler.com

TWO
Best suggestions as chosen by readers. (We will put up a poll for voting soon, this stuff will be assigned to the Egypt PHP Coder.)

Art in Sosua Dominican Republic

I made a video as I walked the road leading to the Beach here in Sosua, Dominican Republic. When I am finished, I am on the beach.

I thought this DR painting was good; there are maybe 50-100 shops here in Sosua, selling paintings. For the most part, they are repetitious and use the same style; more an attempt to earn money than to be creative, but as is normal with art there is the 1 in 20 that is good

I have seen maybe 50 shops here on Sosua Beach; it is fun to browse around. However, in my opinion it is more of a cliché art collection, not good artist. I have not seen one actual artist in this area painting, however who knows, they maybe be hiding somewhere. I personally would want a picture of the artist with the piece of art to complete the moment.

RSS Feed Returns to HoboTraveler.com

Stripped, modified, and designed to make me money, the RSS feed returns to the Andy HoboTraveler.com Travel Journal. It is not even a snippet, more of a glorified bookmark.

RSS Feed Button, this is an extremely difficult thing to monetize, if the site was 10 times bigger, and I am huge it would be easy.

I remove it about a year ago, with a lot of frustration and concern. I was especially concerned about Ash, a loyal reader for many years. I do care readers, however many are questions mark…

Well, the RSS feed has returned, but it is NOT the same. It will just provide only a notice that I made some noise; it will not even give you the title. (Google has a work around, truly there is no escaping these scrapers.)

I encourage readers to subscribe by email, this is best for me. This allows you to forward emails to friends, this is called viral marketing.

Syndication
RSS: Really Simple Syndication

Or Really Simple way to get free content with no need to learn to write.

I was extremely excited when the RSS feed came out, I thought it would drive traffic to my site; instead, it allowed other sites to use my content free, not even a thank you. I have doubled my readership in the time it was gone, it truly is not needed, but I do want readers to have the convenience of monitoring the post.

Yahoo.com was using at the bottom of their Travel Section; I was told the New York Times has it on the bottom, I never personally spied it. Nonetheless, I could care less about fame, I want money. I am not going to play games; I make this site, to earn money. Why? Because I love to travel and it takes a lot of cash to travel.

Dream about Travel, but be effective, be honest, try to accept that money is necessary in life, and it allows you to find your dreams, it is not the enemy.

FTC Guide Governing Endorsements Testimonials

Blogger and Travel Writers are worried, they are being told to expose their dirty little secrets. Wow, I finally figures out what Travel Writers are talking about, and this is GREAT. I was in Haiti and off the news grid for a few months; I now understand what the Travel Writers are talking about.

Blogger Need to Explain How they Make Money
Blogger, Travel Writers, Internet Pages and more or less casual writers need to disclose when they endorse a product, talk, write, and make money. There has developed a small panic with Travel Writers all over Planet Earth. This is good for me, bad for them; I am enjoying watching there rush to hide their dishonesty in advertising.

Explaining Has Problems
I have a few well-intended reader comments, when they understand; they try to help by clicking. I put the donate button up again as one remedy to readers who feel an obligation to pay, who feel they are receiving benefit for nothing.

My Self-Policy Made Years Ago
I am not going to claim innocence; however, as chief writer for the HoboTraveler.com Travel Journal, I have tried my best to explain through the years. I made my own self-imposed ethical decision years ago to not search for Free Hotel Rooms, Tours or Airplane Tickets. I am not saying, I do not take them, or would not take them, but getting involved is a problem, the moral dilemmas collide.

Bottom Line, I do not like being nice to people in exchange for FREE.

How does this effect Andy Graham of HoboTraveler.com
Example: Verizon provides me with a HTC Touch Pro II with their Global Data Plan. This is a benefit to me, I receive indirect financial gain. Now, I will try my best to explain the exact and specific nature of doing a review of this product.

Example of Reviews: I was given a neck pillow a year ago, I was asked to review it. I hated the thing, so I never wrote about it. The women told me I needed to pay for it, it became a joke. I said, do you really want me to review this and tell folks what a joke the pillow is. Subsequently, I have made the self-imposed policy, I will only tell folks what I like, and I am not getting into the what-I-hate business. However, I also have always said, I will only write about things I would buy myself.

This is a great move by the FTC, truly the slimy behavior of Bloggers, Travel Writers, and all Internet Pages need to stop tricking readers.

Thank You
Andy Graham

CNN Heroes Saving Haiti

The morning comes to Hotel room in Dominican Republic, I turn on CNN, and I think I need closure. I lived in Haiti for two months, and then just when I leave, the country of Haiti experiences a terrible Earthquake.

I do not like to hear CNN in this melodramatic way say,
“Saving Haiti.”

I want to scream,
“WHO IS SAVING HAITI?”

Why does if feel like CNN is saying that CNN is saving Haiti?

I have friends in Haiti, I know them, they will pick up the pieces, and get on with their lives, they do not need CNN, and they do not need me, they are my equal.

Cultural Manners

To be a responsible traveler, to be polite, the essential need is you treat people as equals, even when you know you are outrageously richer. Sadly, the developed world goes into underdeveloped countries and tells them,
“You need saved.”

I would like you to read a newsletter number 48 I wrote nine years ago in Belgium called:
Cultural Manners

Equality
I hear the world preach equality, however in the next moment remove the dignity of other humans by saying that are saving Haiti.

CNN is not heroes.
CNN is not saving Haiti.

I have friends in Haiti, I know them, and I lived on Rue Lamarre in Port-au-Prince for three weeks. I know my friends, yes they would like some help, but if I returned to Haiti. I sure as hell would not say to them,
“I came to save you.”

There is an arrogance of man, the inherent desire of man to want to say, I am better than you are. We buy cars, we buy houses, we buy iPad, and we live in Five Star Hotels. Then somehow say to others, look at me, I am better than you are, I am more important than you are.

The people of the USA want to know, we are a country of people that will help. The people in other countries want to know, they will be treated as equals. For one country to feel better about themselves, it precludes the other will feel worst.

Read this piece, and hopefully you will see some insights why I am angry with the USA, CNN and the Non Governmental Organizations wanting to say, “we are here to save you.”

Kindle Download for PC Computer

You do not have to buy a Kindle, to read a Kindle book. The Kindle or the iPad could save my back, I have carried up to 15 books in my backpack, (3 right now), however, I am waiting. I will pay five Dollars for an E-book, I will pay 50 Dollars for a Kindle. I am waiting for the prices to enter the Non-Splurge zone of economic reality.

Chris says this works, I may never know, I think people who earn over 125,000 per year can presently afford the Kindle, I am still too poor. (a.k.a. Cheap)

Download Kindle Reader for Computer

Just in case, I find a Kindle Book for 5 Dollar, I downloaded the Kindle for my computer. I do not know if it works, but I will give it a try.

PDF formats are good for books, I have about one GIG in books that I have downloaded, but truly I think the Mobi-Pocket format for my Verizon HTC Touch Pro II is best.

I all my readers should click reply, attach a couple of books on PDF and send to me, this would make me happy. All this to read a book, I like libraries, however I am also a great scrounge. I am always on the hunt of a FREE real books in Hotels, and I doubt the locals want to steal my normal book at the beach.
