Around The World Airfare

This is my page to help guide you step by step how to travel around the world cheaper or the same price as if you purchased an around the world ticket.

I am Andy of HoboTraveler.com and have traveled the planet for 11 years. I have never purchased an around the world ticket because I want to be able to change my plans.

WHY?
1. The cost is normally higher than if you purchased all the tickets in the cities you are visiting.
2. The tickets are very restrictive to your time.
3. Even though the agent says you can change the dates for free, you will find that the local agents with extort money to do this, so the date or location change are free. (Better to email you agent for changes.)
4. NO FREEDOM to roam the planet, so what happens is people lose large sums of money because they radically change their tickets.
5. The airlines KNOW that they will make maybe 20 percent more because you change the date, the times, or the destinations, so even if the ticket seems cheap remember. If you are traveling around the world you will change your plans. It is normal to want to change, and abnormal to adhere completely to a schedule.

This is a self made around the world flight tickets. It is NOT an around the world ticket. It is a way to get the same price, but construct it as you go and have all the freedom in the world.

How this works is that you must travel by land from gate to gate. When you get to a gate you give yourself 5-10 days to find a plane to your next destination. You should pay no more then 300 dollars for you next jump. A jump is like continent to continent. A hop would be inside a continent. A hop should not cost more then 100 dollars. But normally you would take a bus between Jump Gates.

MY BASE OF TRAVEL

GUIDELINES - WHAT IS A GATE?

• Gates are cities only. They are not countries.

• Some gates are between 2 cities only. For example Madrid to Buenos Aries is a cheaper flight because so many people fly from a Spanish speaking country to a Spanish Speaking country, but Madrid and Buenos Aries are terrible places for the most part to travel to other places.

GUIDELINES SLEEPING

• The cost of room and board is part of the ticket cost.
  For example: Why fly out of London or New York if the price of the room is so high that you cannot live. Try sleeping at friends..

• Hostel Reservations: HOTEL - HOSTEL

GUIDELINES - COST

• Total cost of around the world fare should never be over 2000 Dollars USA.

• "Jumps" are continent to continent - Maximum pay is 300 Dollars USA.

• "Hops" are inside a continent - Maximum pay is 100

• Give 5-10 days to find and leave with ticket.

GUIDELINE - TRAVEL BETWEEN GATES

• USA - Inside the USA the best deal is for Greyhound with a 7 day notice.

• A layover city is a place that you can get cheap flights to other places. For example if you wanted to fly from Chicago to South Africa the ticket would be very expensive. But if you flew from Chicago to London. Stayed a few days and bought a ticket there the cost would be a lot less. The cost of the room in England is the big problem.

GUIDELINES - CHOOSING YOUR GATE

• You want to travel by land from gate to the next and try to enter and leave through a gate.

• Better to talk in person then by email.

• Take into consideration there are high and low seasons for plane tickets.

• Jumps are continent to continent - Maximum pay is 300 Dollars USA.

• Hop are inside a continent - Maximum pay is 100

GUIDELINES - AGENTS

• A travel agency is almost worthless, and agent is the agency, I would never recommend you go to a travel agency, I only recommend agents. Note to learn about consolidators and mention to the travel agents.

• Always price show with any and all travel agents, even if recommended, they are greedy and you must shop around.

• A travel agent can sell an air consolidator ticket to you.

GUIDELINES - What is good price?

• 750 U.S. Dollars will get you 12 hour away or exactly on the other side of the planet one-way, basically you can go anywhere on the planet for 750 U.S. Dollars.

• I get on and test gate to gate prices and then start to buy, find the carrier and then go tracking cheaper prices.

• I check on and see what prices they have listed.

LAYOVER CITIES - Gate bouncing

Probably better to go to Miami and go to S America
Probably better to go to England then South Africa
Probably better to go to Tokyo and then to Bangkok
Probably better to fly into Lima then go anywhere in South America.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE A GATE?

• The city will have signs in front of the travel agencies with possible cheap tickets.

• Where the tickets are really cheap they will use a felt marker because the prices vary from day to day, this is the best.

• The advertisements in the paper are cheap or their are lots of airplane tickets advertised.

• offices are maybe in the main gate cities.

• The in some ways will be the cities included on an around the world ticket. But this is not very accurate and could be very misleading.

• Prices are changed on a front advertising board daily or weekly. Not permanent.

LAND TRIPS BETWEEN GATES

The way to think about gates is regions, then you take land trips between gates, board the gate plane and jump to the next gate. Thus you travel around or between gates again.

There are many discount airlines surrounding gates.

 HOTELS WHEN HOPPING OR LAYOVERS - CHEAP

MINI - MULTIPLE STOP PLANE TICKETS

- Accumulated cost of a one stop layover is cheaper. (But you have time restrictions)
This is a strange thing about plane tickets. It is very easy to stay or construct a mini around the world ticket where you have few days in each city where the plane would normally stop. So if the travel agent says that the plane stops in a city, ask the agent…
“Is it possible to spend a few days there?”

A good one will admit that this is possible, a bad agent will deny the possibility. I am probably going to fly with Delta from Amsterdam to Chicago (Stay 5 days in Boston)  and this is allowed. There is someway they buy a ticket or arrange the seats between the stops, and all they have to do is choose a different day. These mini multiple stop plane tickets are great. You have to commit a little, but nothing like a very restrictive around the world ticket.

AIR CONSOLIDATORS  Learn about this: Air Consolidator

The little advertisements in the back of large city or gate newspapers are normally consolidators, be careful here, however this is a great place to find cheap tickets. They are not Travel Agents, they are discounters, or wholesalers.

GUESSTIMATE OF COST PER MILE TO TRAVEL

I pay 10 cents per mile and never more than 20 cents per mile, however 7 cents is what I want.

What I know:
- 750 USA Dollars will pay for me to go one-way anywhere on the planet if I am a smart buyer.
- Distance around the planet is 24,901 Miles or 40,075 Kilometers
- The farthest I fly is maybe at max 12,000 miles or 20,000 Kilometers to the farthest distance from any present point on the planet.

.0375 Cents per kilometer traveled.

ONWARD TICKET PROBLEM
I was just in Amsterdam as of September 2004 and they kept or refused to sell me anything but a two way, round trip, or return ticket. Bottom line is was hard to buy a one-way ticket. This is a huge problem and ridiculous in many ways.

PLUS the one-way ticket is very expensive. In Bangkok Thailand this is not the case and you can buy a one-way ticket for one-half the price. What you want is one-way tickets.

How to get a one-way ticket is the problem with this jumping gates method of around the world tickets.

NOTE: To get them off the idea that you have to have a FORWARD ticket to enter a country one way is to get a visa although it is not really needed. I personally have never been required to have an onward ticket to buy a ticket. I did however get a bus ticket out of Costa Rica one time before I left and when I came back I had an onward ticket. This rule is almost never enforced and probably mostly for the poor countries going to the rich countries as the people do not leave an go home.

2. Eurolines bus system can jump easily and efficiently without so many worries about weight of bag.   Europe

3. The train is relatively expensive in Europe and not a very cheap way to travel.
   But the cost from Brussels to Amsterdam is 35 Euros as of October 2004.
   - You get off the plane in Brussels and go to -1 floor or the bottom there is a train to Brussels.
   You can buy the ticket all the way to Amsterdam. You first go to NORTH Brussels and change trains... Be careful as there are 3 Brussels exits. You will go to Amsterdam and there are only 2 exits, the first seems to be the Airport. You will want to get off at the Amsterdam Central Station. You need to always book hostels or hotels in Europe or arrive in Amsterdam at 10 AM in the morning as that is the time the people leave. Later in the day and you will be sleeping on the train. This is not the cheapest way to get a reservation, the cheapest is to deal direct with the Hotel, but  more difficult and risky. But this works...CHEAP HOTELS

  - To go from O'hare to the Greyhound.com bus station you by way of a blue line train that comes to the airport. You can buy a ticket for 1.75 Dollars at a machine. You will need a dollar or coins to pick up a pass. Go to the CLINTON stop that is about 40 minutes from the Airport. Get off and as you ride up the escalator you will see a sign that says. the Greyhound station is at 630 West Harrison. When you get to the top of the escalator there will be no sign saying where Harrison is located. Go straight forward for 2 blocks and you will see S. Harrison. Contrary to wisdom you turn right on this street. Go 2 - 3 blocks and the Greyhound station is on your right.

Getting bumped or having your plane trip delayed is profitable and advantageous. To get bumped and snag a free ticket or room for the night normally you have to go volunteer. Go to the check-in desk and volunteer or stay very close to the desk and wait for them to offer. Not an easy thing to do, and you have to be a sweet talker and work the desk people.

DISCOUNT AIRLINE:
A company that sells tickets that are not sold by travel agents.

CHARTER:
A private tour company that hires a place for a trip from one location to another location and sells all the tickets.

A city that you did not necessarily plan to visit, but the travel agent will allow you to stay for free. Sometime you "Gate bounce" in this way. For instance you can may wish to take Ryan Air from Spain to Brussels. Then buy a ticket to India or Southeast Asia because the total cost of a ticket as a sum is cheaper and it is NOT possible to buy the cheap ticket from Spain, you must travel to Brussels and "Layover."

Gate bouncing - What you do when you are trying to construct or Hop from one expensive location to a cheaper gate.

OPEN JAW - A ticket where the final destination is not the same as where you started.

STUDENT FARES
A student fare can be excellent, and they often offer good deals on one-way or open jaw ticket, but BEWARE of internet pages with search engines. They are baiting you as a student and are not normally a good fare. I have found that for 600 Dollars I can fly about anywhere in the world.

SUNDAY PAPER - MAYBE SATURDAY
To find air consolidators or the cheapest airfares you need to look for advertisements in the Sunday or in some countries the Saturday newspapers. Sometimes there are free newspapers in the area or student newspapers that advertise the cheap flights. What you want to see or hear is the words Air Consolidator

SUB-GATES: A gate to maybe a specific location. Example it is normally cheaper to fly from language to language, Spanish to Spanish - Spain to South America or English to English - London to Australia. But is NOT a UNIVERSAL Gate.

UNIVERSAL GATE: A gate that will get you about anywhere in the world cheaply, or better than most.
