My impetus for travel is to understand local life. To learn how people shop, what they cook, how they work, what their passions are, and to better understand the thread that connects us all as humans despite so many cultural disconnects. That can only be achieved with slow travel, living in various places, breaking bread around dinner tables around the world, and sampling a bit of local life wherever I go.

I'm a freelance writer on the topics of travel, personal finance, and lifestyle design. I also have a popular website called The Professional Hobo.
How does a person prepare?
The biggest, hardest step to full-time travel is the first one: making the decision and taking the leap of faith. I did that long before I figured any of the other "stuff" out!

What mistakes have you made, that you would recommend people avoid?
Although not my own mistake, I've watched people try to travel before they've cleared up their debts and other financial obligations. Unless you have a guaranteed income on the road, don't leave home with unfinished business.
One Travel Tip?
Only one? I could go on ad nauseum about flying in business class for less than the price of economy, volunteering in trade for accommodation, and the benefits of train travel, for starters.
Biography, explanation of life of living in many places, the longer story:
In 2006, I sold everything in Canada (including a busy financial planning practice) to chase down my lifelong dreams of traveling the world slowly, getting under the skin of destinations I visit and gaining an understanding of what life is like around the world.
Since then I've been traveling full-time, and have visited over 15 countries and counting. Here's what adventures the first four-years entailed.
I've since developed a location independent career as a freelance writer, which affords me the luxury of making money wherever I go. With that modest income and some travel hacks that keep my cost of living fairly low (here's what my 2010 expenses were), I live well within my means and want for nothing.
Nothing, that is, except more travel adventures.
