Mirror of Site

Travel information about Mirror of Site (s).

Travel Webmaster or any webmaster of a large site will reach a point where you want to have a mirror or way of backing up your site continuously.

I would like to be able to synchronize my site to another hosting company and in the event of too much downtime switch over the DNS number and seamlessly go to another hosting company.

INFORMATION FROM MY TECHIE OR IDEAS

Andy,

OK..One of the ways to prevent downtime would be to have a mirror of the
main site. I could set up a script using RSYNC on the backup server so
that it mirrors hobotraveler.com on a daily bases. The only thing
required would be, that the hosting companies install RSYNC or give me
ssh/shell access so that I can install it and have everything setup.
Also, the backup server/mirror will be consuming a lot of bandwith when
synchronising the site with hobotraveler.com. So, we need to know whats
the limit etc.

Having 2 servers with the same domain name is NOT possible. The mirror
would need to have a URL like mirror.hobotraveler.com or
hobotraveler1.com etc. OR if the main hobotraveler.com site goes down
and if the downtime is more than 48hrs, then you can change the DNS
settings to point to the mirror. But, this makes sense only if the
downtime is 48hrs+ cause thats the same amount of time DNS takes inorder
to propagate around the world..

If you have a server with 1000megs of space, I could start work on the
mirror & c how it goes. That way we could test mirroring the whole
hobotraveler.com using scripts so that its automated, before going for a
permanent solution..

OR

you can signup with Speedera
http://www.speedera.com/primary/services/wsd.htm They have a kind of
load balancing system or distributed computing where in the site is
cached onto multiple servers (globally distributed) around the world and
the closest to the client will process the request of the webpage. Sites
like Yahoo! etc use Akamai http://www.akamai.com/   which basically
implements the same thing.
