Volunteers have the opportunity to live with a local host family, or with other volunteers in a local guest house. The projects are based in the heart of Cusco, with weekend opportunities to visit the Sacred Valley and Manchu Picchu.

Volunteers can help teach English, organize after school projects, assist with homework and feeding programs, and provide these children with much needed love and attention. Medical/Nursing professionals and students are welcome to work in one of the busy medical clinics or hospitals in Cusco.

The Global Volunteer Network currently has opportunities to work on a range of projects in Peru. Volunteers can become involved in childcare, teaching, construction, healthcare, cultural, and conservation/wildlife projects.

Volunteers will primarily be based in Cusco, but may also participate in projects in Arequipa. Cusco is a city in south-eastern Peru, near the Sacred Valley of the Andes mountain range.

At childcare placements volunteers assist the children with their homework, organise educational activities and provide the children with love and attention. Volunteers can also work with street children at two shelters located in Cusco, helping with a feeding program and also teaching basic English.

At construction projects volunteers assist with construction and/or renovation usually at a childcare project. Construction projects change all the time, but our partner organization is currently helping to build a new orphanage in Oropesa, near Cusco.

I am seriously considering BrucePeru and the work they do with mothers of the street children www.arribay.com. As someone who is trying to get more on-the-ground experience working with poor women, I like their approach.

Still, I get nervous after reading the comments below.

If, by chance, I do not choose BrucePeru, what other orgs are out there?

THANKS

I would like to add to this discussion. I worked for Bruce Peru for a few months. There is absolutely no reason why the schools should be under funded. This project makes enough money however the money is not administrated correctly. This project receives $500 monthly from one volunteer. The staff receive no wages not even the Peruvians or when they do is next to nothing; the International volunteers are not paid. Other funding comes from teaching English in the evening to adults for a fee of $25 monthly. In Trujillo there were 5 - 6 classes taught daily with approx 10 students in each class. In Cusco there were 4 classes with again 10 students in the groups. This is just from 2 centres, How can this not work??????? It also receives personal donations, you do the maths. The vast majority of the centres are free and even some of the accomdation he provides he does not pay for. He has to pay for food (basic) uniforms once a year and equiptment, which is not purchased well as all the centres are under resourced. The comment below stating that is hard to manage centres due to the volunteers changing, yes it is but also this speaks volume as this project has been going for over 6 years so it should be sorted out by now. It could easily be sorted if they paid the Peruvians then they would stay, they are poor after all so why not pay them?? What happens is that they work there as a way to get a reference in the hope of getting a better job, but as soon as they do they leave. Normally after a few weeks. This is not good business and certainly not good for the unstable children that attend the programme. On the other hand if a few would be paid they would stay, you can not do anything about the volunteers continuously changing however if there are some long standing staff change over should not be a problem. In fact this is really used as a bad excuse that has not been learned from nor developed. My other bone of contention with this project is why do they only receive the one year of schooling after they have been in the centres, and why put them in to the centres? because they need to be prepared for school apparently ????? This is ridiculous, that would mean that at some point every child in Peru would have to have had some kind of pre-schooling?? As anybody ever heard of such a thing?? and could you really imagine this happening in Peru?? It’s a third world country, come on guys!! The more I think about this project it makes me very angry this Man Bruce Thorton (which is just one of his many names) is a complete con man and because the politics of Peru are in the state that they are he is able to slip through the net and make a lot of money. The children however get a school uniform and a year in school. Thanks Bruce!!!

I-m a little disturbed with some of the comments, and some of the opinions being voiced on this forum. I myself spent 3 months at Bruce Peru Huaraz in 2004.

The organisation has the right objectives. But development work, and in particular, running centres with volunteers who change every 2 months is not easy. If some of the centres are badly managed, this is the challenge he also has to work with.

There are many constructive things you can do in this situation. My group echoed similar sentiments to many of you initially, so we did something about it. We looked at ways to get other organisations involved. This brought money, which brought full time local staff. We also looked at ways to organise the centre to make it run better.

If you-ve had bad experiences, then this is unfortunate and sad. But sometimes, those we are blaming are facing the same struggles, and all they want is some help - every little we can do helps too.

For those who question the value Bruce Peru brings to the kids. Its much more than just the number of years schooling. It brings them hope for a better future. It gives them an identity. And it tells them that someone out there actually cares about them and their future. In a way many families don-t. Changing the mindset and instilling belief that these kids can do something with their lives is the best thing Bruce Peru offers.

I still echoe some of your sentiments. Yes the organisation has challenges. If you are uncertain, don-t pay anything until you arrive there - this is what I did. But if you arrive and find a centre struggling, think of what you can do to help it. This is making a difference to the kids lives!

My time at Bruce Peru inspired me, and changed my life. I-m now going to work with one of the leading organisations in international development, and hope my future experiences are as rewarding as the magical months I spent in the Peruvian mountains!

Hey, I volunteered with Bruce Peru in the Cusco center for two months December 2005 and January 2006. When I was signing up I was told to pay as soon as possible etc but when I arrived I found that the school was closing in a week for 3 weeks...it wasn-t mentioned to me before!I never bothered asking for a refund as it never bothered me but during the three weeks we had to buy and cook our own meals. But, aside from that there seemed to be big communication problems between the administrative side and the Centers and there wasn-t enough resources to keep the centers running properly . As far as the kids went in our center there were no actual street kids but they were definitely underprivileged kids who needed schooling.
I still myself had a great experience but don-t highly recommend Bruce Peru- right ideas but poor execution

Ana Tere is alive. No question about it.
The question I have is has anyone ever been able to get a refund from Bruce Peru. I have paid for 12 weeks only to find that for 5 of these weeks there is no school, no meals and no Spanish classes. Has anyone else had a similar experience with this organisation. $490 a month for only room in Chiclayo is abit overpriced. Any comments...

I am amazed that he sent me and other people I know the same e-mail. If you are one of his "buddies" and did not recieve this, and yet he does not like me and sends it to me???????????????

Tre Strange!!! But this man is a very Strange man and as I said, it would not suprise me that he would saying something like this as a way to get more donation money from people

Regarding Bruce\-s wife: I was in Trujillo volunteering this summer and so I met Ana Tere (his wife) as she was based in that centre. It was clear Ana Tere was unwell and then, partway through my stay, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour and she and Bruce left for Lima. Staff at the centre who knew Ana Tere very well were very upset and shocked, so I am certain this was a genuine illness. The last update I heard was that the operation to remove the tumour had gone well and that they were returning to Trujillo. - This was a while back, - maybe a month or so. It is quite possible that there was a complication and that Ana Tere did not pull through, which would be very sad. What email did you receive and what did it say? I would like to know so that I can send my condolences if this is the case.

To explain to people who have not worked for Bruce Peru. Bruce Peru
Centres are not in any way educational divisions. The children do not get any qualification from being in a BP centre. The “idea†is to prepare them for school. This is not needed as any child can enter the Peruvian state education system regardless of their level. So after the children have been in a BP centre, yeah he pays for the uniforms, (which for 30 children is the equalivant of 2 months donation fee from one volunteer. The help stops there. So what happens the next year??

Does the situation of the families miraculously change and now they have money to send their children to school??

You decide!
