The Global Volunteer Network currently has opportunities to teach conversational English through our partner organization in Cambodia. This will allow you to help students improve their English skills while at the same time immersing yourself in urban Cambodian life.

Volunteers will be working as language teachers in a school project which provides affordable conversational English language courses for students. The aim of this project is to raise money for a local NGO working to improve livelihoods in rural communities in Cambodia.

We are a small foundation supporting a secondary school in a rural area of Cambodia near the legendary Angkor Temples in Siem Reap. We are looking for volunteer teachers, teaching assistants, gardeners, help with general maintenance etc...no fees and no experience necessary - just a willingness to help out for a few days. Please contact me at emilypotter@care2.com for more information.

Orphanages in Phnom Penh

A lot of tourists, it seems, want to visit an orphanage, play with the kids, volunteer, or donate. Sadly, there are people who want to exploit your humanitarian urge, just to make $ (tuk-tuk drivers, guides, etc.) The orphanages can’t stand up to this practice because guides and drivers are the only link they have to tourists whose support is vital for their good work. If you want the short version, here’s the moral: arrange a visit first on your own (no need for a driver/guide introduction), get to know the needs of the orphanage, and then donate according to these needs and your abilities.
The longer version:
I was taken to the Cambodian Light Children Association www.cambokids.org (see previous post) by a tuk-tuk driver associated with a guesthouse, who purported to bring me to “help the children”. My intention was to go see the orphanage, volunteer for a day or two, and probably donate to help their work. The driver, however, said that the kids mostly needed rice, and that in Cambodia, donations of money can be abused by the management. He told me that the common practice was to arrive at the orphanage with a bag of rice (a sort of entrance ticket), then you can get a tour and perhaps volunteer. He took me to a rice shop where I paid an exorbitant sum for a 50 kg bag of rice (no doubt later to be kicked back to the driver) and then dropped me off at the orphanage. There, I was greeted warmly by Kunthary, 17, a sort of liason who herself was raised there. Her English was great, and she took me to see the various facilities and explained the needs of the organization. Interestingly, rice was not needed. Kunthary explained that between 2 and 7 tourist groups visit every day… all bearing bags of rice. Other necessities like classroom supplies, sleeping supplies, toiletries, nutritious vegetables and meat, clothing, and gifts of cash were much more useful. Looking around, I could see why. 147 children shared a ramshackle structure, packed 8 to a “room”. The walls were falling down, exposing the sleeping areas to rain, insects and heat. I got there during dinner, where the kids had bowls of rice with a few specks of boiled vegetables on top. Despite the conditions, the residents of CLCA were cheerful. I met one girl, Nika, who gave her age as 13, but looked more like a 9 year-old developmentally. In her arms, she carried an unrelated infant boy whose parents had died from HIV/AIDS. Nika (through a translator) said that she liked going to school and that her favorite subject was French. She asked for our help to fund her continued education.

This was just one example of the level of need at CLCA. Luckily, it is not hard to find the place and it is within walking distance of the major guesthouse/hotel zone near the riverfront. If you come on your own, just follow this excellent map from their website: www.cambokids.org/visits.html Otherwise, write an email to patnoun@cambokids.org (the director Mr. Pat Noun) or call 016862206 or 016712193 from a local booth. I highly encourage you to visit this or another orphanage in the city, if only to see briefly the extreme stratification of Cambodian society. While the wealthy drive SUVs and live in mansions protected by armed guards, children who are the victims of a government providing no social services find themselves lucky to have shelter at a place like CLCA. If you have any questions, please contact me at nbarish@gmail.com or email CLCA directly. Also, if you have a good experience at this or another organization during your travels, give them some good press and help educate other travelers. Bringing visitors helps everyone- we get valuable insight into the structure of Cambodian society and the organization gets exposure and much-needed financial support. Enough Said!
