BOLIVIA VOLUNTEERS

Santa Cruz - Andres Ibañes - Bolivia

Only about 30 years ago, was a very small town with oxen pulling carts on the streets. The city was covered with mud in the rainy season and only the main plaza was paved.
Today, Santa Cruz became a metropolis of nearly 2 million people at 438 meters above the sea level that has developed fast unlike any other Latin American City. Since The Department of Santa Cruz borders Brazil on the east, there is a strong Brazilian presence in the area, especially in February during the Carnaval where an attractive parade takes place with beautiful woman wearing elaborate costumes often similar to the ones seen in the Rio de Janeiro Carnaval.
Crucenos, is how Santa Cruz residents are called, are very friendly, the tropical climate invites to visit the river Pirai where visitants and locals can find a good sample of Bolivian typical food, take a horse ride and enjoy the Bolivian bands playing around.
For those planning to travel to Bolivia and get involved in cultural activities, make local friends, develope skills, find a new carrier, and also experience a solidarity trip by helping locals, there are multiple options to volunteer while staying with a Bolivian family, a wide selection of projects to choose from, such as orphanages, teaching projects, conservation and ecology, playing at the Symphonic Orchestra, creative education, working with children with Down syndrome, sports coaching, protecting animals, working with deaf children and adults, etc. As part of a travel journey one can arrange one to one good quality Spanish lessons at a reasonable fee.

Lots of foreign volunteers arrive to Bolivia every month with a huge desire of making a difference in locals life and the number of Volunteer Opportunities increases more and more due the development of internet, but in most of cases what does really makes the difference is the volunteer's attitude, open mind and enthusiasm, be prepared to a culture shock that will in most of cases affect your enthusiasm during the first week or at least during the first days. However there are some considerations that may help you to take this culture shock smoothly and get the best of your volunteer experience.
It is obvious that you will be entering a new environment where much is unfamiliar. You will probably be disorientated at the start. Some people call this "culture shock". Experts have suggested that there are four stages of culture shock:
1. Initial euphoria
2. Irritability and hostility
3. Gradual adjustment
4. Adaptation
Almost everyone experiences culture shock to some degree. It can be frustrating and confusing. But there are positive steps that can be taken to minimize the impact.
v Realize that this is normal and that you will live through it.
v Be open-minded and ready to learn. You will come to realize that there are different ways to do things and that's okay.
v Research your new culture. You can begin today, reading as much as you can about the Bolivian culture that you will be experiencing.
v Look for logical reasons for behaviors in the new culture that you may find strange. With a little analysis, you may find that these different behaviors don't seem so strange after all.
Above all, flexibility, humility and open-mindedness will be the most valuable traits. These may have even been the key qualities that led participants to volunteer in the first place, so it should not be difficult.

I-ve spent three months in Cochabamba, Bolivia, through the Volunteer Bolivia organization, and have had a marvellous time. The people who work with VB were always very helpful and pleasant, and with time many of them, as well as the Spanish teachers who come there, became more like friends. The atmosphere of their "office" is just great, sometimes I would spend time there just for fun. The homestay program is great, I-ve grown quite close to the family I-ve lived with, the Bolivian people are mostly very open and very easy to get along with. It was an excellent time, for a big part thanks to Volunteer Bolivia.

Project Angels of Hope provides volunteer support for the ¨Fundacion
Angeles de Esperanza¨ which, since 1998, has operated a preschool and
medical/dental clinic for 2-6 year old children in the Chapare region of
Bolivia, home to some of the poorest people in South America.
Additionally, our volunteers offer assistance to the surrounding
communities through a variety of projects including latrine building and
health education. Beyond the satisfaction that helping others
brings, volunteers are provided accomodation and daily Spanish instruction
for a modest fee.

Volunteer Bolivia of Cochabamba is one of the oldest and most distinguished volunteer organizations in the country. They offer Spanish Language Classes, Volunteer Work, and Homestays with a wide variety of humanitarian and ecological organizations in Bolivia.
Unlike many fly-by-night start-ups, it is run by a dedicated, knowledgeable, and highly competent in-country staff with an attention to detail. I have nothing but high praises for the volunteer placement and ongoing support they have given me here in Bolivia.
