Andy,

This entry is right on. Not everything that is written should be intended to make everyone happy. No, I do not think this is the goal of writing. Rather, writing should make people feel the entire spectrum of emotions, as you say above. I feel that all too often people only expose themselves to writing, people, ideas that they agree with. This has the tendency to make them expect everyone to agree with them . . . and when they are finally exposed to a difference of opinion they become frustrated -- their idealistic bubble has been broken, their view of the world challenged.

This is good. This is what good writing should do. It is pointless to read something that just serves to reinforce a person's already established status quo. This does not make a person grow or learn more. to constantly build up your own ideas with that which you agree with is the equivilent of building yourself into a small cage -- there is no room for growth.

When people write you hate mail it is my impression that you hit them hard deep down. You ruptured a little hole in their cage of idealism. You made them think, feel, grow a little.

Good. They should thank you. When they lash out at you with hate mail, perhaps they are just trying to repay you the favor haha.

Hello Andy,

This is a very good, honest, first person account of Westerner living in an Asian culture. The statements you made could have been said by foreigners living long term in almost any east Asian country from Thailand to Japan . . .

Only you have the honesty to state them, whereas most people try to ignore their true feelings.

Good work, really, good work.

If you tie up the open side of the plastic bag after you smash it and then poke a hole in one of the corners, you can squeeze the milk into a cup and still drink it.

Thanks Andy,

This should help out a lot!

I had a little daydream about having a quiet, private place to abscond to and work for a few months but it is not looking like this will be the reality of it. I have turned up some temporary free living options, and if I were to combine them with trading the Hobohideout.com internet pages with hotels I can string together a way to live in NY without spending any money (and will probably be just as comfortable as if I had rented a $500 a month room in an apartment with people that I do not know).

I know that altering my living situation day to day and digging up all of the free, trade-for, and work-for accommodation that I can find would make for a better story, bring me in contact with more people, and give me a much fuller experience of New York City than having my own place. It would be like I never stepped off the Road. If I had my own place i am sure that my misanthropic tendencies would quickly kick in and I would find myself alone in my room with my face stuck inside of a book studying rather than being out talking to people haha.

So unless a miracle happens, and a private place pops up that my measely pocketbook can afford, I am just going to keep tramping.

If any readers know of a place where I can stay for even a few days - anywhere in New York - I will greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for the help.

Your friend,

Wade

Hello Andy,

Ubertramp is doing some scuba diving instruction on Koh Phi Phi.

He would probably love to meet up with you.

Maybe you can get some free dives out of it haha.

Just thought you may want to know.

Have fun,

Wade

Yes, good advice. If you continually ask about the price of something then the person that you are buying from knows that you are concerned about costs, and I found that they are much less likely to cheat you under these circumstances.

Wade Vagabondjourney.com commented about New Hobo Budget for Andy, On Monday June 23rd, 2008 03:15:00 AM

I think this is very wise, if for no other reason than the fact that you CAN travel the world on $10 a day.

Having budget restrictions also makes for more interesting travel, as you have to be clever with how to obtain what you need to live.

If you have the ability to just buy anything you want, I would think that traveling could become a little dull. Honesty, a pelethra of small buiness transactions throughout a day is not very exciting.

I think that even if I were very wealthy I would still travel the same as I do.

So I say stockpile the money. You are going to need it for when you put up Hobohideout Hostels all over the world. And I am going to need the Hobohideout Hostels for a place to sleep. haha.

Walk Slow and you don't spend any money,

This is truly a great post.

And as it is, there is not too much that I can add here other than the fact that I agree fully.

From another early riser, haha
