I entirely agree. I was on Facebook and have been message by people I know I do not want to message me. I can not understand the secruity settings, if there are any. However I was recently told that there are some new sites which work in closed safer environments. These do not bombard you with invitations and messages. You only invite who you want to.
The one I chose was called Finerday (at http://www.finerday.com). It appears to be a relatively new site and says it is adding more features. I am enjoying it and have added my children, who have added their friends as it is not an open networking site. I'm looking forward to their next features.
I am sure there must be more sites like this.
