Great post.
Another reason I don't like the idea of buying a vehicle is the expense of a carnet de passage.
I met quite a few people without one that had seriously time and financial issues at various borders.
Though, when ever I do see a motorcycle overlander I do seriously get envious!

I agree that RSS take people away from your / a website.
But I don't think getting updates via email makes much of a difference.
Personally I prefer RSS as I can view posts offline when in low bandwidth places. Take my time, enjoy.
I agree with part of a previous poster. Most subscribers RSS or email are regular readers, not the type to be clicking on your ads anyway.
They are the people that like to follow your adventures and listen to what you have to stay.
Most ad revenue comes from new people clicking on your site. At least in my opinion.
It's your choice Andy, and I wish you the best with whatever decision you make.
One point though, if you leave a url in excerpts at least then people can click to read the rest of you article. At the moment they cannot. Only via the header in some readers.
All the best, hope Africa is going well for you
Dave

Hi Andy,
As having lived in West Africa for over two years on my own search for home I can relate to a lot of what you are saying.
I think you are on the right path in finding people that can bring humor into your life when traveling solo.
Cultural differences are a lot different on the ground than on the TV reports. This I know, and I can relate to your current situation.
Sometimes - parts - of your posts are a little off the wall But, writing from some of the places youve been and under difficult situations e.g. Blackberry posting, dodgy cyber cafes etc. makes things difficult.
I know I find it hard at the best of times when I write things up, and reading back on my old posts I see countless spelling mistakes and grammar etc.
Travel like this is not the same as the guy staying in a plush hotel with a satellite connection and private car along with a driver waiting across the road.
I hope people see and understand this in your writing.
I wish you safe travels
Dave

Dont know about all i-phone plans, though unless its sim free your locked which in the Philippines means if you go outside the Philippines you are charged roaming rates by globe..
Personally I think $75 is too much by far. Ive never had a problem going into a new country buying a sim, and connecting via gprs, 3g or Edge. These days most mobile provider sim cards will install the settings automatically for you.
Currently I pay under $1 for 5 hours internet on mobile which suits me as any longer on mobile surfing email is too much. That kinda time should be on a pc. Which I can hook up to the phone should I want. Otherwise I pay for 30 mins which is perfect for quick checks.
