The best value airplane seat is getting the one you actually want. This is getting harder and harder these days with airline consolidation and economic hardship within the industry. A new frequent flyer tool has arrived: www.myseatfinder.com This new frequent flyer tool will actually find you a better airplane seat and then it takes the next step and books it for you. In fact, it'll keep searching for even better seats and keep upgrading you until it reaches your top choice (from a list of self-selected choices) or you check-in. You MUST have a frequent flyer account with the airline on which you have a scheduled flight.

Andy,
My intention was true in my discussion with my friend about why I thought you disliked tourist. I found it amusing and my friend and I discussed it an I relayed our feeling to you. You blog, therefore I comment. And I'm sure I feed my ego with some of my comments to you and other bloggers.
We share opinions and the world keeps spinning.
You have a good website and good blog. So I return and you make money.
I don't think I criticize you unfairly just to be mean. If you awake me with a post then I respond with my feeling. You have stated it bugs you when people criticize you or state your website is ugly. That I find truly amazing you let that bug you. You make plenty of money and are successful. But you are type A personality and will strive to be number one and then you will arrive and still be discontented (my ego feeling.)
You say to be successful find someone that is successful and learn from them. So I am here learning, but also interacting in my way. I also am aware that you have a psychology degree and you might be playing me like a fiddle.
But either way I enjoy you and others thoughts.
Count your blessings,

Now that is a damn good article. I see it happening in Lago de Atitlan, Guatemala (San Pedro.) Now that the lake is having the Algae bloom problem and tourism has taken a dive. Maybe a little anti-gringo sentiment from the locals. The dream is now a nightmare for foreign property owners. They want out and there is no way out, except by selling for a big loss.
But it is the foreign mentality that I must own the property to feel secure. In actuality it is more secure to rent. If the situation gets bad you just go down the road to the new and greatest and rent.

Yes you do have a great style of writing that mostly annoys me. But I enjoy it and come back for more. Currently I have the luxury of wireless internet for a couple days. Therefore I think I must go annoy Andy and have fun. But I learn a lot in the process.
You provoke me with your style of writing, so maybe I feel like I have to retaliate. But I do realize your are a human on the other side of the wire and truly don't want to hurt you.
So you say we can not destroy your calm. So that makes me feel good and I realize that it is a stimulating game called writing.

I think when I read your blogs is "this guy hates tourists with a passion." Did a group of tourist walk by you on the beach one day and kick sand on your blanket? Maybe print some t-shirts with "I hate tourist" and that might be bigger than the backpack.
Please do not respect tourist or write for them!!! Besides the niche thing (and good article), why the hate?
How is a tourist going to become a traveler if they are not welcome on your site? What is tourist gibberish anyways?
Are there any tourists in your current location? Can you identify them and take a defensive position before they cloud your mind.
Maybe after 12 years on the road, you are on the other side and I just can't see through the clouds.

I sure have no trouble talking to someone on a two week vacation and they might have some useful information. I meet people in cheap hotels on short trips.
If I had limited time and funds to go on a vacation I sure would go to your site and find a way to save money. You say I want to take hobo to the next level, but please shooo away if you are tourist. I think I would rather read "open to all" and "enjoy."

Andy,
A friend and I sitting over coffee in Perquin, El Salvador were discussing this post. I was telling him that you always are bashing tourists and that it seems counterproductive when you run a travel site. He stated that he thought your comments about disliking tourist was a sign that you are an elitist. I thought yeah maybe you are right about him being an elitist. So what is the deal. Do you think you are better than tourists, since you have been on the road so long? And what is wrong being a tourist?
I think any type of travel is good for a person and why belittle someone because they do not have the means to stay on the road for long period of time.
Tourist: a person who is traveling or visiting a place for pleasure.
Why so angry and frustrated when you have the good life? You are living the dream and escaped Haiti with your life. Seems you should be the happiest man in the world.

Andy,
I seriously doubt all these young women are working in these bars for the love of easy money. I guarantee that there is organized crime running a lot of these bars. Sure I know many clever women know how to exploit the sex tourist and give the sad story about needing money for surgery or starving family. Its pretty simple that the women work until their bar fine is paid and they have 24 hrs of freedom with their John. But break the rules and they are punished for not returning to there slave bar.
******You said: Dubai, Dubai, Singapore, Singapore, Hong Kong, Hong Kong, Japan, Japan, Korea, Korea.
Slavery is about having a person between a rock and a hard spot.
You are way off base Scott.
The women sign up to become cleaning ladies, they go to these countries listed above. The law allows their emplorer to get them thrown out of country, in big trouble with the law. The famly enslave the poor dumb girl or man.******
Yeah that is another form of slavery and probably even worse than the Philippines sex trade. But working for sex in the Philippines is being stuck between a rock and a hard place. Sell your body or starve. Its pretty simple. I stand by my opinion.
But whats really amusing is when they marry the girl and bring her back to the USA. Then the games really begin.
Anyways good luck.

Have you ever tried Blu Emu cream? I use it from time to time and it seems to help in about 3 days. Also I will sleep on a sleeping pad on the floor with a pillow under my knees. Occasionally I will take some ibuprofen to decrease my swelling.
I think chiropractors are good, but its hard to find a good one. They need to be strong to get a good crack in my opinion. Plus if you decide to give another one a chance take some ibuprofen before your visit so you are not so stiff and they can manipulate your spine better.
Now I think you will have to come up with a stretching routine that you will have to do the rest of your life. In my case it took about a month of stretching to start feeling some results.
You state you are chilling at the pool. Then I would say that is the best therapy for you. Do some in pool stretching and take ibuprofen. Rub in some Emu cream when resting. Get plenty of sun shine on your back. How about a hot bath? Find a legit massage parlor.
No way can you turn around 11 years of abuse in a short time. I say you are looking at 3 months to start feeling pain free.
Good luck

It was difficult to tell from your article whether YOU actually spent time in the P.I. or whether you copy/pasted from an article you referenced in the beginning. Either way, Id like to comment on/add to the article.
I am an American and lived 4 years in Manila from 1999 to 2003. I traveled to other islands some and paid close attention to the culture, with the intent to blend in better and offend less. For the first 2-3 months after we arrived I was really bothered by how defective and misguided the Filipino were. I remember looking for the good and thinking if only they could be more American theyd be great. In spite of myself, I made a few very close Filipino friends who had a lot of exposure to foreigners and were ale to see both sides of the coin culturally speaking.
When we only look at WHAT a person does but dont know the motivating factors behind WHY they did that thing we tend to decide what would have made US act that way and credit that person with those motives. #1 When we do that, we will always be wrong #2 we misjudge peoples motives and view them in a negative light #3 we live in a world that is a lie, that isnt real. This is why it is never acceptable to judge someones motives. No man knows the heart of another.
The maid who repeatedly asked for more minutes for her cellphone was not responding to utang na loob but to another cultural factor. I dont know a name for that but it is the perception that because you are rich and can easily afford it, then it is okay for her to ask you for it. Similarly, you may find poor people take things that are yours without asking. As Americans we call that What? Stealing. They do not see themselves as thieves. If they are neighbors or maids they did not see themselves as taking permanent ownership of it but rather indefinite use of it. To an American its all the same but to the Filipino it is not. Not at all.
The rich are fully expected to help the poor regardless of the nationality if that rich man. Since almost all foreigners are perceived as rich (since most who set foot on Filipino soil are, at least at that moment) they are looked to for handouts. It is important to treat these people with the utmost dignity and kindness. A response such as, Ohhh, Im sorry but I just had to pay ********* and I dont have any money with me. Im sorry. will go a long way and lets that person off the hook kindly and you havent actually said no. But the end result is the same for you. Not only will this keep you from creating enemies but you will feel much better about yourself.
Where you have to beware utang na loob is with the person who gives you a significant gift that seems very out of place. They MAY be setting you up for a favor. It may be nothing more than a little insurance policy on their part, just in case they need it, but it may be something more. Also be aware that when people bring you gifts they will expect it in return. Right, wrong or indifferent, this is the way it works, not only in the Philippines but in most of Asia.
Many times you can mess things up by giving someone a gift that (to them) is huge that they could never repay. They may feel indebted to you so deeply that they are ashamed to come around anymore and they may actually disappear on you.
The bottom line is that the Filipino people are the sweetest, most generous, most gracious people you may ever meet. When you watch them they appear very much in love with western culture and may even seem like American wanna bees but make no mistake. If they are Filipino, they are not American and you cannot expect them to think like or respond like an American. That doesnt make them wrong or less than, it just means they are not exactly like you.

Hi, I think the reason companies moved away from external frame bags is because external bags are inferior to internal frame bags. I don't think a external frame can compete in comfort and load balance with a internal frame bag. Plus internal frame packs are easier to secure. The closer you can get the load to your back and resting on your hips the better. I don't think your can do that with a external frame pack. Seems to me you would have to get into molded plastic frames to make the contour fit the human body? It's all about weight, comfort and durability in my humble opinion. I noticed Dana Design merged with Marmot which made some of the best bags in the business.
Good luck, Scott

The reason you are living in a concrete room with a light bulb in the middle and bad sheets is because you wanted a life less normal. Your kin folks are the only ones that truly care for you. They will be the ones who will always love you no matter what. I think when you travel, the locals see you as a money target. Their goal is to get your money in their pocket. You need to look at the nature around you. That is the real world. Rent a kayak and admire the earths beauty. Step away from that computer for a day. If it would make you feel any better, I woke up with my bottom sheet off the corner today. If that is your biggest problem, look in the mirror and give yourself a kiss. You are the richest person I know Andy(virtually speaking). I wonder if you will wake up tomorrow and get another day of your glorious life. I hope so, but it is not guaranteed. Andy, I think us readers do understand you are preparing for the next "on the edge" travel expedition. It takes lots of money(hobo money) and yet not having all the money you need "keeps you on the edge". Sometimes I think you are similar to "the beats", that generation of poets, writers and wanders(Kerouac, Cassady, Burroughs) who searched for freedom and adventure. In a way your a good book in progress. How it ends no one will know. Will you slip on the edge or regain your balance. The unknown is what really brings us to the edge of our seats. Your an artist painting a picture of a lone hobo wandering into the unknown. Searching for that "something" that we all think is out there, but no one can seem to find. Sure we don't mind reading about the price of "day old waffles" that tourists are paying. But in the end we envision corrupt border crossing, bribes paid, starvation, blood, motorcycle accidents, cold, loneliness, disease and survival. And its so easy to do sitting in a modern air conditioned kitchen in America. Let me shut up. Take it easy Andy.

Maybe you are thinking along the lines of "street smarts"? But then again we now have "ghost town" gated communities, because everybody bought a house they could not afford. All we really care about is what the stars are wearing and who said what on the Oprah show. But Andy why concern yourself with these trivial affairs and get back to some serious front line reporting of the world. Remember when you got back from Africa and you stated "I accomplished nothing". I think you were on the front lines then. We want blood (your blood). Take your friend on a truly memorable ride. Well I would have to think that most people on a two week vacation could care less of what they pay the street vendors. I think they feel "hey they might be ripping me off", but it is still super cheap, so I don't care. Sure it raises the price of everyday items for travelers, but for someone on a quick vacation they don't think about the cost of street vendor trinkets. Now for someone like yourself, you depend on getting the best price to stay in your yearly budget.

I always thought San Pedro was the worst. Now in Flores I noticed they have a extermination program setup to take care of the strays. Someone did tell me when it gets real bad in San Pedro they will put out poison bait to cull the population. You like to wander and soon become bored of your surroundings. What are you looking for anyways? If you wrote a list of all the things and places that made you happy and then you received them, you would still get bored of them. Maybe you need a place to hang you hat for awhile. Like opening your own hostel, which you've talked about. Create a living place, instead of this virtual world. Maybe your due for a real cold shower and a slap across the face. When you get to Africa it's going to be the same aggravations.
Now you know that feeling when you go and stay at your parents house in the USA. That sense of home. Sense of security. No body cooks as good Mom. Do you feel that? If you could create that feeling in your own hostel.
I tell you one thing hobo. When you go home this time to the USA. Better look at the people that love you and throw some of that love in your backpack. Cause when they are gone, there is not another chance. I took my mom for granted my whole life. Family is all you got and it's not forever.

Then within about 2 months you can turn it around, launch a new hotel site and now you have 10 times the amount of money you need to travel with. You did the same when you use to sell real estate. Must be something to do with that type A personality you talk about. Did you have the same passion for real estate that you have for travel? Do you see any signs of the aids problems. Like clinics that all these people are dying at. Is the problem hidden from the public or is it bad in a certain part of Africa? Can you find a clinic near you and post some pics of the clinic. I also read that a lot of children are orphans now, because their parents are dead. Have you come across any orphanages? If we are spending all these billions of dollars on the problem. Is it just a scam and some fat cat is pocketing all the money. Maybe Walmart is the answer to all problems in Africa. Hey Andy you are right on about the story with the Lady Who works at the Amazona's Airlines office. I was just down in Bolivia for the whole month of June. I love the people especially the more native people like the Quechuan. The women are really shy and don't like you taking their pictures. I don't blame them. The rest of the civilized world has just used them and doesn't do much to help.
