Depending on how the water works there, you could have several variables. It could be that many different places have different wells and every well will be different building to building or area to area. It is not really a matter of where you are in the world though since nastiness is everywhere. My brother in law has gross water at his house and come to find out, his well is only 60 feet deep and only about 50 feet from the neighbors septic system! That is in the U.S. too... Stupidity is universal and not solely subject to the poverty of a place.

Wow, that is a great way to look at it. Every time I have traveled, I have never thought of that too much since I can rarely spend more than a couple of weeks where I go. I can imagine that makes a world of difference though. When my wife and I travel, we often ditch the tourist things in favor of local flavor, but we have always stayed in tourist areas. The neighborhood there is almost always American or western European and... Well... boring. Of course I am not sure how one would go about finding about a neighborhood before visiting a place. Any tips?

Sweet! That is a pretty nice motorcycle. I am sure that you will get a lot of use out of it and it should help your "golf game" a bit too. :)
How much does gasoline cost there (USD)?

The eBay feedback system USED to work really well because the seller could leave feedback for the buyer too. You can't do that with a Hotel. You can't do that with eBay any more for that matter...
With hotel sites there is not really a way to correct a problem quick enough. I would imagine that there are many people that have a not so hot experience and do not talk to the management about it at the time and just talk about it on a place like tripadvisor.com or something.
Once this comment is posted, the hotel has no way of fixing it and then everyone that reads it will assume that is just how things are until enough good comments push the poor comment "below the line" so that it can not be seen so easily. the hotel could then (potentially) loose business because someone was having an episode of PMS...
I agree that there are likely 1000 happy campers to every mad person, so it seems to me that another question is "how do you get a happy person to review a hotel"?
