Hey HT,
Love the story. I traveled via land from Kenya to South Africa back in 2001 and it was the same-same. Busking musicians would hop on, trips took much longer than expected, and (in Tanzania anyway) wed have to stop and let elephants cross the road.
Buses seem a little more expensive than I remember them....

Moving to Bali soon - maybe well meet up sometime! Thanks for your tips and motivation! :)
