It seems to be that way: I once took a course in California, which had as a subtiltle or summary experience statement of the course: " I used to be different, now I am the same". -- A freeing experience to come to say this, which is hard to come to.

I gather that the need to appear different is a from of rightousness maybe? Maybe we are afraid not to be noticed, to disappear if we are not distictly recognizable? Good questions to ask.

Andy, for sure I appreciate your curiosity about people and things and your thinking about it. And, thanks for sharing it all.

Andy, I completely understand your quest to acknowledge people in your world around you. When I was kid growing up in my little town of Luebeck the man would great a woman by slightly lifting their hats for a moment and slightly bowing and saying Guten Tag.

Here in California now it appears to be less and less common to greet the people you encounter. I used to train myslef to be present for people coming my way and to greet them and smile at them. It is very hard to keep this up when everybody just wants to ignore you.

Andy, thanks for the reminder to care for people around you.

..What is really sad is that people get so upset about someones opinion that they forget all the goos things their mother taught them such as proper language. What do these people think they accomplish with this kind of language, violant language which will just disqualify them as crazys.
I hope this anonimous guy reads this and has the courage to think for one moment.

romantico commented about London Bombers - Are they the Devil, On Thursday July 7th, 2005 03:00:00 PM

I was pleased to see the last comment. It is not right to blame Islam for all these things judt because this group of people is professing to be of Islam. Just like with the christian religions there are always different sects and splintergroups who want to be more radiacl or fundamental jsut as is ocurring in the Jewish relm and the Christian realm. We have something like the Christian right and its folowers whos people have killed abortion doctors etc. (everybody knows about such people). This will not have us condem all of Christianity. I think such generalizations are really short sighted and not thoughtful. It is always easy to generalize and just to condem. Well, this is what we humans like to do I guess.

Thoughtful people and people who think on their own are not the kind of people we are rearing in the world.

I always find it necessary to distinguish the actions of people in the name of a religion from the religion itself. Religion was always used to justify all kinds of evil.
Religion alweays gets hikjacked to give legitimacy to all kinds of enterprise.
It is a very powerful justification because it will always speek to a lot of people.

This could also be some kind of silo for storing grain or potatoes. Ther seems to be an acess at the top with a stairway on the outside, which silos often seem to have.
Who knows what this is.

This structure reminds me of a bomb shelter which Germany had many of. They are often built above ground. But they should normally be constructed in high density population areas.
This one definately looks like concrete and I never saw windmills constructed from concrete.

romantico commented about Latvia Boy Hitchhiked Iraq, On Friday July 1st, 2005 03:26:00 PM

Hitchhiking in Iraqu sounds too crazy and actually suicidal to me, but maybe there is something I do not know about how safe it is on the roads of Iraque. Hard to belive, but Ansy please let us know what you hear about this guys adventures.
My first reactin is to think that this guy is how we say in germany spinning "Sailors Yarn" which means in German "Seemann's Garn" spinnen.
This means a story to simply impress the listener. I am quite sceptical i guess.

Andy,

What a pleasure to follow you around. Thank you for being so straight and generous with your thoughts. I ran into your blog searching things about Bangkok and then found your accounts about Bangkok. Now I am folowing you wherever you go.
I was touched by this latest post. Talking about being a grain of sand and insignificant. How true this rings for me.

I was also touched by the account of people lacking simple ways to show respect etc. I am from germany, and I am particularily hungry for the simple signs of acknowledgemnt from people here in California where I live.

I think it is better to live with the kind of rigid mannors of a gentleman even often automatic than being around people who simply never got this kind of training to respect and acknowledge people around you.
I think that fomality makes life easier.

Andy just know that we do love you and your sharing of your thoughts.

Chris in California
