I was in the hospital last year at Makati Med center. They seem to have an excellent staff and it was easy to understand everyones english. The cost for a private room was about 1700 php. It was slightly cheaper than the hotel I was staying at. I had a complete cardio workup and had surgery on my hand. I also had a root canal while I was there. I would go there again if I need elective treatment as it was a better experience than some of the places in the US.

Why dont you buy a green coconut? They taste so much better and are easier to open and the juice is fresh.

Another trick ive seen is bad bottled water in other countries. The trick is they will re-fill an empty bottle with tap water for to make a profit, so any time you buy a 1L bottle of water at a store, give it a squeeze to make sure the seal has not been broken. This is something i have seen in India, in a small town where we were buying water and we had two bad bottles brought to us,both of which leaked at the seal and the waiter said he would go find one that was good, and he did. Just something to keep an eye for, especially where your in hot climates where water is sold in large quantities to tourists.

Andy do you use the metal cup security thingies? I found it in thailand its a metal cup that goes over the door knob of your room when you leave you put a padlock through two loops at its base and no one can then get into your room the cup covers the part where the key goes in and the padlock stops the cup from being removed. Cost about 8 dollars and worth its weight in gold.

Rob commented about RSS Feeds is Being Removed, On Monday March 9th, 2009 03:48:00 AM

Andy I don't use email newsletters anymore, I unsubscribed most of them, I use email only for contacting friends and family something I think it is best designed for. RSS is the *best* way of getting notified that new content is available for your site. Can I strongly suggest you leave the RSS feed enabled but just put the title of the posts in not the content. If you do that you get the best of both worlds, people get notified when the site is updated and will visit the site if they like the sound of the post. I'd strongly suggest you'll get more traffic doing it like this than removing the feed all together.

Rob commented about RSS Real Sucky System, On Saturday March 7th, 2009 01:53:00 AM

Do what everyone else does Andy, only post a teaser and not the full content. You post so much stuff and so regularly that I suspect people pick and choose what they want to read when they're using rss so using a teaser will just give them a greater sample of what your talking about, not the whole thing, they'll then click through to your website.

I think someone who's both good at design, writing and at the technical nuances of load balancing and multi server setups are a rare breed andy.

But you can most likely hire someone to design such a thing.

There are certainly people on rentacoder.com and similar sites which have track records in such work since as you say it's fairly specialised, better to have someone who does it everyday build the perfect solution?

Rob commented about I Drank One Drop of Water, On Thursday May 1st, 2008 10:49:00 PM

My personal theory about local water is that the body can handle the bacteria living in a small amount of water for example when you brush your teeth, wash your mouth out e.t.c even a quick gulp isn't a problem because the quantity of water and hence bacteria is small enough for the bodies own defenses to overwhelm even though it's not used to it. If you drink alot of water in one go, especially if your dehydrated your body needs that water and it won't have time to neutralise all the bacteria in such huge quantities.

Personal theory based on drinking some water in Thailand one time :) No Scientific research done whatsoever but might make sense?

Rob commented about Waiting on Windows Explorer, On Thursday April 10th, 2008 10:40:00 AM

Andy, when you see a list of files in explorer, each one can have a different icon, all those icons are embedded inside the file itself or there is a system wide one held somewhere, the computer has to go through and grab them all index them and display them, this is especially bad for pictures because it will often make a little thumbnail. Even if you don't use a thumbnail type view in explorer if you have the preview pane on the side it may still do this, and if you have subdirectories it may well go down and grab the bitmaps for those as well. All that is hitting the disk and so it slows things down. A defrag would probably help as it would reduce the amount of time the hard drive spends seeking, speeding up the entire process.

Im glad you enjoyed your visit to the phils. It is not what other countries think about the phils. There are lots more for you to see in that side of country. I am planning on retiring there, hopefully soon and take care of the farm which is on another island and the view from the beach is unforgettable in my mind since i was a kid. it is soo peaceful and thats what i miss the most.
