At the Viet Nam War Remnants Museum in Saigon, they state that 3 million Vietnamese died.

Not sure if that is true or not.

Very strange, but i was just watching news here in Manila and they say a side of Merapi slid away or something (??) - so then I go over to your blog, wondering if Andy Hobo made it back to see Merapi.
I've had the "book" jumping off the shelf to me experience myself btw.

Have you been to Serbia?

Not sure how to search your archives to find out.

BTW, appreciate your blog so much, and so glad you are not like most of the other male global blogs that are obsessed with posting what I call soft porn images.

Nice to know my grandmother and nieces would feel safe reading your travels!! Thank you!!

Merry Christmas (belated) and Happy New Year.
I think you got it right: "The Devil tries to make a good person argue or leads us into temptation to argue with the bad people".

It is better to just walk away, because there is no reasoning with the bad.

Peri commented about Expats in Philippines, On Monday December 12th, 2005 12:22:00 PM

Wow, Andy, too bad I won't be there with my mr. expat until Dec 18 or so...
The American Women's club of Manila is quite good, and they have a website and schedule of their handicraft bazaars they put on which are very popular.
Yeah, there is the crowd that does not just "drink". Families live in Ayala Alabang Village, guarded gated community - Expats rent homes there in Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila. Or they live in Makati City high rises. There is a Church in Makati City also where a lot of expats go........ Union church of Manila I think? They have a website also, and a drop in center and library, you can hang out and have coffee.
good luck and don't get too wet.

maybe you could ask se asia travel writer Carl Parkes for some tips. His email is friskodude@hotmail.com
He is in SFO, but I think he's also planning to see Palawan in the future.
His weblog is http://friskodude.blogspot.com/

this is his about me: "Carl Parkes
Location:San Francisco
Travel writing has been my primary employment over the last 15 years, in which I have authored six guidebooks to Southeast Asia published by Avalon Travel and National Geographic. Previously, I worked as a stockbroker at Dean Witter in San Francisco and traveled around the world. -- I was born into an Air Force family and spent my childhood in California, Nebraska, Alabama and Japan, where my love of Asia began. After graduation from UCSB, I traveled around Europe and returned to work in Hawaii, Lake Tahoe, Aspen, Salt Lake City, and finally, San Francisco, my current residence. -- I once made a 12-month journey across Asia, from Japan to Sri Lanka, then returned home to work as a stockbroker. I later shifted gears and plunged into the perilous world of travel writing, churning out five guidebooks for Moon Publications and a Thai guide for National Geographic -- I've lectured on a half-dozen cruise ships, and won two Lowell Thomas Awards from the Society of American Travel Writers."

p.s. the longer you are in RP, the angrier you may become, because it is near impossible to get anything done.
Those expats you read that say,
"oh you can live like a king in the philippines".......I don't think that is an accurate picture of reality.

Peri commented about Indus International, On Friday December 2nd, 2005 09:50:00 PM

oh oh oh......hey, my husband is an expat there........ oh boy.......banking in the Philippines is the biggest bucket of stress you will ever encounter.

bee careful....... remember Andy, those smiling faces that act like your best friend..........only are acting that way because they want money.

My mr. expat had to have documents, letters from work. He had to have a relocation representative from his company take him to the bank....
a lot of tagalog and smoothing.
I think a lot of greasing of the palms go on to get real results in the RP

you should find an expat to help you, maybe. ??
try some services (Prudential)?
good luck.

oh and when it is holidays.....good luck finding an atm machine with any money left, especially around paydays.

making a deposit into your bank account is also awful.. They may freeze funds for over 30 days.........this happened to my mr. expat who had a bank account.

Peri commented about Why am I Grumpy, On Tuesday November 29th, 2005 06:26:00 PM

haha, being in the pHilippines with all the craziness was enough to make me want to go nuts.
There is no understanding no logic of the place. The saying, "only in da Philippines" i think is their way of laughing at it all.
enough to make me want to drink over there.
Will you stay over for the holidays there? They go crazy for new years.....with fireworks that would be illegal in the U.S, shooting of guns...

Maybe RP is making you crazy, haha.
:)
be safe
i'm headed over there for winter break.

Did you see the Merlion, ride the boat down the river? I think there is an Asian musuem.
There is botanical gardens, orchid gardens, zoo.
A big shopping area.....

And , oh the clubs.....at night!!
That is why it seemed to me people were very skinny and no one was awake and out and about during the day, I think they party all night or something.

Good luck, sorry for the long comment here.

I'm laughing at your post because it reminded me of some of the kids I saw in the Philippines..... just pestering you for a handout. I wrote to my American retired school teacher Aunt about this, and she said, "They should teach those children to be polite", haha.
I suspect the average American has no clue what the rest of the world is like.
