Patrick Shields commented about RSS Feeds is Being Removed, On Wednesday March 11th, 2009 05:02:00 PM

I agree with Ash. Now that your articles no longer pop up for me on my home page (which reads RSS feeds of my favorite sites), I will read less articles.

Also, all successful bloggers that I know of offer RSS.

I think the fact that you don't post photos of yourself sets you apart from a lot of other bloggers. I think the fixation on one's faces can be detrimental. Nevertheless, if you feel comfortable posting photos now, I think you should do it.

I agree, the blog layout is much more intuitive!

Patrick Shields commented about Travel Blogs Drive Me Crazy, On Friday January 2nd, 2009 01:11:00 PM

This is interesting Andy. I'm glad you're going to improve the appearance of your blog and divide it into sections.

My friend Christian traveled for a while and one of the ways he paid for it was by posting specific expenses (tickets, etc.) on his blog and having people offer to pay for them and receive attribution for it.

I'm trying to think of ways that you can make money without using ads... I will never buy something from an ad but I'd love to give back some of the value I've gained from your blog.

I guess the way I will help is by referring to you from my blog, pshields.net. It runs Wordpress and as you can see, I pay a lot of attention to the appearance. I think the challenge is to use the appearance to complement the text but not take over. The point is to use the blog's appearance to help draw attention where it needs to go.

I submitted an application to work for you several months ago but never heard back. Probably because I live in the U.S. and so I charge too much. But if you ever want any advice about blog appearance or how to do something, send me an email. I'll answer it free; it's another way of giving back value for what I've learned from your blog.

Hi Andy, I've continued reading your blog though I haven't commented lately.

My tip request is: What should I buy to start out becoming a traveler? All I can think of is a duffel bag, a day pack and a lighter laptop, but I'm sure I'm missing things. I live in Kansas City and have a passport. I have basic hygiene stuff like toothpaste and shampoo. I have a bivy sack and a small inflatable mattress pad (so I can sleep in the wild.) I don't have a burner for cooking or very good clothing. Is there anything that a regular person wouldn't think about that is necessary for traveling (in both the short and long term?)

Thanks a lot! I still enjoy the blog.

Patrick Shields commented about Cookie Cutter Websites are Destroying Mine, On Friday October 24th, 2008 07:15:00 AM

I disagree. I use Wordpress (blogging CMS) for my site and it really just makes it easier to do everything that I would normally do without a CMS.

Google wants people to find the best results. Google's not going to be biased against sites using CMS if those sites have the most value. As long as you're doing the SEO, it doesn't matter whether you're using CMS or not.

At the same time, I am developing my own system for other projects as well. I just think CMS have their place and should be used appropriately.

After reading your blog for a while, I have realized how intelligent you are. It took me a while to get past the improper grammar, but you are more knowledgeable about the stock market and the direction society is moving in than most people I know.

So I don't let the word "hobo" affect my perception of you. :)

Well, you have more experience than me, but in my experience government is bad. In any situation people can find an agreement without having to bring guns and force into the equation. If we had no government, there would be a lot more money around to send to charities or directly where it is needed, instead of giving it to politicians who use it for political gain.

If most people are good people, then we don't need government. If most people are bad people, than how can government (elected by the majority) do good?

Patrick Shields commented about Live and Left Live Policy, On Thursday September 18th, 2008 09:43:00 PM

I totally agree with you Andy, "live and let live" is a libertarian motto.

A lot of people in government want you to pay for other people's failures (while they take a cut for themselves.) But I truly believe that people are entitled to all of the fruits of their labor... And that means that things like income taxes shouldn't exist. Neither the Republicans nor Democrats believe in that motto, they are all for bailouts and social programs.

Recently, the four third-party presidential candidates got together and told the press of four main issues they agreed on, that the two major parties don't. They are:

1) Withdraw the troops from Iraq.
2) Repeal anti-privacy legislation such as the P.A.T.R.I.O.T ACT.
3) Eliminate the federal reserve (who can print money out of thin air) and return control of the money supply to Congress.)
4) Stop increasing the national debt.

Neither party represents the best interests of hobo travelers. If you vote, I would recommend voting for anyone besides Obama or McCain!

Patrick Shields commented about Who to Vote For President of the USA, On Thursday August 28th, 2008 07:08:00 AM

The president can have an impact on your life through taxes. Obama would raise the highest tax bracket from 35% to 39%. I have no idea if you make $250,000 a year or more, but I think raising taxes on the rich will have major consequences over time regarding prices. Rich people are the lifeblood of the economy, and to tax them more is to decrease creativity and innovation. Obama will take us out of a capitalist society. McCain will delay our exit by lowering taxes but decreasing our debt. I support Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party nominee, who would lower taxes and decrease the size of government, helping to usher back in a capitalist society.

If USA becomes socialistic, I'm out of here. I want to be able to keep the fruits of my labor without being held up at the point of a gun.

Patrick Shields commented about Getting Ready to Change Computers, On Sunday August 24th, 2008 02:41:00 PM

I keep everything important in the My Documents folder. Most programs can always be downloaded whenever you change computers, so I just keep a text file with a list of the programs I use. The only additional step is to export my firefox bookmarks into My Documents, because I've spent a good bit of time organizing them.

Patrick Shields commented about Making Maps Fit on Pages, On Friday August 22nd, 2008 10:26:00 AM

Andy, here is one alternative that may also work.

1) View the part of the map you want on maps.google.com
2) Click the link button and it will create a link to the map.
3) Put the code in your blog and adjust the width and height.

This gives the reader much more control, as they can zoom in or move around on the map.

The blog won't allow me to post the code but I'm sure this would also work. Just adjust width to 680 and height to about 800 or so and you've got a great, scalable, movable map on the blog.

Patrick Shields commented about Spammed by Check out my Facebook.com profile, On Tuesday August 19th, 2008 07:09:00 PM

Facebook tries hard to not be spammy. The reason you have to sign up is not because it's viral marketing, it's for privacy; on facebook, the default privacy setting only allows your friends (who are logged in) to see your profile.

If you don't like facebook, you can add a rule to your email spam filter to filter out all email from facebook.com. I tried to find your email address but I couldn't, so I don't know what type you use, but I use GMail and it allows me to do that easily.

I recommend getting a facebook. It is not full of spam at all; it's a great way to interact with your friends. You are one of my role models and I think it would be awesome if you had a facebook. Another traveler whose blog I read, Christian, has a facebook, which I think is pretty cool. You can always set privacy settings to change what people are allowed to see.

I hate spam too, but Facebook's not bad at all.

Patrick Shields commented about Computer Data too Big for Virus Program, On Tuesday August 12th, 2008 10:05:00 AM

It sounds like you have a nice computer, so I agree; it must be the half-million files.

I think an external hard drive would work best. If you moved all your old files to that, it would presumably speed up the scans.

I have high speed internet here in the U.S., so I like my method of uploading the files to a hidden portion of my website via FTP. Of course, if you're using free wifi, somebody could always steal your data.

I don't think a scan should take that long. Are you using an old computer?

My favorite virus software is AVG free edition, and it never runs that long. Here's the link.

I am trying to figure out the best solution for storage as well. I have about 20 gigs of data. My plan is to zip the important folders and upload them to a private part of my website once a week in case I ever lose my laptop. I had an external hard drive, but it really just got in the way.
