It's called Brown Nosing. I have worked in the N. East, America's best universities and I can tell you straight out that if we are given a million dollar grant to find out if African tribesmen contributed to Icelandic cuisine we will find it or greatly interweave fact and fiction with more fiction or else we simple can not get a grant in the future to look for what we want like learning what earth's temperature was 1,000-5,000,50,000years -300 million years etc. by core sampling remote spots that cost money.
P.S. The earth was much hotter 300 million years ago. If their were people alive with thermometers they would concur with out theses.

We have a love hate relation with Al Gore. He does help raise money for us in the industry. However his uneducated fans want the conclusions that are not what we come up with so we sometimes bend the info so they will accept it and keep contributing. It still lets them see that global warming is true. It is at least for another 50-150 years. Yes It does cause more snow in Europe and southern USA. It will change again and again. Sometimes it is Global warming and sometimes global cooling. (Google Global Cooling 1973 NY times)
It is simple really. One life cycle begins another ends, sometimes very slowly in human terms.
Will turning off a Billion lights help cool the earth ? YES ! Just like blacktop in a city helps keeps a city a few degrees hotter than the forest 100 miles away forest.
every time you conserve it helps but not for long. Blink of histories eye.

P.P.S. love your travel blog. Hoping you will keep up the Africa travel for a while. I love it so much having been there and having to lie about how wonderful the culture was and how much I learned from the people.
I did not learn a dam thing. It was hell interacting because everything I tried to help with was used to sell me something or distract me to steal something from me. However it was such a great laboratory to work in my trade I would do it again despite the rancid corruption and the ripoffs of the cities.
I do have a few good memories of Africa. Mostly the Africans who saw me as the first white person in their lives and that I was NOT EVIL. They where very gracious and somewhat scared. A great feeling to me and it seem special and somewhat magical that I was a modernday Dr. Livingstone in my own mind !!!!!!
