Sorry you lost a friend. Death is always tragic for the ones left behind. I believe in the Triune God and know when I die I will be with God in heaven....a much better place.
I can't recall how I stumbled upon your blog. Certainly you are an adventurous individual. Thank you for posting your adventures on this blog. You are in places I would never visit. These places intrigue me however: the people, the culture, the history, the environment. I enjoy reading about them, and seeing pictures of them.
I have a friend who will be going on her third dental mission trip to Machu Pichu (sp?) with a group from Canada called Kindness In Action (KIA).

Odds of being in an airplane crash increase simply by being in an airplane, flying through the sky.
Planes crash. Cars crash even more frequently. Do the odds change your travel plans?
Not for me. I don't travel in airplanes often. When I do I enjoy the take off and the landing the most and don't give a thought to crashing. I do travel the highway daily......despite the high incidence of car crashes.

Much of the Bible is difficult to understand. The Ten Commandments are clear but appear not to provide the parameters. Here is where Theologians enter to help lay people better understand God's Word. Martin Luther explains each of the commandments in Luther's Small Catechism "The Fifth Commandment/You Shall Not Murder......54. What does God require of us in the Fifth Commandment?
A. We should help and support our neighbor in every bodily need." Romans 12:20 is quoted.
"B. We should be merciful, kind,and forgiving towards our neighbor.
Matthew 5:5,7,9;Matthew 6:15, and Ephisians 4:32." are quoted.
We are instructed to be kind, loving toward others. To provoke argument, discension amongst people is sinful.
The child, you mentioned, who causes his parents to argue is also breaking the Fourth Commandment. As parents we are to train up a child. That is part of our job.
We are all sinful;even children. As a result we all need God's grace of salvation. This He has already given to us freely.
A question on your succesful sobriety: How did you do it? The reason I ask is because my sister-in-law struggles with alcoholism. She went through the 12 step program. Her sobriety lasted a year. She is drinking again. Very sad for the whole family.
Thank you for sharing your past addiction. I know it has nothing to do with travel. But do know by sharing this information you may be helping others. I suspect it didn't suck energy out of you to share. On the contrary it is therapeutic. Enjoy your stay with your family

Here in the States, I have moments like the one you wrote about. The reality in the present moment cant be read about or heard about or seen on TV. You know, it is sort of like what is happening in Iran. No one talked about how the people of Iran felt or what was in their hearts. It wasnt in a book or talked about on TV or on Radio. Well, now we know.
I have only been out of the USA one time and that was to go to Rocky Point in Mexico. That little experience was not even a blip on the map compared to what you do. I just wonder if you are at a disadvantage because you are an American. People may be more suspicious and you are already a target because you are a foreigner. Does staying in a community for a long duration help establish a healthy trust?
I enjoy your blog and look forward to the book you might write in the future!

For a person that "supposedly", knows allot about Thailand, and India ,
I Wonder why you know so little about there med tourism , its much much bigger then the Philippines and much better.
For a traveler that really seems not to like the philippines you sure are spending alot of time there. WHY?? Could YOU become one of the over weight, gal chasing expats ? maybe you found a home.
