Hey Andy, I've been reading your site for a little while and really dig it. My wife and I are about to embark on an extended trip- around a year long 4-5 continents.
For now, I just wanted to drop you a quick note to say that I'm diggin the site- it's helping us get a feel for places through your eyes.
Oh, and if it helps, I wrote something a while back about wikis that you might enjoy...

You know I couldn't help looking for some Hannibal info. Wikipedia has a bunch of great info:

From what I've seen, he spoke a form of Hebrew, FWIW...

I researched this quite a bit recently and I came to the conclusion that we would get an "unlocked" GSM phone and then buy prepaid SIM cards for each country. As long as the phone is unlocked, you should be able to switch out cards when needed.
This way, you get local calls, local roaming and free incoming calls in a lot of places. Unfortunately though, it means having inconsistent phone numbers.
I saw a lof of information on Telestial: http://www.telestial.com/
A satellite phone would be rad, but expensive I imagine, like any single plan would be world-wide.
Good luck Andy!

Hey Andy, I really appreciate that you put your thoughts and feeling right out there. It takes courage.
I just want to echo that an UNlocked phone is the way to go, from what I've learned. I've not been through it first-hand, but with an unlocked phone you are supposed to buy prepaid SIM cards and get access in each country (and a different number).
In the US you can buy unlocked versions of a lot of phones (I have an unlocked Palm Treo 650). Often, the unlocked phones are more expensive because they are usually tied with a voice plan. Some carriers will unlock them for you, sometimes after 60 days or something similar.
Andy- does your phone have a camera? If you're a member of Flickr, you can upload photos easily from a cell phone and it them posted directly to your blog too. Real time.
Anyway, safe travels to ya...
~Lee
