Hi Andy,
I disagree that Europeans are more racist than the people in the USA. If we just keep it to current affairs (forget Hitler, for now, and the USA particpating in the slave trade until the mid 1880's).
Stastics show that in the USA, people of colour, do less well, than indiginous whites. Much the same as in Europe. These issues suggest implicit racism. That you have a black president, is a great thing, not because he is black, though it is a great step forward, in the fight against inequality of opportunity. As an ethnic minority, and as the man he is, Obama may be able to promote peace,
If Obama is a man of character, he will make his decisions according to his consience, rather than any European accolade handed to him. I feel this may yet be more of a move by Europe to show respect for a man, who we hope, stands for a level of Government, Bush was incapable of administrating, either abroad, or in the USA .
The greatest chance of peace may come if the USA has at least reasonable relations with other countries in the world, and their president is respected as a man of honour..
The very fact that 9/11 happened, the Iraq War and the Afghan War, Iran and Korea built nuclear devices, and there were numerous instances of terrorism around the world, doesn't not give credance to the notion that Bush was capable of averting conflicts. Obama might be able to clear up some of his mess, and at least is making all the right noises he will try.
I would suggest that to have credibility, when you accuse a continent of racism, you have statsitics at your disposal which suggest a measure of objectivity. Unless of couse you are simply, cold, wet, in a bad mood and spouting your mouth-which you are free to so. Just let us know not to take you too seriously, if that's the case.

Andy, Thanks for this eye-opener.
I have not been to the Philippines, but I have a trip to Thailand planned for this fall.
I think that you are indeed correct when you say "They will marry the fattest, stupid, drunken American to leave the country." That presents an entirely set of new issues.

This really makes me laugh.
Typical as is the difference between men and women. If my husband and I get lost I always want to ask for directions and he always says, no we can figure it out, or something similar.
Usually one to two hours later, we'll stop somewhere and I'LL GET OUT of the vehicle and ask while he pretends he is doing something really important in the vehicle ... like staring out the other window.
