Hmmmm: Tanzania, the home of Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro National Park, Lake Manyara, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Amboseli, etc. etc. And you call it a wasteland? Give me one break!!! If you rode a bus through your homeland, would it travel through the best part of your country? No - bus routes and trains usually go through the areas that are the poorest. Don't judge Tanzania by your bus trip. I went by bus from Mwanza to Shinyanga to Kahama then by train to Dar Es Salaam. Sure the land was dry, but the people were warm and friendly.
You should read What is the What, the story of one of the lost boys of Sudan. Thank heavens for refugee camps for those people and those of Rwanda and Burundi. Although located in dry, unfriendly land, they provide safety from genocide. Unfortunately, the host countries have a hard time absorbing the refugees - it's hard enough to support their own citizens. It would be wonderful if those camps were not the final residence for refugees. The world needs to recognize the horrors so many in the world have to endure - especially in Africa.
I suggest you read about the countries you travel through, including the histories of them, before you make the quick judgements you have made on this post. It'd be a great way to spend your time waiting for slow buses.
