I have heard about this practice. It is most likely one of their countrymen who is turning these donations into a business. That person probably justifies it as "putting food on their table," but is invariably taking it off of someone else's. There is a way to stop it however. Due to this I have recently only donated to charities that I know directly distribute to the people recieving the benefits. The next step is education, this is a harder issue, because in many countries (the US included) the government doesn't want the people to know.

Interesting post I find your comments on your bag and the professor interesting. In both cases I kind of feel like saying "and so?!!" Obviously in both cases the people are interested otherwise they wouldn't be reading. Anyhow, would personally take mentally deranged if it meant I got to travel and not be stuck in a cubical all day. As it is though, I have not yet broken free from my personal delusion of "a good life." Anyhow, have fun in Haiti.

I guess someone, somewhere must of given me a trick quarter. I keep getting tails. Oh well, if I am going to be stuck somewhere I guess California isn't that bad of a place to be. If it is any consolation I do get limited visitation to the rest of the world on the weekends! :)

Be careful when picking out the large prawns for cooking at the restaurants, often times, they will substitute them for smaller ones as soon as your back is turned.
Class example of this happening is in Cebu next to the Magellan Marker. Andy is far, far north of this area, but it will happen everywhere and it is always prudent that you watch them cook what you pick out and not simply retire to a table with a San Miguel and wait to be served.

John commented about TENS Therapy for 5 Dollars, On Wednesday September 9th, 2009 08:20:10 PM
TENS therapy has worked well for me in the past, the premise is that the electrical simulations "fool the brain" into thinking there is no pain. The device Andy pictured is a portable unit that people can clip on a belt buckle or slip into their pocket and you wear it around for most of the day, adjusting the intensity and phase of the current. USA insurance companies will pay around $800 for one of these.
Problem when used for back pain is that one usually needs assistance in placing the reusable adhesive pads in the proper place on you back, and the adhesive eventually wears out after 5-10 uses, so new pads are required. Replacement pads/electrodes are expensive.
Many Western chiropractors and physical therapy shops have a commercial grade TENS type units that they will incorporate into a treatment visit.
After you f*ck your back up there are many treatments, but very few cures. Take care of your back.

Sciatica, is no fun. I had a real dose of it once and it was very painful, especially if you are active and spend a good portion of time having to sit.
Understanding the etiololgy, that sciatica is actually the inflammation of the connective tissue around around the sciatic nerve helps explain the best treatment.
When I was hit with it I treated it with maximum doses of aspirin and rest. Still persisted for about two months before it resolved but thankfully it eventually did, and never returned

This is not really on the topic, but could you reccomend some other travel blogs of world travelers you may know. I like reading travel blogs, but I find that many quit after a year (actually they only really plan for a year). I seem to keep finding blogs after their travels are over, which isnt as much fun reading. As far as the topic goes I have to admit that I like to travel, but after a few weeks of being away from the USA I feel a pull to come back. What is interesting to me is when I travel within the USA, I dont feel the longing to come home. I think it may be a matter of comfort, but I think it is mostly a factor of culture. If you are an American, your going to seek out American things. I see it in your blog posts, you seem to like to see a little bit of different things, but I notice you hang out a lot in American looking diners and talk to a lot of expats, not a bad thing, but I think it is just your culture showing.

I will grant you that every religion I can think of has distinct features to their archecture, but I dont think they are all noisy. I am LDS (Latter Day Saint) and I have yet to hear a peep from the temple when I walk the grounds.

Hi Hobo, I like your writing style :). However .. if you follow all the items listed in that tutorial (and generate sites like hobohideout) you're going to end up going against the Google Webmaster Guidelines. That's not really a problem, unless.. you need traffic from Google's search results.
A much better guide is the SEOmoz "Beginners Guide to SEO" (soon to be updated again). In particular you should stay far away from link exchanges and autogenerated content ;)
