Andy here are some nice pics I took the other day in Osaka, Japan with my mobile phone.

http://www.travelinasia.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5432

On my mobile phone I can put Micro SD card, now a days 2 gb.

I can make movies, convert them to AVI and then to WVA then upload them to Youtube and I will be a famouse director...

Yes I do not want to walk around with a sign on my neck, "I am a photographer."

Even, sometimes when I ask permission form my subjects to take their photo, it is better to do it with a mobile phone.

Just a site of a camera scares people to be stiff or to hide!

Okay, there is software out there that converts 3GP to WMV but I only get 15 seconds after converting, even though I unlocked the software. The fixed to it that I found is first open the 3GP file in QuickTime pro and export it in MPEG-4 format, then open the MPEG-$ in 3GP to WMV converter and encode the file with output set to WMV.

MPEG-4 quality is not so good, will try to export as AVI, QT does not export as WMV...

I tried a few software converters 3GP to WMV like ImToo and others and they all have 15 second limit even if the 3GP file is longer.

It might be a new 3GP format.

If you find the same problem try my method.

If anyone knows of a good software to convert 3GP to WMV please let me know!

My mobile phone is Casio W51CA 4 mega pixels.

The 3GP resolution is fantastic, if I can keep the quality after conversion I can become Steven Spielberg...

Andy I am glad you having a good time at K.S. House guest house, and Wi-Fi connection is good.

You should talk to Charlie about renting a room by the month which will be much cheaper for you and help you save some money to spend in Africa.

I am doing something new now, that you may find interesting.

I am taking videos with my mobile phone and uploading them to my Travel in Asia Forum

Here is a video of Steve from Emisteve, he and his wife Emi who is Japanese have been bicycling the world for 20 years. Their survival story is very interesting.

http://www.travelinasia.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5370

And here is a vedio of a convinience store in Japan, so people coming to Japan for the first time will know what to expect.

http://www.travelinasia.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5402

After you take the video with your mobile phone upload it to your laptop and convert it from 3GP to WMV format.

It loses some qulity in conversion but you get the point accross. It might be fun for you to do, because peopel do not expect to be videod with a mobile phone, and you can get some nice interviews.

Try it out on Kha San Road. Walk around with your mobile phone and get some candid interviews from the locals...

Igor Berger commented about Aging Khao San Road, On Thursday October 11th, 2007 06:38:00 AM

Andy do want worry about Khao San Road!

We the original travelers have built it...if the developers want it we will make a new Khao San Road....

You know this is how it works. We have to find our sanctuary and make it happen then everyone want to come there.

Remeber Antigua, Lake Atitlan, San Pedro, Anjuna beach, Pushcart...and many more.

They were the real hippie communities that TW from LP wrote about, but now they are turist traps, so as LP. :)

So we put on our worn down sneakers and search for our new haven...

I heard Tulum is a 5 star resort.
When I went there in 1991 I slept in a hammock that I bought some place in Merida and made love to my girlfriend in the ocean while listing to Bob Marley no woman no cry from the only bar restaurant that was the only building on the beaches...while looking at the Maya pyramids...

So believe you and me life as a traveler got to be a real chalange.
I just come back from China and while there I went to Huang San mountain and had group tour turist with their leader and mega phone stair and point fingers at me.

I felt like Planet of the Apes :)

It is right on our Charlie Connection Travel & Tour and K.S. House Website towards the buttom of the page.
www.travelconnecxion.com

But I sent you an email to the editor so you can email to me...

Andy, I am sure you are IT savy, one has to be to compete in 21 st century.

Another tip in configuring wi-Fi is to set your computer to obtain an IP address automatically not assign in statically in your TCP/IP settings.

The router does that work and unless you know the DNS IP address setting it to static even if on the same range and subnet mask will not work.

Well the staff at K.S. House do have some understanding of network configuration and they have support from Thai IT people who will try to help as much as possible.

So all you guys staying at K.S House please get in touch with me if you have a hard time connecting to the Wi-Fi network I will trouble shoot the problem for you.

Igor

Igor Berger commented about Short Flights Cheaper Long Flights More Expensive, On Thursday October 11th, 2007 04:03:00 AM

Andy it is not quite true.

I just flew from Bangkok to Osaka and the cost by Singapore Airlines is around 22,000 use to be 16,000
I choosed Vietnam Airlines for 13,000 Baht with a long stop over in Ho Chi Minh City, but got to save a lot of money.

The airlines pile up fuel charges no matter where you fly, but they have also raised the Net Fare.

So the fuel charges have not changed much in the past few years, but the Net Fares have climbed astronomically.

And actually the short hall flights have increased more than long ones....

Igor Berger commented about Khao San Road WIFI, On Thursday October 11th, 2007 03:47:00 AM

Andy I do not know why it took you one hour to connect to our Wi-Fi.
All you need is our network name and the WEP key.

Click on the the little monitor on your Windows toolbar and you can see available networs.

The little monitor that looks like a computer is in the right side of your toolbar, and it is the Wi-Fi network symbol.
Once the Wirelsss network connection status software comes up click on the desired network and enter the WEP key and you are done...

I just installed a Wi-Fi system in Japan and I really had a hurd time getting it going.
With K.S. House Wi-Fi it is Lynksis and the WEP key is generated and given to you when you connect the access pointfor the first time, but in Japan I am using Buffalo and the WEP key is generated by the software but not given to you, so you need to use the Windows Wireless Network Setup Wisard where you put the password there and it generates the WEP key for you.

Maybe Windows VIsta works like that with Linksys also, so you need the password and it generates the WEP key automatically for you.

I have not tested with Vista.
Or if you are using the wireless card proprietary software it might be the case also.

So whenever the Wep key does not work for connection, get the password that generated the WEP key and try that using Windows WNSW to generate the WEP key, or if it is disabled because you are using the Wi-Fi card proprietary software, put the password in the software if the correct WEP key does not connect you.

If anyone needs some IT tips please come to my forum and I will try to help you out.

Igor Berger commented about Khao San Road WIFI, On Thursday October 11th, 2007 03:12:00 AM

Andy, I am glad you are staying at K.S. House.

We have an Wi-Fi access point on the first floor and on the second floor. And Charlie told me he go another access point for the 5th floor restaurant.

The 3rd and 4th floor the rooms by the stairs can get a signal.

The reason we put a WEP key is so no one rubs our signal.

Once you get the WEP key you can login with the network name and the key.

Sorry about the hot water thermostats we are fixing everything at K.S. house that has a problem.

It is in much better condition than a few months ago.

What has happened is that we got this guest house 2 years ago and put a partner manager in charge of it, but he let it gow down the hill.

So Charlie and I took over the management because the partner gave up and left.

The past few months we been fixing many things.

If something does not work or you see some problem please let me know.

You can get my email address from our Website.

Thank you.

Oh and about the kitchen if you going to stay with us for a while talk to Charlie and I am sure you guys can work something out.
You can even rent the room by the month and get a great discount.

Igor Berger commented about WIFI Sniffing Around in Bangkok, On Wednesday October 10th, 2007 08:31:00 AM

Andy, I agree with you putting one one repeater does not do the job.

We have three access points at K.S. House. One on the first floor which is the lobby, one on the second floor which is a common area, and one on the 5th floor which is our restaurant.

Being that we have 5 floors and 3 of them have an access point we get excelet coverage.

I walked around all the floors and sniffed for the network from many rooms. The floor that has an access point garuanties connectivity in every room on that floor. The 3rd and 4th floor rooms are well covered but there might be some weak spots there because we do not have an AP on them.
Also the ability to have a strong conection on these floors depends if you have a built in Wi-Fi card or external card.
With external card you get a better signal.

But no matter, if our guest will have a problem connecting in some room we will move them to a room with a better signal.
And if we will see a high demand for Wi-Fi from many of our guests we will add access points to 3rd and 4th floor.

So my advise when a guest is making a reservation with us to say that they need Wi-Fi and we will place them in an appropriate room so they will have a great signal.

As you know we care about our customers and will work hard to make their stay with us as plesant and convient as possible. We been around KSR for around 15 years now, working out of our travel agency Charlie Connection Travel & Tour providing air tickets and other travel products to travelers, expats, and turists.

We started the guest house a few years ago and the manager at that time our partner did not put his heart into the job and let it slip.

Charlie and his wife Mattana took over the daily management duties from the old partner manager who decided he had enough and left us.

You can see Charlie and Mattana at the guest house every day.

When you come over please say hello to Charlie and get to know him. He is an institution on KSR.

Maybe you can give him some tips and suggestions about running a friendly and interesting guest house for travelers!

I am in Japan now, so you guys do it without me...

Oh, the Wi-Fi Internet is free for guests and visitors.
If you just want to come in and use it to surf the Net, please do, just buy a cup of coffee or a beer and you are set. We have plenty of places to hang out at the common area!
