Well you sure aren't going to find a "non bar girl" hanging around bars, now are you Andy?
I know many guys from around the world who has found true love in the Philippines. Your "percentages" area gross exaggeration.
Living like you do Andy, just off the bottom in cheap lodging, pinching your pennies, pesos, birr and cedi, posting insulting essays to get your clicks up, I can see why you never meet interesting, well to do people, You don't see them except from afar, and those who do have the misfortune to actually interact with you are probably turned off by your negativity.
Where to find "non bargirl" wife prospects in the Philippines? Shop girls, they have a job and are working to support their extended families. Medical centers, nurses, med students, medical technologists. Business district, secretaries, business owners, entrepreneurs. And let's not forget the Church.
But you have to put in the time and energy to develop a relationship. Hit and run won't work with a good Filipina girl. And hit and run is all you have time for Andy.
Time to load up the packs and head on out to your next "adventure". I doubt the Philippines will even know you're gone.

I agree with Chuck. Plenty guys meet their women in bars right here in the good ole USA. It's probably the same all around the world.
You do not say it, but your article seems to have give a negative connotation to a "bargirl". What man wouldn't want that girl in the top picture to love him? Just because she has been driven to taking a job as a GRO because of the poor country, economics and trying to support her family , doesn't make her a bad.
That's the thing about your writing that is so exhausting. You hint and tiptoe around BUT YOU DO NOT SAY IT. Are you intentionally vague? Attempting to be artistic? Or do you want to give yourself an out? If you are called out you can flip flop?

As I understand they awarded it to President Obama because of his weather change in dealing with other nations. No longer does the US have the "with us or against us", lie to get us into a war, cowboy mentality, President Obama practices DIPLOMACY.
Unfortunately, what "we" think has nothing to do with who gets the prize. Why can't we just enjoy the fact that a sitting President of the United States has won the Nobel PP? This second guessing is not productive.
And by what stretch of the imagination does winning the Nobel Peace prize become a negative?

Ash on "Seven Years in Tibet". A movie was made of that book. (two in fact. ) The second starred Brad Pitt. Though Harrer complained about Tibet his companion, Peter Aufschnaiter must have enjoyed his time there,
From Wikipedia:
"During his time in Tibet, Aufschnaiter played an important role as a geographer and cartographer for the Tibetan government and volunteered to map out numerous places throughout Tibet which had never been accurately drawn up. Aufschnaiter helped the Tibetan city of Lhasa plan a hydroelectric power plant and a system of canals. His extensive work is well documented in a book by Heinrich Harrer, Seven Years in Tibet. His own book Peter Aufschnaiter's: Eight Years in Tibet includes many of his own photographs and sketches.
After leaving Tibet, he arrived in Nepal in 1952 where he worked as a cartographer and then in New Delhi for the Indian Army. He eventually obtained a Nepalese passport which allowed him access to many restricted remote areas and he discovered valuable early Buddhist frescos. Aufschnaiter spent most of his remaining years in Nepal, working as an agricultural engineer. At first he worked for Swiss Technical Aid[2]. From 1956 on he held a position as an agriculture expert for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Every three years he went on leave to Europe, where he and Heinrich Harrer went mountaineering together."
Which is more productive? Carping and complaining about a country, or getting to work to help further change?
I prefer the latter.

Just ask the locals who owns those homes. They will know. Odds are a congressman, or businessman.
Construction costs are much less in the Philippines than western countries. Consequently, a big house like that costs much less than comparables in the US.
There are certain "ruling families" that have accumulated wealth over the years, stretching back to the Spanish occupation. What is in the Families, stays in the Families, "old world" style. Used to be there were the rich and the masses. A middle class has started but many of their families still live in nipa huts back in the provinces.
I doubt you will be able to connect with type "A" Filipinos. Your lifestyle is not conducive to meeting and interacting with their circle. (They don't stay in 500P a night Pension houses, ride jeepneys, or eat at Carinderias.)

Where do I get the Balikbayan box?
Check with the local Filipino/Oriental markets. Most are representatives for a Forwarder.
Is this cheaper or just a marketing scheme?
Certainly cheaper that regular shipping and the "no weight limit" is an attraction.
Is this just same as normal container shipping or special?
The company combines boxes at their west coast warehouse and ships a container to Manila. Each company has their own approved size boxes.
Can I get hard to ship items in the country easier, for example items that would normally be stopped by customs?
Yes. Balikbayan boxes are not normally checked by customs.
(This refers to those boxes shipped by a company, NOT boxes carried by an airline passenger.
How long does it take, weeks, months?
Varies, 30 days to 2 months.
Is it truly safe?
As safe as anything in this world. There has been no pilferage on boxes we have shipped the past several years. We use Forex.
Give me a list of shipping companies that specialize in these Balikbayan boxes.

Thx 4 ur comments Andy always good to hear from you. Your PD and mine differ. I would rather immerse myself with locals (nothing about tourist destinations there) than hang out with white, fat, bombastic expats and mongers whose only reason to be in country is to avail themselves of the cheap living, drink, food and young girls. You often find them in the bars, discos and VFW's complaining about all four. Those guys are vexations to the spirit. Why they stay when they seem so miserable is amazing.
No excuses, just fact:
The Philippines is a poor 3rd world country. They have corrupt politicians whose families have been in power for generations. The country had been raped and pillaged by the Spanish, the Japanese, America, and the Oligarchy for centuries. Yet the people persevere. They still smile and have a "Good Morning Sir" ready when they greet you. Why there has been no mass revolt is surprising.
Why have all the countries of the Pacific Rim prospered, yet the gross national product of the Philippines fallen? Why was there a directive after WWII stating that the Philippines were to be used as an agricultural and "resource nation" and the other nations built up as manufacturing countries? The Philippines was an ally of America, yet America rebuilt Japan's factories, and relegated the Philippines to third world status.
I don't see the Philippines through rose colored glasses Andy, I know the place is a pit, corruption, overpopulation, pollution, filth, the scams, but the hope is in the people. They are waking up. More are getting an education and though many still leave the country for greener pastures, some stay and others return to try and make a difference. They open businesses, food programs, orphanages, run for office and try to better the country.

The Mark and Olly show just started here in the US. Last week was an intro to their upcoming adventures, just highlights.
If it is anything like the other "Living with" programs there will be as much drama as they can manufacture.
You wouldn't want them to spill the beans so soon and ruin the show would you?
BTW, you need to do a google on Verlen Kruger and the "Two Continent Expedition". Kruger and his wife paddled canoes up the Rio Negro and down the Amazon on a self supported expedition that started on the Bering Sea and ended by rounding Cape Horn.

Andy,
Of course religion affects morality, but so does money. The prevalence of guns in both the Philippines and Guatemala has more to do with the poor economy of the countries than how they worshop.
BTW, right wingers are flocking to gun shops and shows here in the US to stock up before Obama starts banning automatic weapons. Are they all catholic?
That's what every sportsman hunter needs, a couple of AK47's.

But you were there during the "Mission Accomplished" stage. When the country was high on America, before the "occupation".

A mass grave by Saddam? Yes,I guess he should have been "taken out".
But at what cost Andy?
Current documented civilian Iraqi deaths in this war is 96,000.
Estimates are well over a million Iraqi civilians dead because of our "intervention". to take Saddam out.
They may not be in a mass grave, but they are dead none the less.
There were no WMD's, we were lied to. We are sticking around trying to clean up the mess WE created.

am opposed to your stance on War, but I respect your right to express it. I will continue to read your blog.
Now, just because thousands of young, impressionable men and women are brainwashed to believe their country right or wrong, or that GW Bush is a good world leader doesn't make the wars they fight right.
History will judge. And history has judged the Vietnam War (which they call the American War in Vietnam) to have been a waste of men and material.
The Domino effect was a ruse, sold by the War Mongers to the American Public. War is about economics, and now millions have been squandered on Iraq. Whatever McCain or Obama says this "war" has contributed to the current economic situation.
I will never criticize the soldiers, but the wars they fight is fair game.
"Politicians rise above"? Surely you jest. In the latest Indiana debate Jill Long (D candidate for Gov) was tearing into Mitch (current R Gov) all night long. After one especially tough response he looked at Jill and said,"I've been hoping to see a kinder, gentler you all evening, but I guess it's not gonna happen".
Just answer the question Mitch...
And I agree, once Obama is elected President he will have to shoulder the weight of the current administrations folly. I hope and pray he will be up to the job.

Face it, not everyone can or wants to live a vagabond life. Sure it sounds inviting, for a while. But traveling around the world for 10+ years may be too much for most people.
Some would shrivel up and die without their jobs. It's how they define themselves.
As to spending money I'm sure you are familiar with the "Guns and Butter" theory. Well Americans have been sucking up to the butter pot, borrowing money to do it.
Time for a correction was long overdue.

I come from a backpacking/hiker and canoe tripping background. My gear shelf has several backpacks of various designs and dimensions. The needs of a lightweight backpacker is different from a canoe tripper and also different from a Traveler.
I like the bucket pack liner idea. It is always good for a piece of "gear" to do double duty.
I have been using alcohol for boiling water several years on my expeditions and have experimented with cat stoves, pepsi can stoves, fruit juice cans, zen stoves etc.
Some people get anal about testing their stove for the amount of alky it takes to boil 1 cup of water. A Traveler doesn't have to worry about the minutia of Alcohol stove cooking.
I have also found alcohol stoves work best when it is warm. It takes much more fuel to boil water in a cool or cold climate.

Of course you are homeless, your home is your backpack and the room you are currently renting.
But Family is very important to a Filipino. They equate home with where the family is located. They probably just want to know where you are from. You are being too specific when you say you're "homeless".

There were 7-10 women and their children working and living there IN THE GARAGE. They cooked all their meals on a small 2 gaz burner (like a camping stove)and were not allowed in the regular part of the house. Different country, different working conditions. Still everyone out there seemed happy to have a job.

On our trip to the PH and Vietnam last winter I was continuously surprised by the size of luggage people were allowed to carry on. There seemed to be no size limit from large oversize backpacks to rolling duffels. There didn't seem to be any enforcement.
In contrast, I was busted in LA by Cathay because my small carry on luggage was over weight by their standards (15 lbs). The counter help would have caused a stir until I showed them it was over 50% medicines for my transplant.

It has been said that "Filipino women are the strongest men in Asia". There is much to this.
I see the problems in the Philippines relating to it's being dominated, raped and used by western society for hundreds of years. First the Spanish, and then the Americans. "Four hundred years in a Spanish convent, fifty years in Hollywood". The people are always looking for a big brother to save them. And they have always been taken for a ride.
At one time after WWII the Philippines had as good a chance for growth as any of the current Pacific Rim Tigers. But first America, then the oligarchs and powerful families (most reaching back to Spanish rule) took more than their share. By the time Marcos left, the country was broke and in ruin. And he had the backing of the US!
I don't know if your travels allow time for reading but two I could recommend are The Marcos Dynasty by Seagrave and Gold Warriors: America's Secret Recovery of Yamashita's Gold also by Seagrave.
Desperate people do desperate things, even run scams...

I agree with you. Travel in the Philippines is frustrating to say the least. I have met Filipinos there who have traveled the world, but not their own country.
You need a local guide, not expats. It is possible to rent a car and driver very inexpensively. Get someone with a 4wd and sense of adventure. Head up to Baguio, Make him take the Mountain Rd. Go to Batad and see the Rice Terraces, visit Sagada and the Burial Caves in Bontoc Province, head to Vigan to see the old Spanish Architecture. head further north to visit Pugudpud, the remote seaside resort town.
There is much to see in the Philippines, but without a guide it's hard to find it.

There is a big expat (US, Aus, Brit, German) community in the Philippines and in Cebu in particular. Not all these "older" men are simply looking for a good time girl. Many of them marry a Filipina and start a family there. The man is looking for someone to love and give comfort in his declining years. The girl wants the security that comes from marrying a foreigner. Maybe an escape from the poverty and a US citizenship.
Sometimes it works out, sometimes the girl finds a younger lover and abandons the man. That's life.
BTW, I sent an e-mail with a small list of "things to do in Cebu". Don't forget to visit Magellans Cross. (Of course like George Washington axe the wood has been replaced over the years...)
